Step 1: Getting Started Choose a Facilitator Student work is

available for all participants

No background of work is provided

Participants observe or read work in silence- brief notes on individual observations

Page 4: Collaborative Assessment Conference Protocol

Step 2: Describing the Work Facilitator Asks:

What do you see? Group members

provide answers without making judgments about quality of work or personal bias

If a judgment emerges, facilitator asks for the evidence on which the judgment is based

Step 3: Asking Questions About the Work Facilitator Asks:

What questions does this work raise for you? (group members state any questions they have about the work, the child, the assignment…)

Presenting teacher may jot down questions posed but does not answer them yet

Step 4: Speculating About What the Student is Working On Facilitator asks:

What do you think the child is working on?

Participants bases on their reading or observations of the work, to answer this question

Step 5: Hearing From the Presenting Teacher Facilitator invites the

presenting teacher to speak Perspective of the student’s

work, describing what they see in it, may respond to some of the questions raised, adding information deemed important to context

Comments on anything surprising or unexpected that they heard during describing, questioning and speculating steps

Step 6: Discussing Implications for Teaching & Learning Facilitator invites

everyone to share any thoughts they have about: their own

teaching children’s learning Ways to support

this particular child in future instruction

on the experiences of or reactions to the conference as a whole or to particular parts of it
