Hello, my name is Cassandra, and I am here to teach you about something called Cognitive Restructuring. Really it has many other names, but the basis for it is from Cognitive Therapy. The goal of cognitive therapy is to help a person learn to recognize negative thought patterns, evaluate them for their validity or usefulness, and replace them with healthier ways of thinking. By Identifying negative thought patterns and by using thought replacement techniques, one can promote better mental health and a better sense of well-being. When a person can change the way he or she thinks, then that person can feel and act better even if the surrounding situation does not change. See the next slide for the questionnaire.

What was noticed after questionnaire
What did you notice after you filled out the questionnaire? Did you find that you often respond in a manner that is not productive? Did you notice that sometimes you make assumptions about a situation before you know all the facts? The next section we complete will help you sort through some of that. I will show you an example of what is called the Cognitive Restructuring Worksheet, which you will use for the remainder of the course.

Filtering
Here is one list of what dysfunctional or irrational thoughts show up in the head. Let’s read through a few before we view an example of how this might work for someone: 1. Filtering. We take the negative details and magnify them while filtering out all positive aspects of a situation. For instance, a person may pick out a single, unpleasant detail and dwell on it exclusively so that their vision of reality becomes darkened or distorted.

Jumping to Conclusions
Jumping to Conclusions. Without individuals saying so, we know what they are feeling and why they act the way they do. In particular, we are able to determine how people are feeling toward us. For example, a person may conclude that someone is reacting negatively toward them and don’t actually bother to find out if they are correct. Another example is a person may anticipate that things will turn out badly, and will feel convinced that their prediction is already an established fact.Ok, now with those in mind, let’s watch an example of how these distortions might play out:

Ok, now let’s look at the sheet with the thoughts and how it works: We are going to focus on
the pirate since he was the one who “owned the problem”
As you look at the left-hand side of the worksheet you will see the Situation( He did not hear
from his girlfriend). The mood was angry and sad. What do you think his Automatic
Thoughts and Images would have been? Do you see how he has used Filtering and
Jumping to Conclusions? Here might be some of you responses: (It isn’t fair that she does
not call me. She should know I need to hear from her. How dare her treat me this way. He
may have an image that she is with someone else.
