From the DirectorsWelcome to the opening production of Colorado

Ballet’s 52nd season! This season will showcase thetalent and abilities of our dancers and is sure to giveaudiences an inspiring experience. It speaks well ofa company that it can perform one of the greatestfull-length classical works ever, The Sleeping Beauty, and transform to the raw power of dance in ourBallet MasterWorks program in the spring.

The Sleeping Beauty is one of the grandest classi-cal ballets to ever grace the stage. Colorado Balletwill prove that true love conquers all in this produc-tion with choreography by Marius Petipa andmusic by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, performed live by theColorado Ballet Orchestra.

After The Sleeping Beauty, I encourage you to joinus for the quintessential holiday treat TheNutcracker. This tradition is a must for everyone. Our production is simply mesmerizing and alwaysputs a smile on children’s faces, both young andyoung at heart.

In the spring, we will transition from 19th centu-ry classical ballet to a production of powerful dancethat will showcase our dancers and musicians likenever before in Ballet MasterWorks. It is hard todescribe how excited I am about Ballet MasterWorks. The program will feature the 100th anniversary ofIgor Stravinsky’s score The Rite of Spring performedto Glen Tetley’s ballet Le Sacre du Printemps. The pro-gram will also include George Balanchine’s historicTheme and Variations danced to the final movementof Tchaikovsky’s Suite No. 3 for Orchestra in G major,Op. 55, and a world premiere work by choreogra-pher Val Caniparoli choreographed to the music ofPoul Ruders. I am very proud that this will be thefirst repertory program in my tenure performedwith the accompaniment of the Colorado BalletOrchestra. Ballet MasterWorks will be a performanceof dance and orchestra that is often wished for.

In March, we are honored to present Light/TheHolocaust & Humanity Project, created by StephenMills, Artistic Director for Ballet Austin. Stephen’sdevelopment of Light brings the triumph of thehuman spirit to the forefront. Our company willbring his vision to the audience and it will truly be anuplifting experience. I encourage you to take part inthis moving work.

I truly hope you enjoythe dancing and musicaltalent of Colorado Ballet.Thank you for attendingThe Sleeping Beauty and forsupporting Colorado Balletin our 52nd year!

Gil BoggsArtistic Director

Thank you for joining Colorado Ballet for one ofthe greatest classical ballets of all time, The SleepingBeauty! We are thrilled to bring you this masterpiecewith gorgeous choreography by Marius Petipa andmusic by Tchaikovsky, performed by the talentedmusicians of the Colorado Ballet Orchestra.

We are coming off of a very successful and artis-tic season. From being invited to perform at the VailInternational Dance Festival last August, to closingwith performances at the Gotham Dance Festival inNew York City in June, it was a banner year forColorado Ballet. Gil Boggs and the dancers contin-ue to take Colorado Ballet to new heights.

Our company will continue to bring thatmomentum to all of our productions this season, which promises to be one of the most challengingseasons we have ever had artistically and musically. This fall, Colorado Ballet presents two beloved sto-rybook ballets: The Sleeping Beauty and TheNutcracker. In the spring, our dancers will trulydemonstrate their talent in our repertory produc-tion Ballet MasterWorks, featuring Stravinsky’s TheRite of Spring, Balanchine’s Theme & Variations and aworld premiere work by San Francisco Ballet chore-ographer Val Caniparoli.

We close our season with Light/The Holocaust &Humanity Project. I had the opportunity to experi-ence Light at Ballet Austin last spring and it was amoving and uplifting experience. Light will not justbe a ballet presented by Colorado Ballet, it will alsoinclude a community outreach effort throughoutthe spring of 2013. I am so honored to sit on the taskforce for Light, a community education partnershipthat promotes the protection of human rightsagainst bigotry and discrimination through arts, education, and public dialogue. Light/The Holocaust& Humanity Project will take place in 2013 fromMartin Luther King Jr. Day in January, throughHolocaust Remembrance Week in mid-April, withevents and initiatives led by community partners. Each partner comes into this project with the com-mon hope that we can create a more just worldthrough conversations started in schools, theatres, public spaces, and in homes across Colorado. Theproject elements include Light, a public lectureseries, teacher professional development, schoolprograms on anti-bullying, outdoor art exhibit, visual and performance art productions, and com-munity dialogue including a town hall meeting.Governor John Hickenlooper and Mayor Michael B.Hancock will serve as Honorary Chairs.

I hope that you enjoyThe Sleeping Beauty and allof the productionsColorado Ballet will presentthis year.

