Whenever you purchase a car, you must register it in order to be legally able to drive it. The entire process may initially seem complicated, but it does not have to be. This guide will take you through each step in the process of registering your vehicle. You will also learn how to transfer your registration from another state and how to renew your vehicle registration even when you are out of state.

    Vehicle

    Registration

Purchasing a vehicle can be very exciting. Whether you are buying a car for the first time or have already purchased multiple vehicles in the past, making the decision to obtain a car is a big step that must be taken carefully to avoid any inconveniences.

Colorado requires vehicle insurance in order to make sure you are able to meet the financial responsibility that comes with a car accident. The state requires you to have liability insurance, which offers coverage in case you cause damage to another person or property due an accident for which you are at fault.

    Registration Insurance

    Requirements

Before you start the registration process, you should know that every car in Colorado is required to have liability insurance in order to be driven on any Colorado road or highway. This is vital since you must carry proof of insurance at all times and may be requested to show it by a police officer during a stop.

Colorado requires mandatory “med-pay” coverage in all insurance policies.

The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) established the following minimum requirements for liability insurance:

$50,000 per accident for bodily injury

$25,000 per person for bodily injury

$15,000 per accident for property damage

Bodily injury liability insurance covers injuries that you cause to another person, while property liability insurance covers up to $15,000 in damage to any cars, objects and structures that your car hits. However, these policies do not cover damage to you or your car if you are in an accident. Therefore, many drivers choose to purchase uninsured motorist, roadside assistance, comprehensive and collision coverage, as these cover the drivers and their own vehicles if they are in an accident.

    Registering Your

    Vehicle

Whether your car is new or used, here you will find all the information you need to register your vehicle. Simply gather the relevant documents and adhere to the steps outlined in the following sections.

The most important part of registering your vehicle in Colorado is understanding the requirements you will need to meet and the steps you must take depending on the type of vehicle you own.

If you purchase a new car at a dealership, you will not have to worry about registering it, as dealerships typically take care of the entire process. Be sure to confirm this with the dealership once you buy the car in order to avoid issues. However, if your dealership did not register your vehicle or if you bought a new vehicle through another method, you will have to register it on your own.

Whether your car is new or used, you have 60 days to register a vehicle after you buy it.

    Register a New Vehicle

    Visit your nearest DMV office.

Complete a Verification of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) form (DR2698) if vehicle was titled in another state.

Present the title assigned in your name.

    Present secure and verifiable ID.

Present proof of Colorado vehicle emissions, if applicable. Varies if gasoline or diesel.

Present proof of insurance: • Colorado insurance card • Copy of policy • Insurance letter on company letterhead • Email sent from insurance company. • Electronic proof of insurance.

Pay the required fees and taxes. • Fees are based on the empty weight and

    type of vehicle being registered.

Complete an Affidavit of Non-Use (DR2303) if vehicle will not be operated for a period of time.
