Why did Colonisation take place?Colonialism normally refers to a period of history from the 15th to the 20th century when people from Europe established colonies on other continents. The reasons for the practice of colonialism at this time include:

•Money – there was money to be made, selling exotic goods in Europe and European goods in colonies•Power – through conquest, increasing the land, subjects (people) and wealth of the King or Queen •Opportunity – Europeans could escape harsh rulers and religious persecution by starting a new life in a colony •Mission – Many colonists believed that non-Europeans were backwards and needed civilising
