COLUMBIA STARTS IN 2016 NOTES & LINKS

On January 27, 2016, the New York Mets announced Jose Leger as the first manager of the Columbia Fireflies.

This will be Leger’s seventh season in the Mets organization and second managing New York’s single-A affiliate. Last year the 2015 South Atlantic League Manager of the Year led the Savannah Sand Gnats to their second-highest win total in team history and a playoff birth. The Sand Gnats topped the Southern Division in each half of the 2015 season — finishing with a record of 84-53. Leger piloted the team to one of the best stretches of baseball in South Atlantic League history. In August, Savannah won 18 straight games — the longest streak in the majors or minors in 10 years — and finished the month with a 25-2-1 record. Ironically, it was a rain-shortened tie on August 23rd that snapped the win streak. Because of his success, the Mets added Leger to their Major League coaching staff in September of 2015. Prior to last season, the 34-year-old from Santo Domingo,

Dominican Republic, served three years as manager of the Mets’ advanced-rookie affiliate — the Kingsport Mets — in the Appalachian League. In 2013, he led Kingsport to a division title. In 2010 and 2011, Leger managed one of the Mets’ two Dominican Summer League clubs. Leger played professionally in the Minnesota Twins organization from 2004-2008 as a catcher and infielder. He also had a standout collegiate career in the Peach State. Leger started at Middle Georgia College (Cochran, GA) and helped lead the team to back-to-back Junior College World Series in 2001 and 2002. The infielder then played his final two seasons at Georgia College & State University (Milledgeville, GA) and was an All-Peach Belt Conference selection in 2003 and 2004. This past winter, Leger was the bench coach for St. Lucie Mets (Advanced-A) manager Luis Rojas’ Leones del Escogido that won the Dominican Winter League championship. Leger also served as the hitting coach for the Dominican Summer League Twins in 2009.

Morales and his wife, Estela, have two sons: Jose Joaquin and Eduardo Jose. They live in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, during the winter.

Last year was Leger’s first season managing the Savannah Sand Gnats, the previous Mets single-A affiliate. He was named the 2015 South Atlantic League Manager of the Year after piloting the Sand Gnats to an 84-53 record and a playoff birth. For his success in 2015, the Mets promoted Leger to help coach the Major League club in September as the Amazins’ prepared to make their World Series run. Leger was signed as an infielder and catcher by the Twins in 2004 after a stellar collegiate career. He led Middle Georgia College to back-to-back JUCO World Series, and later was a two-time All Peach Belt Conference selection at Georgia State and College University . He played four seasons of affiliated Minor League Baseball from 2004-2008. Leger’s coaching career started in 2009 when he was the hitting coach for the Dominican Summer League Twins. At the age of just 26, Leger was named the manager of one of the Mets Dominican Summer League clubs, where he spent two seasons. He then managed the Kingsport Mets for three years before heading to Savannah for the 2015 season. Jonathan Hurst (Pitching Coach), a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, begins his first season with the Fireflies and his 11th overall in the Mets organiza tion. Hurst spent the past six seasons (2010-2015) as the pitching coach of the Kingsport Mets, New York’s advanced-rookie affiliate in the Appalachian League. The former big leaguer previously coached in the South Atlantic League in 2007 and 2008 with the former Mets affiliate, the Savannah Sand Gnats. Hurst appeared in seven games for the Mets in 1994 and made his Major League debut with the Montreal Expos in 1992. After a standout career at Spartanburg Methodist, Hurst signed with the Texas Rangers after being selected in the fourth round of the 1987 draft. Joel Fuentes (Hitting Coach) begins his 10th year in the Mets organization and his first in Columbia. He spent two seasons (2012-2013) previously in the South Atlantic League, coaching the former Mets affiliate, the Savannah Sand Gnats. He spent last year and the 2010 and 2011 seasons as hitting coach of the Mets advanced-A club, the St. Lucie Mets, in the Florida State League. The native of Puerto Rico played collegiately at Southeastern Illinois College and was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 24th round of the 1997 draft. Fuentes played from 1997 to 2003.
