forward to you visiting often, to tell us about life

after primary school. Good luck and all the very

best for the future!

It is with much sadness that we also farewell a

number of families who have been part of the

Coledale Public School community for a number of

years. We thank them for their friendship and

support, they will be sadly missed but leave knowing

they will always be welcome at CPS. All the best to

these families: Bartley, Bracegirdle, Frayne-Wills,

Heathcote, Stefanovski, Tsokos and Weall.

To all, have a safe, restful holiday and a wonderful

Christmas. I look forward to seeing all our students

return safely on Wednesday 29th January 2014.

What’s Been Happening……..

Since our last newsletter so much has happened

around our school, it is amazing what we can fit into

a fortnight!

Berry Camp On Wednesday 20 November Years 3-6 students

travelled to Berry for a fabulous three day camp.

During their stay, the students participated in

activities including the giant swing, canoeing,

archery, vertical challenge and team building

sessions. The students were great ambassadors for

Coledale Public School and many students displayed

impressive independence, leadership skills and

challenged their own abilities on several occasions.

The reflective practice shown by the Berry Camp

facilitators was most impressive and ensured the

camp supported the development of all students. A

big thank you to Mr Galvin, Ms. Gould, Mrs

Brokenborough and Mrs Bartlett for giving their

own time to accompany the group, especially at this

busy time of year.

BYOD Policy

Thank you to the many parents that have completed

this survey, if you haven’t here is the info again. We

are hoping to gather ideas from all our families, it is

your chance to share your thoughts.

Technology plays an integral part in our core

business of preparing our students, for life in our

ever changing world. Devices are now so more

sophisticated and readily available that we are

considering developing and implementing a BYOD

Policy for our school. This is a Bring Your Own

Device policy, which would essentially mean that

some students would bring along their own devices

to use in the classroom. It is still early days in our

policy development but we do need to know how

parents feel about this concept. I would really

appreciate if you could take 5 minutes and complete

the survey developed by P&C reps and some staff.

Simply follow the links below:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6NY6P9H The

survey will close on the 14th December.

School Improvements

We have had a lot of action around the school this

past fortnight – we have had the footings placed

ready for the demountable at the bottom of the

garden. The building is expected to be craned into

position before Christmas. We have also had our

ramp and new doorway installed. The railing and

roof will be the final installation on this project and

this will occur in the next few days. During the

holidays we will also have concrete laid around the

seats in the main playground area.

Unexpected Magic

What a wonderful community celebration thanks to

the students, staff, parents and even ex-students.

It truly was splendid to witness our students

perform after all our preparation. Their

development of musical and dance skills throughout

the semester was just terrific. The 3-6 students

also displayed their art pieces that they developed

over many weeks. This combined with the

Fairground and Sideshow Alley acts gave us a truly

amazing night of entertainment. Thank you to the

many students that gave up a number of Sundays

afternoons to perfect their individual and small

group acts.

‘Unexpected Magic’ is truly a wonderful experience

for our students and the school community. It is

only possible because of the many dedicated,

talented parents and community members that have

spent many hours with the students developing

their confidence, skills and knowledge in the

Creative Arts and Indigenous Culture. Thank you to

everyone that contributed to our night in a small,

large or enormous way. Your efforts are all

appreciated by the staff and students.

It is also very pleasing to note that the P&C has had

financial success with this event. Very shortly there

will also be an opportunity for parents to purchase

some wonderful footage and photos from the night.

Keep a look out for an email arriving shortly about

this special offer.

Combined Scripture and Final Ethics Class

Thank you very much to all the Religious

Instructors who have visited our school each week

this year. We appreciate your efforts and do hope

you all have a safe and happy holiday season. We

look forward to seeing you return in 2014. A very

special thank you to Mrs Ruth Nakin who is

stepping down after being a volunteer at our school

each week for the past 15 years. A truly amazing

effort which has been very much appreciated.

Teddy Bears’ Picnic

Yesterday our Kindergarten Class for 2014

returned for their final transition morning. They

had a wonderful time completing ‘bear activities’

with their buddies and peers. As well they

experienced our lunch time and had fun in the

playground socialising. Thank you to the many

parents that joined us for the morning. The next

visit will be for their ‘Best Start Assessment’, then

all Kindy students will commence school on Monday

3rd February 2014.

