FrançaisHello Montréal! Je m’appelle Nick et, cela me fait plaisir de vous tenir au courant de ma vie d’enseignant d’anglais expatrié, à Nagoya au Japon. J’écris ceci pendant la première se-maine d’avril et les cerisiers sont en fleurs, il y a aussi plusieurs festivités Hanami. C’est fantastique à voir!

L’article de ce mois servira de guide à ceux qui veulent trouver du travail en tant qu’enseignant ESL au Japon. Ces jours-ci c’est un peu plus difficile d’y trouver du travail mais, ne vous découragez pas! Pour ceux d’entre vous qui ont une passion pour la culture japonaise et un intérêt pour l’enseignement vous pouvez quand même trouver un emploi stimulant et bien rémunéré.

Étant donné que la demande au Japon est plus basse, les pré-requis sont plus sérrés. Bien qu’il y ait des exceptions à la règle -si vous êtes chanceux- préparé vous à avoir besoin de:

1. Un diplôme universitaire (pas besoin d’être en enseignement).

2. Une certification quelconque de type TESOL. Faites attention aux certificats sur in-ternet qui ne prennent que quelques heures à remplir! Ils sont souvent très chers et sont sans importance pour votre CV. Il y a beau-coup de choix donc renseignez-vous au préal-able. Je vous conseille le Cambridge CELTA. Il est dispendieux et intensif mais est très en demande.

Donc, où travaillerez-vous?

Eikaiwa : Une école anglaise privée de con-versation. C’est une des plus grandes écoles qui engage le plus d’étrangers. Par exemple : NOVA, ECC, Berlitz.alt: Assitant Language Teacher. Vous tra-vaillerez dans une école publique et aiderez les enseignants durant les cours.Juku: "Cram schools", auxquelles les élèves vont afin de rattraper du temps perdu ou étud-ier pour un examen d’entrée.

Trouvons du travail! Il existe plusieurs res-sources sur internet pour ceux qui cherchent du travail au Japon.

EnglishBonjour Montréal! My name is Nick and I'm happy to bring you news on life as an expat English instructor in Nagoya, Japan. As I write this in the first week of April, the cherry-blossoms are in full bloom and many Hanami festivities are underway. It's a stunning sight to see!

This month's article will serve as a starting guide for people interested in finding work teaching ESL in Japan. Finding work in Japan can be a little tougher these days, but don't let that deter you! Those of you with a passion for Japanese culture and an interest in teaching can still find rewarding and well-paying work.

Firstly, because Japan's demand is a bit lower, the requirements are a little stricter. And while there are always exceptions to the rule if you're lucky, you should assume that you will need:

1. A University Undergraduate degree (not necessarily related to teaching.)

2. Some type of TESOL certification. Please be careful of online certificates that only take a few hours to complete! They are often very expensive and carry little weight on your CV. There are many options out there so please do some reading-up before you choose. I recommend the Cambridge CELTA. It is expensive and intensive, but also one of the more sought-after ones.

So, where will you be working?

Eikaiwa: A private English conversation school. These are the biggest schools which also hire the most people from abroad. Ex-amples are NOVA, ECC, Berlitz.alt: "Assistant Language Teacher". You will work in a public school and generally assist the school teacher during classes.

Juku: "Cram schools." in which mostly kids attend to make up lost time or to study for a particular entrance exam.

Let's find some jobs! There are many re-sources available online for people looking to work in Japan.

These should provide some good lift-off points for your search. Don't be discouraged if many listings require you to already have a work visa. This was an often frustrating thing to deal with but I just kept at it, sending CV's whenever I could.

May – Just for kids?

５月ー子供の為だけの月？

FrançaisÀ quand remonte votre dernier vol de cerf-volant? Moi non plus je ne m'en rappelle pas, le souvenir remont-ant au plus profond de l'enfance. Pourtant, au Japon, c'est l'objet d'un festival qui se tient au mois de mai. Alors qu'à Montréal nous célébrons la fin certaine de l'hiver et les pre-miers bourgeons, les japonais, qui ont entamé leur printemps depuis longtemps, célèbrent la naissance des garçons: hatsudako.

