Social and Emotional Learning

This year’s school wide theme is based on the Core Social and

Emotional Competencies intertwined with the book Say Some-

thing by Peter H. Reynolds. Using this book, we can easily make

correlations to cultural identity and social injustice, both of which

staff discussed during the September Pro-D. It’s about giving stu-

dents the power of voice to “Say Something”!

Principal’s Message

September has come and gone already and we are happy to say that we are

in full swing! Even though we have had a few challenges to our September

start, everyone seems to be adjusting to our new daily routines. Thank you for

your patience with our staggered pick up & drop off times at school.

The one thing we know that hasn’t changed at Marlborough is that our

Marlborough Huskies are coming to school with smiles on their faces, eager to

learn while keeping safe! The staff at Marlborough looks forward to an exciting

and rewarding school year working with you and your children.

For families who have chosen the Transition Option, please contact your class-

room teacher when you are ready to send your child(ren) back to

Marlborough. Please give us a week’s notice to prepare the classroom

according to our new health and safety protocols for your child. In the mean-

time, you can check the Burnaby School District website for learning

activities for your child(ren) to do at home.

Although we won’t be able to host coffee & conversation at this time, please

feel free to call/email us at the office.

Attendance

If a student is going to be absent

or late for school, please call the

school at 604-296-9021 and leave

the following information on the

voicemail

(24 hour system):

Child name

Teacher name

Division

Reason for absence/

lateness

Safety Before Convenience As our school population has increased this year with new students and staff, our parking

lots continue to be a safety concern. Parents are asked to drop their children off on

Arrow Street (in front of the East Building) or on Dover Street.

Our parking lot off Nelson is designated for Burnaby School District staff members,

Welcome Centre families and the District Learning Resource Centre only and there is not

enough space for parents to park or drop off when bringing children to school. It is also

very unsafe for students and parents to be walking through the parking lot as staff

members are arriving and trying to park.

Cell Phones/School Phones

It has recently become very common for students to have

personal cell phones at school. Our position is that these cell

phones are intended for, and should only be used for, safety.

With that in mind, we ask for your support in reinforcing the

following guidelines:

• Cell phones (or any expensive items such as iPods) are

here at your child’s own risk in terms of loss or breakage.

• Cell phones should remain in students’ backpacks during

the day, including recess and lunch.

• All cell phones are to be turned off during the school day.

If students need to use the telephone during the day to make

important phone calls to parents, they may ask their class-

room teacher for a phone pass that allows them to use the

office telephone.

Students who do not follow these guidelines may have their

cell phones confiscated until the end of the school day when

a parent can come to the office to pick it up.

“Toonie for Terry”

Classes at Marlborough participated in the

40th Anniversary of the Terry Fox Run during the week of

September 21. Classes went out to the track over the

course of 4 days. Some students enjoyed the sunshine

while others braved the rain with their classes as they

walked/ran around the school track. Congratulations to

all our Huskies for raising over $700. All proceeds go toward

cancer research.

A Reminder to Parents : Lunch Utensils Please remember to include spoons, and forks in

your child’s lunch or recess snack. Unfortunately,

Peanut Awareness We are a peanut aware school. There

are many students in our school who

have a severe allergy to peanuts and/

or nuts. To respect the health concerns

of our student and school community

members, please avoid sending food

with nuts and/or nut ingredients in

snacks and lunches. Healthy alterna-

tives include soy beans, raisins, celery

or carrot sticks. We thank you for your

cooperation.

• A rain jacket

• Rubber boots so they can enjoy the puddles

• Rain pants

• An umbrella

• A rain hat or coat with a hood

• A change of clothes just in case. (sweatpants, sock,

underwear, t-shirt)

West Coast Recess & Lunch

We know that if children are well prepared to be outside in the rain

they actually enjoy it. As long as they stay dry and warm there is a

great deal of fun to be had in all kinds of weather. To be prepared to

be outside in the rain it is important for your child to have appropri-

ate clothing such as:

years. It is “personalized” with all the information and dates pertinent to

Ecole Marlborough School. We are selling the planners this year at a cost

of $8. These planners support the Health and Career Education Curricu-

lum of all students, Currently grade one to seven students are expected

to use them. Payment is available through Burnaby School CashOnline.

Dear Parents,

I am very happy to announce that the library is again open to students

for book selection. Although the library experience will differ from that

of the past, in order to ensure the safety of all, I will

continue to encourage students to read as much as possible in their

language(s) of instruction.

With the abrupt transition to remote learning in spring, many students did not have the

opportunity to return books that they borrowed before leaving. In order to ensure that

the greatest possible selection of books be available to all, I would ask that any unre-

turned library books be returned as soon as possible.

Regards, Mr. Irwin

Thank you for your support in encouraging reading!

dent from a safe distance.

PAC Annual General Meeting

Our PAC AGM is scheduled at 7 p.m., on Monday, Oct. 26,

2020. Please email [email protected] and

include with your name, your child(ren)’s name and division

number to obtain the virtual meeting link.

What is PAC?

Parent Advisory Councils (PAC) is the officially recognized collective voice of parents of their school.

A PAC, through its elected officers, may advise the school board, the principal and staff of the

school respecting any matter relating to the education of the students and the school. PAC strives

to represent the diversity within their communities and contribute to the benefit of all students by:

providing opportunities to educate and inform parents about the school; involving parents in volun-

teer activities; and openly discussing parents’ concerns and aspirations for their schools.

If you have any questions about the AGM or the PAC elections, please email marlborough-

[email protected].