School Leaders 2014

All eleven candidates presented some heart felt

speeches on Tuesday to the school community. They

all were confident and keen to share with the

audience their ideas. Students K-5 have all voted

today and the leaders will be announced at

Presentation Day next Friday. Congratulations to all

our candidates and good luck to you all in the polling.

You are all worthy of being elected but remember if

you are disappointed we still need support in so

many other ways around the school. You are all fine

examples of student leaders.

Toys n Tucker

Thank you to the many families that have sent along

some food items or presents for the Toys N Tucker

appeal. Only days remain now if you wish to

contribute as all items are being collected on 10th

December 2013.

Rise and Shine Awards

Last night we received 1st Place in the Best Ongoing

Environmental Initiative Section of the Wollongong

City Council Rise and Shine Awards. We received a

certificate and $500 for our prize. The $500 will

come in handy to purchase some more tools. Thank

you to the students and parents that attended the

awards ceremony – Tania, Lisa, Lynn, Annie, Daniel,

Maya, Louis, Max, Ella, Tamzin, Kaimana, Tallis and

Jorja.

Library and Home Readers Stocktake

Our library is now closed for the annual stock take.

It is very important that ALL school library books

and Home Readers are returned. We would

appreciate the prompt return of all reading

materials so we can sort and arrange boxes ready

for 2014.

Coming Events…….. Smith’s Hill HS Drama

The Youth Theatre Class from Smith’s Hill HS will

be visiting our school on Friday 6th December to

present a performance which explores the issue of

environmental responsibility. Our students are able

to watch the show if they bring along a gold coin

donation. The donation helps pay for the bus to

transport the students to our school. It is usually

entertaining and I thank the high school for

providing this opportunity to show our students

what they can aspire to in the future.

Year 6 Jamberoo Excursion

Mrs Brokenborough and Year 6 are looking forward

to their annual excursion to Jamberoo Recreation

Park. This will take place on Tuesday 10th

December and is for year 6 students only. This,

along with the Year 6 Farewell, is a special

celebration event for our Year 6 students.

Students will be leaving school at 9:00am and will

return at approximately 4pm. Travel will be by

private car and they are to remember their water

bottle, swimmers, wetsuit, towels, medications,

hats, lunch and fruito. Payment is due by Friday 6th

December.

Final K-6 Assembly – Thursday 12th December at

9am

Our final K-6 assembly for this year will be held

next Thursday. This assembly is being led by our

school leaders. Awards will be handed out as usual

and we will also be presenting awards to students

for the Premier Sporting Challenge as well as K-2

Premier Reading Challenge. Parents are most

welcome to join us.

Presentation Day

Our school Presentation Day will be held on Friday

13th December at 12pm at Coledale Surf Life Saving

Club. The following awards will be presented: Kinder

Books, Stage 1 Celebration of Learning Certificates,

Year 3-6 Class Awards, School Sport Awards and

Major Awards for 2013. As well the School Leaders

for 2014 will be announced and each class will

perform a small item. We hope parents are able to

join us for this special afternoon.

Gold Party

This year we have had a record number of students

achieve ‘Gold’ in the Coledale Awards program. All

the wonderful home reading, fantastic behaviour

and striving to achieve well in class has paid

dividends for 70 students. So on Monday 16th

December those with an invitation will be attending

the Gold party at lunchtime with Mrs Potter.

Volunteer’s Afternoon Tea

Don’t forget the Volunteer’s Afternoon Tea to be

held also on Monday 16th December at 2pm. This

is an opportunity for the school and staff to thank

all the wonderful parents and community members

who have provided valuable assistance in the

classrooms or in support of school programs

throughout the year. Please RSVP by 13th

December 2013 for catering purposes.

Talent Quest

Auditions were held today for the 16 acts that

were entered into this fun activity conducted by

Mrs Stalker. The students will be able to watch

the best acts on Tuesday 17th.

Year 6 Farewell

The Year 6 Farewell will take place on Tuesday

17th December at the Coledale Surf Club from

6.30pm. Mrs Brokenborough and Mrs Bartlett and

parents have been extremely busy organising a fun-

filled night for the students. Year 5 and 6 parents

are invited to attend the presentation section of

the farewell scheduled for 8:15pm.

Payment of $15 for this event must be paid for by

Tuesday 10th December.

