Columbia County Association for Home and Community Education January 2017 President’s Message Changing With Today Hello to all of my friends, Well, how many of you invited your neighbors to your last meeting? The Durward’s Glen Club had guests invited to the last meetings and that resulted in two new members. I hope I hear more success stories soon. That would be great. REMEMBERING THE PAST: When I was a young girl I remember my school- mates talking about watching certain television pro- grams. I felt left out and did not admit to my friends that we did not have a television. After my grandmother passed away, we inherited her television. The television sat out on the cold porch for awhile and nobody dared to watch it, for fear of the cold. My oldest brother had heard all of his friends talking about a big football game to be televised, and he came up with a plan. He pushed the television as close to the kitchen window as possible and turned up the volume. There we sat in the warm kitchen viewing the game through the window. I believe it was a super bowl game. The names of Bart Starr and Boyd Dowler came up and the announcer talked of the cold temperatures. After the porch, the television was moved to the basement, sitting in the furnace room. Warm place at last. We would have to arrange chunks of wood from the woodpile to make something to sit on. This is where we first saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was not too long before I could name all the shows on the three channels. Dad was disgusted with the amount of viewing time we were getting. The barn chore routine was suffering. Dad’s solution was to hide the television electric cord. Well, we soon learned the sewing machine cord worked on the tele- vision. Dad’s next solution was to put a lock of some sort on the television. My older brother used a hairpin on the lock. Dad’s third solution, after the picture tube went bad—don’t buy another television. We were without a television for awhile. Dad de- cided he liked to watch sometimes, and bought an- other. We became better with our chores. 2016 IN REVIEW What did we do? Because of a donation from a local person, 4-H clubs and HCE clubs were able to make use of fabric, quilting books and patterns. Some members made coverlets for women in Nicaragua. In our leader training meetings we made our guts healthy, learned about healthy eyes, and how to drive roundabouts. We found out the ADRC (Aging and Disability Resource Center) is a great place to go if we are wondering how to grow old. The discus- sion on homeschooling was quite informative. I learned from the discussion. We dressed up in period hats and dresses to put us in the mood for a very interesting talk on costumes though the ages. We found out the history of the Hmong people that compelled them to migrate to the U.S. The Hmong people have made many contributions to this county. Once again the cream puff sales were a big success. I enjoy working at the cream puff booth. You meet many interesting people. Students in the area benefited by having the Book- worm readers come to their school. Four students were given scholarships. Youth Encouragement Awards were present to 4-H students at the county fair. And for last, Columbia County HCE was presented an Achievement Award for increasing membership. Changing With Today

Hello to all of my friends

Well how many of you invited your neighbors to

your last meeting The Durwardrsquos Glen Club had

guests invited to the last meetings and that resulted

in two new members I hope I hear more success

stories soon That would be great

REMEMBERING THE PAST

When I was a young girl I remember my school-

mates talking about watching certain television pro-

grams I felt left out and did not admit to my friends

that we did not have a television

After my grandmother passed

away we inherited her television

The television sat out on the cold

porch for awhile and nobody

dared to watch it for fear of the cold My oldest

brother had heard all of his friends talking about a

big football game to be televised and he came up

with a plan He pushed the television as close to the

kitchen window as possible and turned up the

volume There we sat in the warm kitchen viewing

the game through the window I believe it was a

super bowl game The names of Bart Starr and Boyd

Dowler came up and the announcer talked of the

cold temperatures

After the porch the television

was moved to the basement

sitting in the furnace room

Warm place at last We

would have to arrange chunks

of wood from the woodpile to

make something to sit on This is where we first saw

The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show

It was not too long before I could name all the shows

on the three channels Dad was disgusted with the

amount of viewing time we were getting The barn

chore routine was suffering Dadrsquos solution was to

hide the television electric cord Well we soon

learned the sewing machine cord worked on the tele-

vision Dadrsquos next solution was to put a lock of

some sort on the television My older brother used a

hairpin on the lock Dadrsquos third solution after the

picture tube went badmdashdonrsquot buy another television

We were without a television for awhile Dad de-

cided he liked to watch sometimes and bought an-

other We became better with our chores

2016 IN REVIEW

What did we do

Because of a donation from a local person 4-H clubs

and HCE clubs were able to make use of fabric

quilting books and patterns Some members made

coverlets for women in Nicaragua

In our leader training meetings we made our guts

healthy learned about healthy eyes and how to

drive roundabouts We found out the ADRC (Aging

and Disability Resource Center) is a great place to go

if we are wondering how to grow old The discus-

sion on homeschooling was quite informative I

learned from the discussion

We dressed up in period hats and dresses to put us in

the mood for a very interesting talk on costumes

though the ages

We found out the history of the Hmong people that

compelled them to migrate to the US The Hmong

people have made many contributions to this county

Once again the cream puff sales were a big success

I enjoy working at the cream puff booth You meet

many interesting people

Students in the area benefited by having the Book-

worm readers come to their school Four students

were given scholarships Youth Encouragement

Awards were present to 4-H students at the county

fair

And for last Columbia County HCE was presented

an Achievement Award for increasing membership

I know I probably missed some events I think I
