FUTURE PROJECT LEADERS

It’s never too early to start thinking about leading a project for next year. As you walk around the fair, you might even think to yourself, “Wow, I could teach that!” Project ideas that come to mind would be electricity, making robots out of common everyday things, fly tying, taxidermy, putting together models, experimenting with Lego building blocks, raising bees, sport fishing, aerospace, environmental education, and of course, there are always the traditional projects that we offer: Cooking, Baking, Canning, Sewing, Arts and Crafts, Jewelry Making, Mini Gardens, and the many animal projects. Please call the 4-H Office is there is something you could help us out in teaching the next 4-H year. We can find curriculum for you and you can always come to the office and look through our Curriculum Library!

The mission of California 4-H states this: The University of California 4-H Youth Development Program engages youth in reaching their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development.

An ambitious and insightful guide for our work, but one well within our reach. To meet it, however, we must ensure that we’re putting emphasis on both practice and research, as each drives the other to make the most effective programming possible.

As such, you may have seen a recent increase in the surveys and evaluations that have been sent out – with more to come! Though they can be time consuming, the infor-mation is vital to direct the 4-H Youth Development program.

For instance, the SPARK surveys found in the Online Record Book are vital to discover-ing the impacts and outcomes of 4-H. The aggregate information collected is used to determine our greatest strengths, placed into marketing handouts, and (perhaps most importantly) presented to local, state, and federal governments to secure continued funding and support for 4-H. Below are a few examples of what these surveys have helped us discover. We encourage all youth to complete these assessments by logging into ORB here and looking for the box that says “Boost Your Spark Score!”

Additionally, we’re striving to have evaluation opportunities at every 4-H event to better understand what works, and what can be improved. We love to hear your feedback! Organizing committees use this information to rethink and restructure our programming where needed year after year. It helps us create the best pro-grams possible!

You should also have seen a volunteer survey in your inbox recently. This is part of a statewide effort to better understand the needs of our adult leaders. We’ve had an amazing response so far - but if you haven’t taken this survey already, please take a few minutes to do so. (If you can’t find the link another one will be sent to you soon – or you can contact me for more information.) The anonymous data will be used to look at trends throughout California and create resources and trainings that you need for your projects and programs. I will also be able to pull out information for our counties (though no names or personal info will be attached) to see the specific needs here in Colusa, and create resources just for us. Plus, completing this survey enters you to win prizes!

If you have any questions about these surveys and evaluations, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you for your constant willingness to “Make the Best Better!” You are what makes 4-H great!
