THER E were two persons in Boston at the same time bearingthe name of William H arv ey . One of them lived and diedthere ; the other subsequently removed to Taunton . Our Col .John Harvey was descended from William Harvey of Boston .
O scar Jewell H arv ey , author of The H arv ey Book,” of the
Taunton Line , W ilkesbarre , Penn ,1 899, says
I think it v ery clearly proved by the public records hereinreferred to , and by othe r records , that there was no WilliamH arv ey residing at Plymouth in 1 689, and that the two Williams then in New England,
’ were (1 ) William of Taunton ,whose wife was Joanna Hucker, and (2) William of Boston ,who married Martha Copp .
”
(PageWilliam H arv ey of Taunton married Joanna Hucker of C o
bannet, Apri l 2 , 1 6 39, and resided for some years in Boston .
From what part of England William Harvey came is notknown . We have a clue from the Will of Agnes Clarke ofA y shil l , or Ashill , Somerset, three miles west of Ilminster, and

these R egisters we might have been able , perhaps , to connectthe Family with the Parish of Ashill . The R ev . W . R . Hartwright

There were other Harveys in N ew England who were perhaps connected with our branch .
Joan Harvey , who died March 3 1 , 1 705 , married about 1 64 1R obert Barnard of Salisbury , 1 642—4 644 , of Andover 1 6451 6 6 3 , and subsequently of Nantucket, where he died in 1 6 82 .
Thomas Harvey married 1 643 , E lizabeth , daughter of ThomasWall of Hampton , N . H . , and living Aug . 2 0
,1 6 63
,when he
so ld land at Hampton , and perhaps in 1 6 83 .
William Harvey of Taunton was perhaps related .

I am indebted to Hoyt’ s work entitled The Old Familiesof Salisbury and Amesbury ,
” for much valuable information ;also to
'
the History of Sutton , N . by Mrs . Augusta Harvey Worthen . I have also vi sited three ancient cemeteries inAmesbury and Merrimac , and found only one Harvey gravestone
,that of Joseph
‘1 Harvey , who died Jan . 1 8 1 76 1 .
Prior to 1 752 the new year began on the 25th of March .
After the last day of Dec .,1 75 1 , the new year began Jan . in

married Nov . 1 0, 1 659, in Boston , by Gov . John Endicott,Henry Tewxbery , or Tuxbury, weaver . Some have thoughtthat William Harvey of Boston, and William Harvey of Taunton , were the same person , but there is no proof of this , and thePublic R ecords show the contrary . He is a lso said to havemarried Martha S locum , whi ch must have been .a second marriage , but there is no evidence of this , and the Wil l ofWilliamCopp , cordwainer, shows that his daughter Martha was themother of William Harvey ’ s chi ldren . His Will , dated O ct . 3 1 ,
1 6 6 2 , probated March 1 5 , 1 6 6 9—70, mentions the widow , nowmarried again, and her four Harvey children
Daughter Tewxbery to live in the house where son David lives,

Many removed from the old town of Salisbury and madea new settlement , which was commonly called the new town ,o r New Salisbury , March 1 4 , 1 6 54— 5 1 4 . 1 . Acovenant was drawn up between the old and new town , andthe inhabitants of the latter were taxed for certain purposes inthe old town till 1 66 7—8 , when it was in corporated under thename of Amesbury, sometimes spelled E amsbu ry and Almesbury . He was a carpenter bytrade ; was enrolled in the Train-band of Capt . Sargent, Col .John Greenleaf ’ s R egiment. Carpenters and Shipwrights werewanted to build boats and vessels on Lake Champlain and LakeGeorge . In 1 756 , drafts were made upon every Company inthe Province for soldiers . These were picked men , and theirservices , in addition to doing strictly military duties , were employed in constructing vessels to combat the French on thelakes . They were Shipwrights and carpenters . They wereconstantly so employed in 1 755 , 1 756 and 1 757 . This workwent on
,summer and winter, and more progress was made in
the latter season , because there was less danger of attack thenfrom the French and their Indian allies . Those vessels thatsurvived the French and Indian wars di d valiant service in ourR evolutionary struggle .