Ceux d'entre vous qui connaissent déjà la culture japonaise sauront que, le 5 mai, le ciel est rempli de koinobori(banderoles à l'image de carpe). Cette ancienne tradition qui remonte au 16e siècle est une forme de prière pour la santé des garçons; La carpe – connue pour remonter le courant- est un symbole de puis-sance. Malgré que ce mariage entre ciel et eau soit sujet à émerveille-ment, c'est plutôt Takoage Gassen que je voudrais vous faire découvrir.

Takoage Gassen -ou bataille des cerf-volant- se tient sur les dunes de Na-katajima (l'une des trois plus grandes dunes au Japon) à Shizuoka lors du festival Hamamatsu. Plus d'une centaine de ces objets fantastiques dominent la mer Enshunada, menés par leurs combattants qui cherchent à “couper” leurs fils (la corde, pas les garçons!). Ces derniers sont tissés avec du chanvre et, en les friction-nant, ils se cassent. Tombent alors des géants colorés – certains cerf-volants peuvent mesurer 3.5x3.5 mè-tres- sur le sable blanc.

J'espère vous donner le goût de par-ticiper -en habits traditionnels- ce 3 au 5 mai 2013 et de vous émerveiller devant ces impressionnants et fan-tastiques objets. Ce genre de festival, il me semble, ne peut qu'exister au Japon! Je cherche à un événement similaire mais, en vain, le mois de mai c'est pour les mères. N’est-ce pasune

jolie coutume, pour laquelle je ne trouve aucun équivalent au Canada, que de célébrer les naissances?

最後にいつ凧揚げをしたか覚えてますか？私自身は、古い記憶なので思い出せません。けれど５月に催されるイベントではこの凧揚げが話題の中心になります。モントリオールでは冬が終わり、芽吹きを喜んでいる中、既に春が到来している日本では、男の子の誕生を祝う初凧があります。

日本の文化を既にご存知の皆さんは、５月５日に鯉のぼりが空を埋め尽くす事をご存じだと思います。この古い風習は１６世紀に遡り、男の子の健康を願う事からきています。鯉は流水を遡って泳ぐため、力強いことへの象徴になっています。鯉のぼりという、空と水が交差するのは不思議な話題ではありますが、今日は凧揚げ合戦について紹介します。

凧揚げ合戦は、静岡県の中田島砂丘 （日本で三大砂丘の一つ）で、浜松ま

つりの一環として行われます。遠州灘には100以上もの素晴らしい凧が君臨し、勇士がその凧糸を『断ち切る』よう試みます。凧糸は麻から作られていますが、摩擦で切れるので、色とりどりの凧（凧によっては3.5m四方にも及びます）が白い砂の上に落ちてしまいます。

是非、５月３日から５日に行われるこのイベントに（できれば伝統的な服装で）参加して、印象的で魅惑的な物体に魅了される体験をしてみてください。このような催しは、私の知る限りでは日本でしか存在しません。カナダでも、似たようなイベントがないか考えてみましたが、残念ながら５月は母の日があるのみです。日本のように子供の誕生を祝うイベントがないところが、面白いと思いませんか？

EnglishWhen was the last time you flew a kite? The memory is from a distant childhood and I myself cannot re-member. However, in Japan, it is at the center of festival held in May. Whilst in Montreal we celebrate the certainty that winter has ended and the first buds, the Japanese, for whom spring has already come, celebrate the birth of sons: hatsudako.

Those of you already familiar with the Japanese culture know that, May 5th, the sky is filled with koinobori (carp banners). This ancient tradition has its roots in the 16th century and is a form of prayer for the health of boys; The carp – known for swimming upstream – is a symbol of power. Although the meeting of sky and water is a subject of wonder, I wish to introduce to you Takoage Gassen.

Takoage Gassen – or the battle of kites- is held on the dunes of Nakatajima (one of the three larg-est dunes in Japan) in Shizuoka during the Hamamatsu festival. More than 100 of these fantastic objects dominate the Enshunada Sea, led by their champions who try to “cut” their threads. The latter are woven from hemp and when there is friction they break. Colored giants – some kites can measure up to 3.5x3.5 meters- fall on white sands.

