COLLEGE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES & HUMANITIES

MASTER DEGREE IN SOCIAL WORK (M.S.W.)

Duration: 2 years, period of four semesters. (Admission open for the batch 2018-19)

Eligibility: The candidates who have passed B.A./B.Sc./B.Com/B.S.W./B.B.M degree

programme of Mangalore University or any other examination recognised by the

University as equivalent there to with 40% aggregate excluding languages.

About Master Degree in Social Work ( M.S.W)

Man is a social, psychological and spiritual individual responding to establish equilibrium

with economic, political and cultural milieu around him. The college of Social Sciences and

Humanities is envisioned to offer courses which would develop the students into socially

sensitive individuals and responsible citizens focusing on man as the centre stage of all

institutions that govern his social life. The college was founded in the year 2001 with the

introduction of Master of Social Work (MSW) two year post-graduate programme. Students

of professional social Work, have to apply theoretical frameworks and scientific orientation,

practice interventions with individuals within the environment, across the lifespan, and at

micro, mezzo and macro level. Along with this to prepare persons to recognize the influence

of research and policy development, understand the structure, mechanisms of oppression and

privilege, demonstrate the knowledge and skills to work with the people at risk, empower

populations to promote social and economic justice. The College offers excellent learning

atmosphere. Students are exposed to a variety of curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular

activities that transform them into dynamic change agents who are able to make a difference

by their presence wherever they are. Students from different parts of the country and regions

who enroll in the college make it truly inclusive and multi-cultural. The college promotes

research in relevant fields of social science and offer Ph.D. programme in accordance with

the regulations of the University.

Special Features of the Program

Master of Social Work (MSW): Professional post graduation course, promote a sense of

social responsibility and commitment, offering preferential services to the marginalized

sections of society.

Preparing students: The Social Work course prepares students who are socially concerned

and competent to meet the social development and human rights promotion needs.

Theory and Field practicum: The MSW consists of theoretical leaning; field practicum will

help to practice skills to deal with the problems and research project.

Seminars and workshops: Organizing and participating in National-level seminars help

students develop skills in paper writing and presentation on various topics related to the

profession.

Internship/ Block field work: Practical work for three weeks in an agency or organization

based on specialization will help them to gain work experience during the course itself.

Opportunity to seek higher studies: the curriculum, the subject and the project work will

equip the students with the research skills, which will be useful for those who seek higher

education like M Phil and Ph D.

Three electives: Three electives are offered to MSW students- Personal Management and

Industrial Relations (PM and IR), Medical and psychiatric social work (MPSW) and

community development (CD).

Duel Specialization: Personal Management and Industrial Relations (PM and IR), and

community development (CD); Medical and psychiatric social work (MPSW) and community

development (CD).is provided.

Social activists and the policy makers: They can involve in the process of policy

development, create awareness among the general public to initiate present burning issues and

put pressure on the government.

Career Opportunities

Job opportunities at Industrial sector: Personal Management and Industrial Relations (PM

and IR), equips students with skills to work as officers in the areas of Public Relation

Officers, Human Recourse Development, Personal Management or Industrial Relations.

Medical and psychiatric social work (MPSW): This elective equips students to work in the

fields of Physical and Mental Health, Hospital setting, the Schools, Family Counselors,

Medical and Psychiatric fields, Nursing homes and Rehabilitation centres etc

Community Development (CD): helps develop professional skills to work for Community’s

Organizations and Development, Advocacy social action. Work for the vulnerable or

Marginalized groups, Government and Non Government Prganizations, Social Welfare,

Health Industry, National and International funding agencies, Projects, Corporate

Organizations, the Panchayat, Block District or State levels.
