Design Approach

Focus on people and content

Collaborate 2015 Design Principles

1.

Adapt the interface to the user’s context2.

”…it’s cumbersome to have to manipulate raising hands etc - all of the little tech commands take the focus off of the discussion. The technology is supposed to enhance the class - not be the class."

- an instructor, on the purpose of tech tools

Collaborate 2015 is used for people to connect with each other and to share ideas. Audio, video, and shared content should always be at the forefront.

• Reduce the number of always-present visual elements on the screen

• Use notifications for important information, reducing the need to keep the chat and participants panel in view

Focus on people and contentCollaborate 2015 Design Approach

“…It takes my mind a few seconds to remember where it is and what I am looking for on the list, because I am also trying to remember what to go to next in the presentation."

- an instructor, discussing attention and context

With so many different modes of use, it’s important that Collaborate 2015 works well in a variety of contexts.

• Present and organize content and video in the best way possible, based on how each is being used in the session

• Progressively display elements and features as-needed

• Provide different video modes to support everything from small group conversations to larger lectures

Additional Reference Slides

Known Bugs or IssuesIssue Workaround

Reconnect button that is displayed after a user is removed from session is broken

Reload page

Whiteboard / Shared File occasionally does not display for a participant when it is shared before they join

Advance slide or stop and restart whiteboard / file sharing

Windows users will not see .pptx files in the list of files to upload

Change the file type filter in Windows Explorer prompt to “all files” or drag-and-drop the file into the UI

All visible audio and video panels will occasionally drop entirely and then come back about 5-10 seconds later

N/A – session will continue

When a moderator stops another moderators app share and does their own app share, the app share window will appear gray or loading

A moderator should stop their own app share before another moderators start one.

When a moderator stops app share, one participant’s video occasionally displays in two of the video areas

If possible, have that user disable video and audio for a little bit so they get out of the “active speaker” queue and then re-enable.