I hope I have motivated you into participating –in traditional garb- this May 3rd to 5th as well as to be amazed by these impressive and fascinating objects. According to me, this type of festival can only exist in Japan! I try and conjure a similar event, but alas, the month of may is for mothers. Is it not in-teresting -Canada not having such a custom- that this type of celebra-tion takes place for births?

私たち夫婦がアフリカ・ケニアのマサイマラへ行くことになったきっかけは、日本のテレビ番組で丘に建つロッジにある「クリフサイドバー」を見たことからです。そのバーは、眼下にマサイマラを見渡せるものでした。そこでビールでも飲みながら野生動物を見てみたいと思い立ちました。

往路はトロントから乗り継ぎ時間も入れると、実に30時間をかけてナイロビまで到着。ナイロビには国際空港とは別に国内線用の Wil-son 空港があり、マサイマラへは Wilson 空港から出発。約１時間のプロペラ機（18人乗り）の空の旅。飛行機が小さいため、一人当たりの荷物は15キロまでと制限されています。そのため我々も、必要最低限の装備で臨みました。

ようやく今回の旅の目的地となったMPATA（ムパタ） SAFARI CLUBに到着。MPATA SAFARI CLUB は、Oloololo (オローロロ)の丘に建つ23部屋だけのロッジです。日系人経営のロッジとして1992年から営業を開始。設計はレイモンド鈴木氏、インテリアデザインは鈴木純朗氏。ゲストサービス担当の日本人スタッフ、紀子さんが常駐しているので言葉の心配もなし。スタッフのほとんどはマサイ族。みんなとてもフレンドリーでした。各ゲストルームは独立したバンガローで、眼下にはマサイマラを見渡せる素晴らしいものでした。スイートルームにはジャグジーが完備されており、お風呂代わりに疲れた体を癒やせます。

その日の午後３時から初めてのサファリへ。料金に含まれているサファリは、１日2回朝夕2時間ずつの計4時間が基本。２日目以降は同乗者の合意があれば、朝夕のサファリをまとめてロングサファリにすることも可能。大自然の中でのお弁当は格別です。

サファリ中は６人乗りの車内の窓と天井はほぼ全開。曇りだと走行中はかなり寒く、十分な防寒対策が必要でした。

National Reserve へ入って、アフリカゾウの群れ、アフリカバッファロー、マサイキリンの大群などが現れ、皆、歓声をあげていました。その後、ライオンのカップルにも遭遇。

一週間のマサイマラ滞在中に「ビッグ５」と呼ばれる動物（ライオン、ヒョウ、アフリカゾウ、アフリカバッファロー、黒サイ）をはじめ、チータの親子、サーバルキャット、絶滅したと思われていた希少種のリカオンなど、実に40種類ほどの動物に出会うことができました。

FrançaisQuand nous avons vu le « Cliffside bar », un bar construit à flanc de colline, dans une émis-sion de télé japonaise, nous avons eu l’idée mon épouse et moi de visiter la réserve nation-ale du Masai Mara (Kenya, Afrique). Depuis ce bar, on domine la réserve et cela nous a donné envie d’admirer des animaux sauvages tout en sirotant des bières. Au départ de Toronto, cela a pris trente heures, temps d’attente inclus, pour rejoindre Nairobi,

la capitale kenyane. Là-bas, l’aéroport qui des-sert l’international et celui qui dessert l’interne étant différent, nous avons changé d’aéroport et sommes partis pour la réserve nationale du Masai Mara depuis l’aéroport Wilson. Cela nous a pris environ une heure pour rejoindre la réserve, à bord d’un petit avion à hélice (18 places). L’avion étant petit, le poids des bagag-es autorisés est limité à 15 kilos par personne. C’est pourquoi nous n’avons pris avec nous que le minimum nécessaire. Nous arrivâmes finalement au lieu qui a dé-clenché notre idée de voyage : le Mpata Sa-fari Club. Cette auberge d’une capacité de 23 chambres est construite sur une colline appelée Oloololo. Gérée par des personnes d’origine japonaise, elle a ouvert ses portes en 1992. L’architecture extérieure est l’œuvre de Raymond Suzuki et la décoration intérieure celle de Sumio Suzuki. Noriko, une Japonaise en charge du service