Picnic Day + Last day

Our Picnic Day will be held on Wednesday 18th

December. On this day the students will be

permitted to wear sun safe mufti clothes. They will

need to bring a hat, have their shoulders covered

and also be wearing covered in shoes. The students

will be rotating through some fun activities

throughout the day. A jumping castle and sausage

sizzle will be provided for them on this day as a

reward for the wonderful efforts and respect they

have shown to the school rules throughout the

school year. Students should still bring lunch and

their water bottles on this day. They may also like

to bring a towel to sit on. In the afternoon Mr

Galvin is keen for a soccer game to take place

between parents and students. This will commence

at 2.00pm, parents are asked to see Mr Galvin if

they want to be involved.

P&C

Please don’t forget the final P&C event for this

year, the Cricket Day this Sunday at St James

Park. The final meeting for this year of the

Coledale Public P&C will be held on Monday 16th

December at 7pm. This change in date is due to a

clash with the Year 6 farewell. Many thanks to the

P&C Executive and all parents who have assisted

with the P&C functions throughout the year. We

look forward to seeing you at the Parent helper’s

Afternoon Tea on Monday 17th. The P&C have been

very active throughout the year with fundraising

and school decision-making roles. The school

learning programs have also benefitted from P&C

donations this year. This support is greatly

appreciated by all staff and students. The staff

and I look forward to working closely with you again

in 2014.

School Development Days

While the students finish for the year on

Wednesday 18th, all staff will take part in two days

of professional development activities to conclude

the year. These days will see the staff undertake

the myriad of mandatory training modules

necessary for the school to function, such as Child

Protection, Code of Conduct, as well as school-based

development in the proposed new curriculum to be

introduced in 2014. We will combine with our local

small schools group for some of this training.

End of Year Reports

Final reports will be forwarded home on Monday

16th December. We aim to make the reports easy

to understand and informative. I have been very

impressed with the achievements of the students

and feel the reports accurately reflect their

current progress. As always, should you have any

questions regarding your child’s report, please make

an appointment to discuss this with your child’s

teacher.

General Notices………… School Uniform

Showing pride in our school is one of our school

rules. This means that students should be wearing

their school uniform and school hat with pride.

Our uniform states that both girls and boys should

wear black shoes. This means black with black laces,

not black with coloured laces / stripes or patterns.

Joggers may be worn with the sports uniform only.

Next year in 2014 we will be enforcing this. I would

like parents to consider this when making purchases

for the new school year. Black joggers are fine but

they must be black with black laces. I would also

appreciate if the sports uniform joggers are mainly

one colour and preferably not fluro colours.

We have a variety of styles of school hats available

and all students should ensure they have a school

hat ready for the start of the school year.

Please fill in an order form or see Michelle or

Priscella for all your uniform requirements.

Staff and Classes 2014

At the end of the school year we will bid farewell to

Miss Cocking. I would like to take this opportunity

to say a huge thankyou to Miss Cocking who joined

us in July as an Intern Pre-Service teacher and

then remained during Term 4 as my Principal relief.

She has always been flexible and willing to adjust to

fit in with the ever changing timetable to suit the

school. Year 1/2 have enjoyed the many activities

she has provided them to help them achieve success

in their learning. I would like to wish her all the

best for the future.

In 2014 we will have six classes. They will be as

follows:

Kindergarten with Mrs Potter/Mrs Badham in A

Block.

K/1 with Ms. Gould in A Block.

1/2 with Mrs Brokenborough/Mrs Bartlett in B

Block.

3/4 with Mrs Munn in the demountable.

4/5 with Mr Galvin in the new demountable.

5/6 with Mrs Stone in A Block.

The students in each class will be finalised over the

next few weeks and we will inform the students in

year 1, 4 and 5 which class they will be in by the end

of the school year.

Stationary Packs

Unfortunately we won’t be having stationary packs.

Students in Years 3-6 should provide their own

clearly labelled stationary in a pencil case. When

purchasing we have found from experience the

cheaper pencils’ tend to break constantly. The

following is what students will need:

In pencil cases:

Lead pencils;

White rubber;

Glue stick;

Ruler;

Scissors;

Coloured pencils;

Sharpener;

Red/Blue pens;

Highlighter;

Thin black marker;

For the classroom:

Tissue box;

Hand gel;

Optional:

Crayons;

Textas.

Swimming carnival 31/1/14

Swimming Carnival will be sent home today. It will

April 2014. We are trying to get organised and give

families the opportunity to finalise payment for a

your child has lost articles of clothing or containers

throughout term. It will be emptied out of all

articles on the last day of school.