From the Colorado Ballet Auxiliary

Welcome to another spectacular season for Colorado Ballet! Colorado Ballet Auxiliary was cre-ated in 1986 with the mission of supporting Colorado Ballet by raising funds, developing audi-ences and providing education programs such as the Esprit de Corps, Backstage and BalletAmbassadors programs. Through these efforts, the Auxiliary provides financial assistance forColorado Ballet education and outreach programs in schools throughout Metro Denver. This sup-port is possible because of the dedication and generosity of our Auxiliary members. On behalf ofColorado Ballet Auxiliary, we would like to thank you for your support of Colorado Ballet.

Last April was the debut of the hugely popular DancingWith Our Stars program at our annual Balletto di Gala. Ourguests were thrilled to watch our celebrity dancers competefor the disco ball trophy in a variety of styles from the tangoand the cha cha, to swing. Altitude Sports correspondentKyle Keefe and Colorado Ballet dancer Cara Cooper won the2012 disco ball trophy, and we cannot wait to see who willwin this year. The 2013 Gala will be held on Saturday April13, 2013. The evening will feature a silent auction with fantas-tic prizes, performances by our competing couples, and livebidding on the winning competitors. Mark your calendarsand look for the announcement of our celebrity dancers inThe Nutcracker program.

A long-standing Denver tradition, the Sugarplum Presentation Program returns again thisyear. The presentation of the 2012 Sugarplum Class on the stage at the Ellie Caulkins OperaHouse is set for opening night of The Nutcracker, Saturday, November 24. Throughout the run ofThe Nutcracker, each of our Sugarplum Alums will enjoy her special moment onstage withColorado Ballet dancers in the party scene during Act I of The Nutcracker. Both groups will behonored at the magnificent Sugarplum Ball at The Brown Palace Hotel on November 23. We alsoare excited to welcome back all former Sugarplums at a special dinner at Kevin Taylor’s at theOpera House before the performance on November 24. The Sugarplum Program provides a wonderful opportunity to grow friendships, learn about classical ballet, and support Colorado Ballet. All current first-grade families who would like to apply for the 2013 Sugarplum Program must submit applications in January 2013, information is available atwww.coloradoballetaux.org/presentation-programs.

Our Esprit de Corps program for third, fourth and fifth graders and Backstage program forsixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders have an exciting season planned too. They will learn aboutthe epitome of classical ballet with The Sleeping Beauty, as well as the progression of balletthrough the 20th century with Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, Balanchine’s Theme and Variations, anda new work by Val Caniparoli. Both programs feature social gatherings, Colorado Ballet per-formances, backstage tours, watching company class onstage before performances, and gettingto meet and talk with dancers. These programs not only offer young balletomanes rare opportu-nities to learn about ballet firsthand, but also are wonderful social groups for young ladies learn-ing to become involved in the arts. Additionally, the young ladies in Backstage will have theopportunity to attend Colorado Ballet’s fourth production Light|The Holocaust and HumanityProject, to coincide with the eighth grade curricular focus on the Holocaust in many area schools.

We hope you will become a member of Colorado Ballet Auxiliary and join us in our contin-ued support of Colorado Ballet. For information regarding membership and our programs, please visit the Auxiliary website, www.coloradoballetaux.org.

A Season of Music and DanceMarking the Company’s 52nd season, the

four-production lineup will stay true to GilBoggs’ artistic vision of presenting superiorquality classical ballet and innovative dance.

Colorado Ballet opens its season with theclassical storybook ballet The SleepingBeauty, October 5-21, 2012 at the EllieCaulkins Opera House. This beloved fairytale features choreography by MariusPetipa and music by Tchaikovsky, per-formed by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra.

Colorado Ballet’s season continues inNovember with Denver’s favorite holidaytradition, The Nutcracker, November 24through December 24, 2012 at the EllieCaulkins Opera House. The Nutcracker fea-tures unforgettable characters and dazzlingcostumes and scenery by José Varona. Thisseasonal tradition will feature classic chore-ography paired with Tchaikovsky’s extraor-dinary arrangement performed live by theColorado Ballet Orchestra.

