MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic

experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to join with local arts

organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings.

OVERVIEWColumbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery

exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art

birthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement

lectures and more! Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s

Community Services Division. Under Columbia Association, Columbia

Art Center is 26 years old. It has been a functioning arts school for more than

30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College.

LOCATION Columbia Art Center is located in the Long Reach Village Center(next to Stonehouse Community Center) just minutes from Route 175 and TamarDrive.

DIRECTIONS From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 forseveral miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile.Turn right on Cloudleap Court. Turn left into Long Reach Village Center parkinglot. Art Center is located in the courtyard past the fountain (look for large roundwindow). From I-95, take the MD 100 West exit (43B) towards Ellicott City. Takethe Snowden River exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the second exit ontoSnowden River Parkway. Turn right on Tamar Drive and drive .5 miles. Turn left at Cloudleap Court. Park in the Long Reach Village Center loton left. Columbia Art Center is located in courtyard beyond the fountain (look forlarge round window).

School’s Out ProgramWhen Howard County public schools are out, come to Columbia Art

Center for an amazing day of creative fun. Go home with cool art

projects. Bring a friend, make new friends, bring a lunch, and

enjoy enjoy a fun day of art! (Children will be served a snack and beverage

after 3:30pm.) Registration can be taken until the day before the

School’s Out date. Discounts given for advance or multiple

registrations.

School’s Out Fall 2013 program dates are:

School’s Out Youth Visiting Artist Series For ages 11-13Columbia Art Center is pleased to invite students ages 11-13 to

participate in its Visiting Artist Series. The series is designed to

encourage young artists to improve their technical skills while acquiring

a sense of personal expression. The program provides an opportunity

for students to connect with community artists and to cultivate a

passion for the arts. Each guest instructor will discuss their personal

art and creative process while teaching a unique and challenging

workshop.

RENTALSColumbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries,studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with originalart for your next event. Art displays change regularly. Our rooms accommodate bridal and baby

showers, corporate meetings, art and craft group meetings, lectures, art project rentals, birthday

parties and celebrations of all sorts, even small weddings. Columbia Art Center provides tables

and chairs. Room setup and take down are responsibility of renter. Please allow set-up and take-

down time in your rental timeframe. For an additional fee, Columbia Art Center can set up

room. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center. Please call Columbia Art Center at 410-

730-0075 or email [email protected] for more information or to reserve your rental.

GIVE IT A SPIN with Joe VitekFor ages 18 and upHave you always wanted to try your hand at making something on thepotter’s wheel? Well join us and see what it’s all about. RyanGreenheckThis ceramics workshop will explore anarray of options to enhance your pots/vessels with decoration. Initial explorations in the greenware stage will include use of slip, slip trailing, sprigging, as well as trimming. In theglaze portion of the workshop, glazestrategies, glaze trailing, and waxing techniques will be investigated. Upon the completion of this workshop, you will be equipped with a variety of skills to use on your pots/vessels in the future.

COLLAGEPAPER COLLAGE: CUVISM (Cognitive Unconscious Visuality) with George Sakkal George believes that art is the visual creative manifestationof human experience. He will introduce you to amethodology that will help access the wealth of yourlife’s experience stored in the memories of your unconscious mind to create art intuitively. Using CUVISM, a unique methodology involving automaticfunctions of the retina of the eye and your cognitive unconscience mind, you will be guided by George’s 51 years of collage experience to search, discover andcreate art composition. ITALIAN DECOUPAGE with Susan KiefferHow would you like to turn that drab old piece of furniture into something spectacular? Well, with “Italiandecoupage” it’s truly possible! Italian decoupage is notthe old art of cutting something out of a magazine andgluing it down to a surface. This method starts withpaper napkins and turns into something really special.The finished surface of your project will resemble a handpainted design. This technique can be done on anysmooth wooden surface. MOKUME GANE POLYMER CLAYwith Donna WeeksPolymer clay is such a terrific medium that it can beadapted to any technique. Mokume gane is based on an ancient Japanese technique of layering metals to produce a very unique look. Polymer clay allows us toadopt this ancient technique and make it totally modernand practical. Have fun working with several layers ofclay, gold or copper leafing, stamps, and more to createunique works of art. Once you have stamped, skeweredand worked your clay, you’ll then have layers which youwill press onto another piece of the backing. Teacher BiographiesRobin Abello is a technology consultant, software engineer, andteacher. He is the founder of Personal Computerworks, Inc.and ezColumbia, a local classifieds service and community information website. Trudy Babchak, Assistant Director of the Columbia Art Center,holds a BA from the University of Maryland and Post Baccalaureate degree in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Joyce Bell received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees inArt Education from Towson University. Since retiring fromteaching art in Baltimore County elementary and middle schools.Bob Coe is the principal designer for Arbitron, Inc. An artistmember of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, Bob studied watercolor with Morris Green and has been teaching at Columbia Art Center since 1991. Susan Wertheimer David, a potter for over 20 years, originallytrained as an art historian at the Institute of Fine Arts in New York. She has studied with potters such as Ron Meyers,Nicholas Joerling, Ellen Shankin and Woody HughesDavid Fried holds an MFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art and has studied portraiture and sculpture at theSchuler School and Mitchell School of Art. Kathy Fritz received her BA in Fine Arts from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. After being a drafter for many years, shestarted beading. Kathy’s love for beading inspired her tolaunch Bead Soup, an online jewelry store. Dennis Gilbert has been a nature and art photographer for over35 years. He has photographed extensively and exhibited inthe Outer Banks, other Atlantic coast regions and in the Columbia/Howard County area. Cathy Holt has been working in clay for 18 years, starting inhigh school and continuing through classes at MontgomeryCollege and Baltimore Clayworks. She recently completed herBFA in Ceramics at Towson University. Marlene Jackson received her MA in Graphics Design from theUniversity of Baltimore. She has currently received a doctoraldegree at University of Phoenix. Marlene received her EdD inEducation Leadership in 2009. Marlene currently works as agraphics designer for the Federal Communications Commission.Paul Kerris has been an art teacher in the Archdioscese of DCfor 8 years and a professional artist for the last 13 years. His educational background includes an AA degree and a BA degree in the field of commercial art/illustration.Susan Kieffer has her BA degree from the University of Massa-chusetts at Amherst. She has written, illustrated and publishedtwo children’s books. Susan has taught art classes in a varietyof media for the last seven years to all ages. Donna Lansman has over 25 years of clay experience workingprofessionally as both a handbuilder and a wheel potter. Shehas taught various types of claywork to children, adults, seniorcitizens and the disabled.Deborah Maklowski has been a practicing artist for over 50