à la clientèle, était sur place de manière per-manente et nous n’avions pas à nous inquiéter de la problématique de la langue. Le reste du personnel était pour la plupart composé de membres de la tribu Masai. Tous étaient très sympathiques. Chaque chambre est en fait un bungalow indépendant qui surplombe le mag-nifique paysage de la réserve Masai Mara. Les suites sont équipées d’un jacuzzi dans lequel on peut reposer son corps fatigué. Nous partîmes pour notre premier safari à 15h le jour même. Le prix comprend 4h de safari, deux heures le matin et deux le soir. À partir du deuxième jour, en accord avec les autres passagers de notre véhicule, il est possible de combiner ces 4h en un long safari. C’est une expérience incroyable que de pouvoir déjeuner en pleine nature. Durant le safari, le véhicule, qui peut contenir jusqu’à six passagers, était presque complète-ment ouvert (toit et vitres). Par temps couvert, il

faisait passablement froid durant le parcours, et des vêtements chauds étaient requis.Après être entrés dans la réserve, nous avons pu voir un troupeau d’éléphants d’Afrique, des buffles d’Afrique, un grand troupeau de girafes Masai, et nous avons tous poussé des cris de joie. Par la suite, nous sommes également tom-bés sur un couple de lions. Durant notre séjour d’une semaine dans la réserve nationale du Masai Mara, nous avons eu la chance de voir une quarantaine d’espèces animales, à commencer par ce qu’on appelle les « Cinq grands », à savoir le lion, le léop-ard, l’éléphant d’Afrique, le buffle d’Afrique et le rhinocéros noir. Nous avons également pu voir des guépards avec leurs petits, des chats servals, mais aussi quelques rares lycaons, es-pèce en danger qui a déjà failli disparaître.

As we saw the possibilities offered by this cliff side bar, located in a lodge built on a hill, while watching a Japanese TV program; we, as a couple, decided to visit Maasai Mara. From the bar, one can admire Maasai Mara from an incomparable vantage point. We then got an idea to watch wild animals while drinking beers there.

It actually took 30 hours, including transit, to reach Nairobi from Toronto. We then flew to Maasai Mara from Wilson Airport; the airport managing the domestic flights, which is apart from the international airport. We then trav-elled for one hour by air in a propeller plane (capacity of 18 people). Since the aircraft was small, the maximum luggage allowance was limited to 15 kg per person. Therefore, we took with us only the bare minimum.

We then finally arrived at the Mpata Safari Club, which is what initially motivated us to embark on this trip. Mpata Safari Club is a lodge offering 23 rooms perched on the

Oloololo hill. Japanese descendants have been running the lodge since 1992, which was created by Raymond Suzuki and Sumio Suzuki, an interior designer.Language was not a concern since Noriko-san, a Japanese staff member in charge of guest service, was permanently sta-tioned there. Most of the staff was Maasai. Everybody was very friendly. Each guest room consisted of an independent bungalow overlooking Maasai Mara. It was wonderful! It would be wise to mention that a Jacuzzi completed the equipment of the suite, which comes in handy to soothe your tired body; as one could expect from the virtues offered by soaking in a bath.

We went on an actual safari for the first time at 3 in the afternoon that day. Basically, the fee includes a total of 4 hours of safari - 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening - per day. Starting from day 2, upon a consensus of all the participating parties, it is possible to combine the morning safari and the evening safari into one long daily outing. It is a very special experience to enjoy lunch

while being so close to Mother Nature.

During a safari, the windows and the roof of a car that can welcome up to 6 people are opened almost completely. When it was cloudy, it was very cold, and I had to find a good solution for protecting myself from the cold while traveling.