In February 2013, Colorado Ballet transi-tions from 19th century ballets to an innova-tive collection of three different works.Colorado Ballet will present the repertoryproduction Ballet MasterWorks with theColorado Ballet Orchestra February 22-March 3, 2013 at the Ellie Caulkins OperaHouse. Ballet MasterWorks will be a feast forthe senses. Highlighting this program willbe a celebration of the 100th anniversary ofIgor Stravinsky’s composition of The Rite ofSpring. Colorado Ballet is honored to per-form this ground breaking piece of music toGlen Tetley’s ballet Le Sacre du Printemps. The viewing of “Rite” in the Ellie CaulkinsOpera House promises to be much calmerthan the rioting that took place inside theThéâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris whenThe Rite of Spring premiered on May 29,1913.

Along with the celebration ofStravinsky’s incredible music and the cho-reography of Glen Tetley, Colorado Balletwill perform a ballet by one of the greatest

choreographers who ever lived, GeorgeBalanchine’s Theme & Variations, performedto the final movement of Tchaikovsky’sSuite No. 3 for Orchestra in G major, Op. 55.

In keeping with Colorado Ballet’s com-mitment to new works, we are proud tobring in Val Caniparoli, choreographer forSan Francisco Ballet to create a new work onthe Company, with music by Poul Rouders.Caniparoli’s versatility has made him one ofthe most sought after American choreogra-phers in the United States and abroad, con-tributing to the repertories of more than 35dance companies. He has created a body ofwork that is rooted in classicism and influ-enced by all forms of movement.

Colorado Ballet will close out the seasonwith Light /The Holocaust & HumanityProject March 29-31, 2013 at the NewmanCenter at the University of Denver. Makingits Denver debut, this ballet explores theissues surrounding the Holocaust. Thework demonstrates human suffering in theface of genocide, as well as people’s capaci-ty to survive and flourish as individualsand as a community. When it premiered in2005, Light /The Holocaust & HumanityProject brought national attention to BalletAustin and choreographer Stephen Mills.Set to the music of five notable contempo-rary composers, Mills' original choreogra-phy turns the spotlight on discriminationand the triumph of the human spirit. Millshas not only given the dance world a cre-ation of reflection and hope, but also a workthat transcends everyday life as we know it.There is a very powerful feeling in the the-ater during the performance of Light andattendees will walk away with a true sensethat there is kindness in mankind.

The ballet serves as the cornerstone of a three-month community educationcampaign about human rights and tolerance. For more information, visit coloradoballet.org/light.

Dance Renaissance: Focusing onCreative Movement and Ballet

Dance Renaissance is an after school res-idency that lasts 10-15 weeks and most class-es focus on creative movement and ballet. The students study a variety of dance con-cepts while working on spatial awareness, problem solving, and strengthening thebody and brain. The program culminateswith an “Informance” for the parents, school, and community. Colorado Balletprovides students with dancewear and theopportunity to attend a Colorado Ballet per-formance at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.Select Dance Renaissance students are invit-ed to participate in a Summer Dance Campat Colorado Ballet Studios, and one studentis chosen annually for a full-year scholar-ship to Colorado Ballet Academy.Scholarship students have performed withthe professional company in various pro-ductions, including The Nutcracker and AMidsummer Night’s Dream.

“For most students in the program,Dance Renaissance is their first exposure todance,” said Marlene Strang, ColoradoBallet Director of Curriculum andInstruction. “The class is a fantastic intro-duction to the study of movement and thejoy of dance, but it also allows students to becreative, learn vocabulary, and developproblem-solving skills that relate to manyother subject areas.”

Dance Renaissance grew to 17 schoolsduring the 2011-2012 season. The programexpanded from Denver Public Schools toBoulder Public Schools and is also present incommunity centers.

“As an educator in Denver PublicSchools, it is my joy to expose children to allforms of performance arts,” said Jim Miller,Drama Teacher, Greenwood K-8. “Thanks toColorado Ballet and the Dance Renaissanceprogram, my students have not only beenexposed to dance, but had the opportunityto develop a love and technique for ballet. Ihave been a sponsor of the DanceRenaissance program since its inception.Over the last ten years, Colorado Ballet hasgiven over 600 of my students an amazing

beginning to their dance education. In addi-tion to the dance students, the CB has invit-ed my entire school body to ballet perform-ances that will live in the memories of all ofmy students for years to come. Thanks to thededication of many of the DanceRenaissance teachers, we have placed sixstudents in the Denver School for thePerforming Arts (one student begins herfreshman year in college this Fall in dance.).The program has reached girls and boysaging from 5 to 15. The impact this programhas made on students, faculty and staff isoverwhelming. We look forward to anotheryear of dance education as this 2012/13-yearbegins. I only hope Colorado Ballet contin-ues its commitment to dance education andthe students continue their love for dance. Iwill forever be in their debt.”
