We would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which Coledale Public School is situated. We pay our respects to the

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our
students and their parents as we return to a new
school term. The holidays were really fantastic
weather and hopefully allowed everybody time to
recharge the batteries. During this term a few
highlights will be quality learning, NAPLAN, Reports
and Interviews, Choral Festival preparation,
Aboriginal Language classes, PSSA, District Cross
Country and Athletics just to name a few. Our
newsletter is very informative along with our
website. Parents really do need to take 5 minutes
with a cuppa and read through it so they are aware
of what is happening at our wonderful school.
District Cross Country
Students have been given notes for the District
Cross Country. First race is at 10an at Bulli Park on
Fri 10th May. Your help would be greatly appreciated
on the day, assisting the teachers to marshal. If
you are able to help for half an hour please see Mr
Galvin and he will work out a roster system. Notes
and money are due back no later than Wed 8th May.
School starting time
Parents are reminded that school commences at 9
am and that all students should be at school by this
time.
Students should arrive at school between 8:30 -
8.55am. Continued lateness to school places
students in a position of feeling anxious and
unprepared for the commencement of the school
day.
2014 Enrolments
Next year a number of parents are telling me that I
should expect another school growth. We do have
very full classes at the moment and it will not take
too many new enrolments to push us to the 6th class.
This would require another demountable. I am very
keen to be well prepared so I would ask that all
parents who have a child starting school next year
to drop in and get an enrolment form from the
office. I would also appreciate if you could let
neighbours and friends know that our enrolments
are now open. Remember though they must reside in
our feeder area.
Voluntary Contributions
Most schools, including ours, rely heavily on the
generosity of their community through the
Voluntary Contribution scheme. Our contributions
for 2013 are $40 for a single child and $70 for a
family. If you would like to support the school in
this way, it would be greatly appreciated.
Last year we received $ 4 000 from our school
community and this purchased 9 computers for our
lab. This year the voluntary contributions collected
will be used to purchase ipads and the
accessories.
If you are in a company or business where it is
possible to get tax benefits from contributions
such as this and you are in the position to
contribute more please feel free. The more money
we get in the pot the more ipads we will be able to
purchase.
What’s Been Happening
Regional Funding
At the end of last term I received notification that
our application for funding to support our
implementation of Aboriginal Language classes was
granted. This will mean that we will have $5 000 to
support this program. Our wonderful show –
Unexpected Magic will also be able to benefit from
this successful grant. There will be more about this
in the coming issues of our newsletter.
Cross Country
What a wonderful morning we had in the last week
of term cheering all the students around the
course. It was such a delight to witness the
children and parents being so positive and

encouraging. Good luck to all our competitors at the
District Carnival on Friday 10th May.
P&C General Meeting
Thankyou to the many parents that took time out of
their busy schedules to attend this meeting. All the
positions were filled, many by the same people that
have been doing a terrific job in the past. There
were a few new faces and lots of positive
discussions. Please take time out to read their
report which can be found on the school website
under the P&C banner. I look forward to working
closely with the P&C as we strive to improve our
already wonderful school.
Helping Others - Shoe Collection
At the end of last term we appealed for shoes for
the Koonibba Community, near Ceduna. We are very
happy to report that Francis Rings with the help of
Charlotte Reid packed 91 pairs of shoes to be
couriered to the community. These were generously
donated from Planet and Coledale PS. A fantastic
effort from everyone who donated and helped.
Thanks also to Susie Crick from Planet for
contributing to the costs of the courier.
We are hoping it is the beginning of a relationship
that can grow further. Francis and the staff would
like to send a huge thankyou to all who
contributed
Peer Support Training
At the end of last term the Year 5/6 students had
a training day at the Surf Club. It was a terrific
day and all the students felt they had gained
knowledge and understanding about leadership. I
would like to thank Mrs Bartlett and a few of our
parents Dave, Geoff, Kimberley and Leah for
providing resources and their time. Our Peer
Support programs theme this year is Building
Resilience.
Our school would also like to publically thank
Coledale SLSC for their generosity in allowing us to
use their facilities.
Anzac Day Service
Thanks to all the parents that attended our special
service on the last day of school, especially Mr Dan
Robertson who gave the students a personal insight
into life as a soldier. Thank you also to our school
leaders who conducted the service and also to
Tamzin and Mikey who represented our school at
the Dawn Service at the RSL.
Staff Development Days
On Monday teachers from our school participated in
a combined training day with schools in the SeaCliff
Community of Schools. Our focus was on the
implementation of the new curriculum and the new
technologies that will assist in the delivery of the
new English syllabus.
On Tuesday we hosted the other small schools in
our COS – Scarborough and Otford PS. We
continued with our Focus on Reading in the morning
and then developing a deepening understanding of
the organization and content of the new English
syllabus with sessions designed to enhance staff
knowledge and expertise.
Staff will continue throughout the year completing
familiarisation sessions with the syllabus in
preparation for our full implementation of this
document in 2014.
Parents are reminded that Term 3 School
Development Day is on Monday 15th July and there
will be two further School Development Days at the
end of Term 4 – 19th/20th December.
Peace Posters
A big than you to our Year 5/6 students who
participated in the 2013/14 Peace Poster Contest.
Congratulations to Samson Cox whose work was
chosen as one of the six winning posters. His art

judging at the next level. Congratulations and good

opportunity to attend the Band Camp. I am sure
they will enjoy the experience. We look forward to
a great report about it Maya and Amelie.

Staff Long Service leave + Reports and
Parent Interviews
Later this term parents will receive a detailed
report of their child’s progress. This will be
followed up with the opportunity for parents to
meet for a formal interview with the teachers. As
Mrs Potter will be on leave during June staff have
agreed to try and get reports completed early so
they will be issued in the last week of May. Followed
by interviews in the first few weeks of June. Mrs
Potter has set her date for interviews as Thursday
30th May. Other dates will be advertised shortly.
NAPLAN 2013
This year NAPLAN will be held for all Year 3 and 5
students on 14 to 16 May. Parents will receive a
separate note concerning NAPLAN and a brochure
outlining how parents can support their child
through this assessment process.

Choral Festival
Our students in Year 3 - 6 have been busy
learning the songs that will form part of the
festival. Early next week we will ask a
commitment from students who wish to be in
the choir for the festival. We are very pleased
with the large number of students who are keen
to represent our school at this wonderful event.
