I am excited to share with you some of our program outputs and impacts from the year. In 2017, VMN volunteers reported 6,402 hours of service on projects pertaining to your agency. These hours include service directly with the agency, such as providing educational programs at New Kent Forestry Center, collecting seeds for VDOF nurseries, and planting trees at the VDOF headquarters. They also include thousands of hours of invasive plant management on public lands, tree plantings, educational events for Arbor Day, and American Chestnut restoration work. In total, this service equates to $172,598 in monetary value (IndependentSector.org). Thanks to a DOF Urban and Community Forestry grant, we have been sharing many continuing education and volunteer opportunities related to urban forestry with our volunteers. We also have been providing information about urban forestry through our newsletter and webinar series. We will provide a full report on those activities in our report at the end of the grant period. In the attached infographic, you will find the program-wide 2017 statistics. These statistics reflect many more hours that were not directly with VDOF, but that align with your agency’s mission and programs. For example, VMN volunteers educated property owners about conservation landscaping and the value of native plants and trees. With your in-kind support, we continued to grow our program and make positive impacts for the Commonwealth’s natural resources. Your in-kind contribution of staff time for training volunteers, leading projects, advising chapters, and serving on our committees is a critical part of our program. We hope that your agency will consider providing a monetary contribution to our base program operations in the next fiscal year. Our base budget includes two part-time staff members, Tiffany Brown and Terri Keffert, who are vital for program and volunteer coordination. It also includes volunteer recognition items and other program supplies, program communications tools, staff travel to teach and meet with volunteers, training events, and other important functions of the statewide program. On behalf of all our volunteers, I thank you for your support. Please let me know if you have any questions about this report or our volunteer activities, if you would like me to provide you with any other materials, or if you would like to discuss additional opportunities for collaboration.
