March19,2018DearVMNSteeringCommittee,ExecutiveCommittee,andChapterAdvisorrepresentativesfromVDOF,ThankyouforyourcontinuedsupportoftheVirginiaMasterNaturalistprogramin2017.Iamexcitedtosharewithyousomeofourprogramoutputsandimpactsfromtheyear.In2017,VMNvolunteersreported6,402hoursofserviceonprojectspertainingtoyouragency.Thesehoursincludeservicedirectlywiththeagency,suchasprovidingeducationalprogramsatNewKentForestryCenter,collectingseedsforVDOFnurseries,andplantingtreesattheVDOFheadquarters.Theyalsoincludethousandsofhoursofinvasiveplantmanagementonpubliclands,treeplantings,educationaleventsforArborDay,andAmericanChestnutrestorationwork.Intotal,thisserviceequatesto$172,598inmonetaryvalue(IndependentSector.org).ThankstoaDOFUrbanandCommunityForestrygrant,wehavebeensharingmanycontinuingeducationandvolunteeropportunitiesrelatedtourbanforestrywithourvolunteers.Wealsohavebeenprovidinginformationabouturbanforestrythroughournewsletterandwebinarseries.Wewillprovideafullreportonthoseactivitiesinourreportattheendofthegrantperiod.Intheattachedinfographic,youwillfindtheprogram-wide2017statistics.ThesestatisticsreflectmanymorehoursthatwerenotdirectlywithVDOF,butthatalignwithyouragency’smissionandprograms.Forexample,VMNvolunteerseducatedpropertyownersaboutconservationlandscapingandthevalueofnativeplantsandtrees.Withyourin-kindsupport,wecontinuedtogrowourprogramandmakepositiveimpactsfortheCommonwealth’snaturalresources.Yourin-kindcontributionofstafftimefortrainingvolunteers,leadingprojects,advisingchapters,andservingonourcommitteesisacriticalpartofourprogram.Wehopethatyouragencywillconsiderprovidingamonetarycontributiontoourbaseprogramoperationsinthenextfiscalyear.Ourbasebudgetincludestwopart-timestaffmembers,TiffanyBrownandTerriKeffert,whoarevitalforprogramandvolunteercoordination.Italsoincludesvolunteerrecognitionitemsandotherprogramsupplies,programcommunicationstools,stafftraveltoteachandmeetwithvolunteers,trainingevents,andotherimportantfunctionsofthestatewideprogram.Onbehalfofallourvolunteers,Ithankyouforyoursupport.Pleaseletmeknowifyouhaveanyquestionsaboutthisreportorourvolunteeractivities,ifyouwouldlikemetoprovideyouwithanyothermaterials,orifyouwouldliketodiscussadditionalopportunitiesforcollaboration.