After entering the National Reserve, every-body shouted as they were overwhelmed with joy when as a memory of African elephants, an obstinacy of African buffalos and a tower of Maasai giraffes appeared; amongst other animals. We then also en-countered a pride of lions.During the one week of our stay in Maasai Mara, we would in fact come across approxi-mately 40 species of animals; from the so called “Big 5” of the African animal kingdom (lion, leopard, African elephant, African buf-falo and black rhinoceros); to cheetahs and their cubs, several felines and even a few members of the biological family known as lycaon pictus – a rare species of canine that came close to extinction.

Next Music from TOKYOは、今回で5回目を迎えるミュージックイベント。日本のミュージック・シーンをリードする多彩なバンドを招聘し、カナダ全土にジャパニーズ・ミュージックブームを巻き起こしたイベントでもあります。

今回は日本国内でも話題沸騰のmouse on the keys、チーナ、きのこ帝国、ハラフロムヘルの4バンドを迎え、トロント・モントリオール・バンクーバーの3都市で公演予定です。5月20日のモントリオール公演を前に、主宰者Steven Tanakaさんに意気込みを語って頂きました。

◎ Next Music from TOKYOを開催することになったきっかけについて、教えてください。

日本のインディーズミュージックは、世界中に数ある音楽の中でも、一番クリエイティブでバラエティに富んでいます！僕自身、最初は日本の音楽に対してステレオタイプの印象を抱いていましたが、実際に聞いてみると、その素晴らしさに感動しました。僕が感じた素晴らしさを、カナダ人に伝えたい…そう純粋に思ったことが、イベントを始めた動機です。

◎ 素晴らしい情熱ですね！実際にイベントを今まで行ってきた感触はいかがですか？また、客層は？

客層について言えば、現在８割がカナダ人、2割が日

本人といった所です。カナダ人のお客様は、日本語は分からない方がほとんどですが、彼らの豊かな感情表現をしっかりと受け止め、楽しんでいますよ。

◎ この3都市を開催地に選んだ理由をお聞かせ下さい。

トロントとバンクーバーは日本人人口が非常に多い場所です。カナダ人にアピールできると同時に、日本人に関しては、このイベントを通じてバンドのファンになっていただければ、滞在中だけでなく、帰国した後も引き続き応援できるというメリットがあります。

モントリオールは、これらの二都市に比べると日本人人口が少ないですが、音楽が盛んな場所ですので、純粋に彼らの音楽性を楽しんで頂けるのではないでしょうか。

◎ 過去4回のツアーを通じ、日本人アーティストの側にはどのような化学変化がありましたか？

さまざまな化学変化がありました！実は彼らは音楽性がそれぞれ異なりますし、普段は個々に活動しているので、日本国内ではお互い共演したことが無いバンド同士がほとんどだったのです。しかし、このツアーを通じて交流が始まり、今では一緒にライブをするなど、日本の音楽シーンでも新たな変化が生まれて来ています。

ジャパニーズ・バンドへの愛を熱い語り口で語ってくれたStevenさん。インタビューの中で最も驚いたことは、彼がなんとこのイベントを自腹で開催しているということ！スポンサーは付いておらず、医師という仕事で得た収入を投じ、自らこの素晴らしいアーティスト達を招聘し、ツアーを行っているのです。彼の情熱は、カナダの音楽シーンのみならず、日本の音楽シーンに新たな１ページを切り開くこととなるでしょう。

Cette année marquera la cinquième édition de « Next Music from TOKYO », un rendez-vous avec la musique japonaise d'aujourd'hui. Les unités musicales les plus panachées du Japon sont invitées à ce show qui créé un engouement pour les rythmes nippons à travers le Canada.

Pour cette édition qui aura lieu à Vancouver, To-ronto et Montréal, quatre groupes vont jouer live : mouse on the keys, qui fait grand bruit au Japon dernièrement, Chi-na, Kinoko Teikoku et Hara from Hell. Avant le grand soir du 20 mai, l'organisateur et fondateur de l'événement, Steven Tanaka, a eu la gentillesse de nous parler de sa détermination pour ce projet.

