Handicrafts of Bengal embody our rich heritage of aesthetics,creativityandartistry.Thecraft sectorprovides lowcost,greenlivelihoodopportunitiestomorethan5.5lakhmenandwomen.Thesectorrepresentseconomiclifelineofthevulnerablesectionsofthesociety,withwomenaccountingforaround50%ofthecraftspersons and a significant number belonging to the scheduledcastes,tribesandreligiousminorities.Intoday'sglobalisedworld,thegrowingretailindustry,fashionandluxurymarkets,demandforgreenproduction,potentialfore-commercehavecreatednewopportunities for developing a vibrant craft economy therebyproviding increased income opportunities to the craftcommunities like the Patuas, potters, weavers, wood carvers,Dokramakersetc.Besidesitshighpotentialforemployment,thecraftsectoriseconomicallyimportantfromthepointoflowcapitalinvestment, high ratio of value addition, and high potential forexport and foreign exchange earnings for the country. TheGovernmentofWestBengalthusaimstounleashthepotentialofthe sector in terms of employment, enterprises, export andgrowth.
