Welcome to Colorado, home to four National Parks, five National Monuments, one World Heritage site, eight Historic Railroads, 26 ski resorts, 58 peaks over 14,000 feet high, and more than 300 breweries.

Hike through alpine meadows coated in wildflowers and glacier-formed lakes; experience a concert in a red-rock amphitheater; ride horseback on a ranch; raft down miles of whitewater rapids; or ski at any of our world-famous ski resorts.

Colorado's western state heritage is preserved through living-history forts, narrow-gauge railroads, mining museums, and Native American cliff dwellings. Easy access from all over the world is provided through the Gateway to the West, Denver International Airport, and easy connections to regional airports across the state.

Colorado will fulfill your dream of a fun, activity-filled holiday!

Suggestion: Stop at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, just outside of Montrose on your way to Ouray

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National ParkThere is no exaggeration in saying that the Black Canyon National Park is one of the nation’s most breathtaking scenic treasures. Carved through solid granite over countless millennia, the dark canyon walls plunge an awe-inspiring 2,700 feet to the Gunnison River below.

• Rim Rock Nature TrailAs its name implies, this self-guided nature trail takes you along a relatively flat path following the rim of the canyon. Along this sunny route you will encounter a variety of plant life from sagebrush and Gambel oak to pinyon pine and Utah juniper. This trail allows many excellent views of the Gunnison River as well as the sheer walls of the canyon.

OurayOuray has been a special destination of world travelers for more than 100 years. This small intimate community is nestled in some of the most rugged and towering peaks of the Rockies. Set at the narrow head of a valley and surrounded on three sides with 13,000 foot snowcapped peaks - Ouray is home to hundreds of miles of historic Jeep roads, sulfur-free hot springs with stunning views and the world-famous Ouray Ice Park. Remarkably, two-thirds of Ouray's original Victorian structures, are still occupied, and have been lovingly restored in order to preserve their turn-of-the-century charm.

Suggestion: Either stay in Pagosa Springs along the way to Alamosa, or after visiting Great Sand Dunes National Park overnight in Salida.

Great Sand Dunes National ParkA sandbox of epic proportions, the entire dune field encompasses 30 square miles and the tallest dune towers 750 feet high. The kid in everyone loves to sled down the sand year-round and plunge into the soft-sand tracks. Aside from the dunes, you'll find picnicking, hiking and camping opportunities, the challenging four-wheel scenic drive on Medano Pass, horseback-riding trails, the mysteriously appearing and disappearing Medano Creek, ranger-led nature walks and a couple of 14,000- and 13,000-foot peaks to climb (Crestone Needle, Crestone Peak, Cleveland Peak and Mount Herard). The park's elevation (8,200 feet) and rural location make it a favorite with dark-sky-loving stargazers, and park even offers special astronomy programs many evenings May–September.