In April , 1 776 , the Association Test was d rawnup in the town of Northwood , and a return made of all thos ewho signed and of those who refused to sign . The name ofJohn Harvey does not occur in either of these lists . He wasprobably in the Army . When he became a member of theNew Hampshire Society of the Cincinnati in 1 784 , he signed asa Lieutenant , having served four years , to the end of the war .But he was a soldier for a longer period . A ccording to theNew Hampshire Muster R olls (imperfect) , he enlisted Feb . 22 ,
1 777 , for three years , as Sergeant, in the l st Company, Capt .James Gray , 3d New Hampshire R egiment ; was Ensign , May 1 ,1 778 , to Jan . , 1 780 , and promoted to be Quarter-master , Sept .1 5 , 1 780, from Ensign . In the new arrangement of officers inthe 1 s t R egiment, Col . Joseph Cilley , he was Ensign , and promoted to be Li eutenant, May 1 2 , 1 78 1 .
In 1 779, and later, he served in Pennsylvania and along theHudson R iver . His R egiment formed a part of Sullivan ’ s ex

He kept a Diary during thiscampaign , from 1 779—1 781 . It is a small book, in excellentpreservation , of some 1 30 pages , and about 1 20 words to apage . The writing is plain , and the language used is good, though the Spelling, of course , is not always correct . Herecords that he left Northwood March 7 , 1 779, and marched 1 5miles to Epping . It has two well-drawn plans of battles . Atthe end he gives the record of his own family , the date of thebirth and death of his father , and the date of birth of hismother
,without giving her maiden name , and the month only
of her death . This Diary he gave to Joseph Quinby , Jr. , sonof widow Quinby, at whose house he was then living, Jan . ,

At the close of the War of the R evolution , the officers ofthe Continental Army, at Newburgh—on—the-Hudson , May 1 3 ,1 783 , formed a Society to be called the Cincinnati , to perpetuate the memory of the struggle , and to promote mutualfriendships and acts of beneficence among its members andtheir posterity . For convenience the Society was divided intothirteen S tate Societies . Gen . Washington was the first President-General . A Society of the French officers was also organiz ed July 4 , 1 784 , under the presidency of Count d ’
E staing,
who was guillotined April 28 , 1 794 , — the first and only President of the Society in France . It included among its membersmany illustrious nobles and military officers . Louis XV I , bydecree in council , permitted them to wear the Order. No otherforeign Order, except that of the Golden Fleece , was allowedto be worn in France . The institution was formally sanctionedby Louis XV I at Versailles , Dec . 1 8 , 1 783 , with the head ofthe Government as patron of the Order. It became dormantand the members were dispersed by the outbreak of the R evol u tion in 1 792 . (See The Order of the C 1nc1nnati in France ,

by Asa Bird Gardiner,The New Hampshire Society of the Cincinnati was organized
at Exeter,Nov . 1 8 , 1 783 . The original members were twenty
seven, whose names were subscribed on that occasion , and at a
subsequent meeting, Feb. 4 , 1 784 . Lieut. John Harvey subscribed in 1 784 . Owing to a lack of interest in creatingnew members
,many of the original ones having di ed or re

work of resuscitation was begun , and the Society is now in av ery 'ourishing condition . It was chie'y owing to the actionof the New Hampshire Society in 1 784 , in opposing the p roposed amendment to the Constitution abolishing the rule ofhereditary succession , that the Order was preserved . Nov . 1 ,
1 902 , the Society purchased the “ Gilman House ,” a fine old
Colonial building, as a permanent headquarters , and here itsmeetings are held every Fourth of July and on other occasions .The house was built by Nathani el Ladd in 1 721 , and was theresidence , during the R evolution , of Col . Nicholas Gilman ,Treasurer of New Hampshire from 1 775 to 1 783 .
After serving so long in the war, it is no wonder that manyof these men had become incapacitated for hard farm labor.Large arrearages were also due them from the Government
,
which it was promised should be paid them with interest assoon as the state of the finances allowed . Many with brokenfortunes and health could not wait, and their claims and ce rtificates were sold to sharpers for what they could get, often amere fraction of what was due t hem .
John Harvey owned many farms , had a good house , and wasan innholder, but he desired a better dwelling ; so he erectedthe house, afterwards the residence of his s on Judge JohnHarvey till 1 820 , when he built a new house for himself
,now
a hotel , the “ Harvey House .
” It commanded a fine view ofHarvey pond
,or lake , as it is now called , and here his former
companions in arms were always welcome to a generous hos
pital ity . His new home was so much superi or to most otherdwellings that it caused general comment . His hospitali tywas such that he went beyond his means , and he became badlyinvolved in debt . He began selling his property . In 1 790 hesold John B l ydenbu rgh , of Durham , 1 68 acres and buildings ,being the whole of lot No . 20 , and 50 acres of lot 1 9, south ofthe pond .
