COIL SCHOOL FOR THE ARTSThe building serves a dual purpose—it provides state-of-the-art spaces for music instruction and brings the community downtown to enjoy evening performances.
The project moves the musical arts out of campus and puts them on display, leveraging the synergies between higher education and the urban environment.
INTRODUCTION / HIGHER EDUCATION AS AN URBAN CATALYST
C18-010-CC
The Coil School for the Arts is one of four buildings that make up the Centennial Plaza, an urban arts and culture hub that opened in 2016 to celebrate Riverside City College’s 100th-Year Anniversary.

As a stand-alone building away from campus amenities, the project offers students and faculty a variety of indoor and outdoor break spaces for them to decompress and socialize. These spaces were programmed and budgeted from the beginning of the design process.

The material selection for the elevation facing the community was inspired by the craftsmanship of music instruments. The pattern on the wood paneling takes cues from the musical notation on sheet music and incorporates slotted windows on the second floor.

EXTERIOR VIEW / MUSIC AS INSPIRATION
“The new concert hall is a true sonic gem. I had the pleasure of playing there recently and found it to be one of the most warm and responsive halls I have ever played in. Not only is it great for the performer, it will add great depth to the development of young musicians looking to build their own sound.”

RESONANCE CHAMBER
A latticework of lights was used to define the space edges. This cost-effective solution allows the passage of sound into the resonance chambers while creating a dynamic atmosphere.

The concert hall was designed as a musical instrument, using the concept of a resonance chamber. This tunable acoustics strategy gives the hall maximum flexibility for instruction and performances, covering each music genre in the curriculum.

A shaded courtyard was programmed early in the design process to provide an exterior landscaped space for students to use between classes. The intimate space was sheltered from the street to minimize noise interference and to provide a place for practice and small group informal concerts.

TrellisThe trellis design limits direct sunlight during the warm summer months and admits direct sunlight during the cooler season.
Courtyard daylightingBrings natural light into open com-mon spaces, minimizing the use of artificial lighting.

The design team took advantage of the larger second floor program to create a deep overhang over the entry. The hovering mass protects the ground level glass from the intense desert sun while offering the community a covered space before and after performances. The angled and serrated facade form is derived from the acoustical premise of avoiding parallel walls within the second floor music labs.
