RMI ALUM FOCUS – Purvaja Soochit Purvaja was an RMI student at NMSU, originally from the country of Mauritius. While attending the University of Alberta, she was selected for a scholarship to study abroad and chose to attend New Mexico State University to pursue risk management courses. During her time at New Mexico State University, she had the opportunity to attend the RIMS Conference in Philadelphia and joined the Gamma Iota Sigma chapter for risk management. Her experiences at NMSU have been a key driver in shaping her interest in the insurance and risk management industry. Purvaja returned to Canada and completed work terms in personal line underwriting, asset management and banking prior to graduating from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor’s of Science specializing in Actuarial Science and Statistics. Currently, Purvaja works as a technology consultant at Deloitte in Calgary. She has had the opportunity to be part of large scale technological transformation across industries in Canada. Purvaja is also hoping to leverage her analytical skills to participate in the innovation efforts in the insurance industry. During her free time, she enjoys getting away to the Canadian Rockies for a hike.

Gamma Iota Sigma

The professional fraternity (Beta Beta chapter) hosted two bake sales on campus over the course of the spring semester as fundraisers. Those efforts will help the organization’s goal of becoming financially independent and will enable our members to attend industry related events, like the GIS Annual Conference in Dallas, TX from September 28-30, 2017.

GIS also designed and purchased t-shirts that will be worn by our members while attending off-campus industry events and community service events.

These shirts were made possible by the support of Hub International - Las Cruces. If you would like to see your company’s name on our shirts or if you would like to support the only insurance and risk management fraternity in New Mexico, please contact advisor Mike McGonigle via email at [email protected] or via phone at (575) 646-4091.

New Mexican Resident / Finance & Insurance Professor / and Bataan Death March Survivor passes away

Finance and Insurance Professor Lester I. Tenney passed away in February at age

96. Dr. Tenney was a past president of the Western Risk and Insurance

Association. While he didn't earn degrees or teach at NMSU (Dr. Tenney taught at

Arizona State University in the College of Business), he was living in Carlsbad, NM at the

time of his death and he was also a survivor of the Bataan Death March. The Bataan

Death March had a large impact on the state of New Mexico, given that many of the U.S.

soldiers in Bataan were from New Mexico, specifically from the 200th/515th Coast Artillery

of the National Guard. Dr. Tenney also wrote a book about his experiences titled, “My

Hitch in Hell.”

A BIG THANK YOU!

For the past several years Renee Brown has been instrumental in putting our semi-annual stakeholder newsletter together. She has a knack for taking my “chicken scratch” and turning it into a professional-looking newsletter. Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for Renee, she will be retiring at the end of June 2017. Renee has worn a lot of hats over the past decade, including Editor of the College of Business web page and as a historian/archivist for the College of Business. Her talents will be missed, but we wish her all the best in retirement!

The NMSU Foundation offers many opportunities for loyal supporters to contribute to the success of NMSU students, faculty, and staff for generations to come. Naming opportunities include:
