COLLEGE CONNECTIONS ACADEMY 2010-2011 The College Connections Academy is a partnership between Cumberland County Schools and Fayetteville Technical Community College to provide expanded opportunities for more students to participate in career and technical courses and to expose students to a variety of high skill career options. • The College Connections Academy (CCA) allows high school juniors and seniors to take courses on FTCC’s main campus, bundled so that most will lead to a community college certificate. • CCA Students will take classes at FTCC Monday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. • Transportation will be provided by Cumberland County Schools to FTCC from each of the ten comprehensive high schools. • Each certificate program offered for 2010-2011 will be a one-year program. Students have the option of participating in one program in their junior year and a second one in their senior year. • Successful completion of one of the certificate programs will entitle the students to participate in the FTCC spring graduation. Students will also receive an honors cord that may be worn at their high school graduation. • CCA Students will be responsible for textbooks and supply costs. Supply costs may include uniforms and special tools or equipment. • CCA Offerings for 2010-2011 school year include: • Carpentry • Event Planning • Demi-Chef • Gaming Design • Digital Graphics • Medical Coding Specialist • Exploring Health Careers • Nail Technology • Elementary Teacher Education • Sustainable Design NOTE: Carpentry and Exploring Health Careers will lead to a completion award and NOT a community college certificate. Carpentry introduces students to basic construction methods. Learn the skills needed to be a “do-it-yourselfer”. Topics include safety, hand/power tool use, site preparation, measurement and layout, footings and foundations, construction framing, and other related topics.

Demi-Chef prepares students for entry-level positions in the catering and cold foods display fields. Students will learn basic cookery and cold food preparation concepts and techniques. Elementary Teacher Education offers students who may be interested in becoming an elementary school teacher the opportunity to get a head start on their degree. Nail Technolgoy curriculum provides competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the nail technology industry. Sustainable Design introduces the concepts and principles related to green site development and architectural design. Students will be introduced to basic architectural drafting techniques; plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems as they relate to green design; water and energy efficiency; and solar design theory and application. Credits obtained in these courses may be transferred directly into the Architectural Technology associate degree.