Nancy Ziegenfus McIntosh has a BS in Art Education from PennState University and an MFA in studio ceramics from ColumbiaVisual Arts College, Columbia, MD. She has taught in theMontgomery County public schools for 19 years. Jean Marie Mettee pursued a glass-exclusive career beginning in1991 after taking her first glass class at Columbia Art Center.She currently creates commission and gallery pieces in fused,stained and carved glass at her own studio.Nancy Pollack is a multi-media artist, creating jewelry in PreciousMetal Clay (PMC), metal wire, and polymer clay. Her jewelryhas been featured in several national magazines.George Sakkal has a BA in architecture from Texas A&M University and a Master’s Degree in City Planning from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. His collageshave appeared in award-winning exhibitions. Sarah Snowden has been painting of porcelain for 15 years andhas studied with many artists in the field. She teaches in herstudio and has given demonstrations at community events.Anna Tai is a retired research scientist with a great passion forknitting, crocheting and loom-knitting. To express her love ofcolors and textures, she experiments with many different colorsin the spinning and dyeing of specialty yarns. Jann Tamburello has been working with clay since the early1990’s and became affiliated with Columbia Art Center in1995. She makes wheel-thrown functional work, as well ashandbuilt pieces in stoneware and porcelain. Jones Taylor, Sr. is a professional photographer who works inhis home studio in Columbia, MD. He was instrumental in de-veloping the photography department at Columbia Art Center. Laura Vernon-Russell In her encaustic works, Laura combinesthe elements of photography, drawing and painting. Trained asa painter at MICA she has used these skills and her work inphotography to perfectly meld the two in encaustic paint. Joe Vitek started with Baltimore Clayworks in 1987, and was aresident artist until 1995. In 1964 he started working with claywhile at the Corcoran School of Art.Donna Weeks has taught herself to do many different jewelrytechniques. Several of her original designs have been publishedin national jewelry magazines including Bead Trends and BeadStyle. Carol Zika is an art educator with a MA from University of Illinois. Carol is a versatile teacher, with a range that includesdrawing, portraits, painting, printmaking, pottery, metal-smithing and jewelry design

Class Policies& ProceduresINCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due

to inclement weather, the Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth

classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes,

please call the Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075 or check Columbia Art Center’s

Facebook page.

DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed prop-

erty pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident”

tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or

non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural

Resource Committee for Action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most

classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional

information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon request.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the

right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event the Art Center must cancel a class, refund of

tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of

class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any questions about

the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before the class begins.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class

disruption and aggression towards staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive

behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves

the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for

inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption. No credits or refunds will be granted.

Registration & AdmissionAdmission is open to everyone. Advanced registration is required and early enrollment is advised to reserve a space in each class andto avoid possible cancellation. A class will be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met three days prior to the classbeginning. Several classes have pre-requisites. Please read course descriptions carefully.

In consideration for being allowed to use The Columbia Association, Inc.’s (“CA”) facilities and equip-ment, participate in any of CA’s classes and programs or avail myself of CA’s services (collectively, “CAactivities”), I agree to abide by all rules established by CA. I hereby release CA, its officers, employees,instructors, trainers, agents or representatives (the “Releasees”) from all liability to the undersigned,my representatives, heirs and assigns, for any and all claims for any loss, damage, theft of personal prop-erty, personal injury, bodily injury or death, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or oth-erwise, arising as a result of CA activities.