◎ À propos de « next music from to-kyo » qui va commencer très bientôt, peux-tu nous en dire plus long?

De tous les genres de musique dans le monde, la musique indie du Japon est la plus créative et la plus riche en diversité! Au début j'étais pris dans des préjugés contre la musique japonaise, mais après l'avoir vraiment écouter, j'ai ressenti toute son originalité. Et je voulais exprimer mes impres-sions à mes amis canadiens... C'est donc de ce sentiment sans arrières-pensées que m'est venu la motivation de créer ce show.

◎ tu dois être vraiment passionné! À propos des spectacles passés, quelles sont tes impressions? comment as-tu trouvé la foule?

80% de la foule est canadienne et 20%, japonaise. La plupart des Canadiens qui viennent ne com-prennent pas le japonais, mais en regardant leur visage durant le show, on voit qu'ils s'amusent bien.

◎ peux-tu nous dire pourquoi tu as choisi ces trois villes pour ce show?

Toronto et Vancouver sont des villes avec une forte densité de résidents d'origine japonaise: pendant que les Canadiens sont amenés à y dé-couvrir quelque chose de nouveau au show, ces résidents deviendront peut-être des nouveaux fans qui continueront à aimer les groupes à leur retour au Japon, pas seulement durant leur séjour au Canada.

Quant à Montréal, bien qu'il y ait beaucoup moins de Japonais, n'est-ce pas une métropole où la scène musicale est dynamique et où les Mon-tréalais, avec leur amour de la musique, pourront pleinement apprécier le show?

◎ en tournée avec les unités musi-cales les quatre années précédentes, as-tu remarqué de la symbiose entre les musiciens?

Oui! En vérité, les musiciens ont des goûts musi-caux différents et ils font leur propre affaire dans leur vie quotidienne, donc presque tous les groupes n'ont jamais jouer live ensemble au Japon, mais en voyageant en tournée, les échanges commencent et les liens se tissent. Maintenant, certains d'entre eux continuent à faire des shows ensemble, et la scène musicale japonaise en reçoit de nouvelles impulsions pour le changement.

Voilà ce que Steven-san nous a dit avec zèle sur l’enthousiasme qu'il porte à ces unités musicales du Japon. Ce qui nous a le plus étonné durant l'entrevue, c'est qu'il paie lui-même tous les frais pour la tenue de ce show! N'étant rattaché à aucun commanditaire, il emploie le salaire qu'il récolte en tant que médecin pour inviter personnellement ces artistes extraordinaires et partir en tournée avec eux. L'impact de sa passion concerne moins la scène musicale canadienne que celle japonaise, dont « Next Music from Tokyo » réécrit l'histoire.

Next Music from Tokyo is a music event which introduces Tokyo's independent and underground music scene - that means, the most edgy , high energy and powerful music scene - to Canada! They choose the line-up of hot and fresh Japa-nese bands and curate this event. And of course...Canadian audience totally LOVE that, because of their amazing music and passion.

In May 2013 , they will do their 5th tour in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, with amazing Japanese artists such as mouse on the keys, KINOKO TEIKOKU, CHI-NA, HARA FROM HELL. I inter-viewed with Steven Tanaka, the founder of this exciting event.

◎ steven, what motivates you to do next music From tokyo?

To be honest, growing up in Canada I had a stereotyped image of Japanese music. However, when I travelled to Japan and explored the live music scene, I was surprised at the creativity and variety -

especially the independent music scene - and was deeply touched. Compared to the music in other countries, there is more power and originality. I wanted to express to Canadians how much I was impressed by Japanese music. This feeling motivated me to do Next Music From Tokyo.

◎ that sounds great , and i am totally interested in it. How do you feel about past events ? what was the audience like?

So far I think the audience loves the music, passion and energy of the Japanese bands. The majority of our audience (80%) is Cana-dian, and the rest of the audience is Japanese. Even if they cannot understand the Japanese language, they have thoroughly enjoyed the event!

◎ why did you choose these 3 cities (toronto, mon-treal, vancouver) to bring this event?

Toronto and Vancouver have large Japanese communities so we can appeal to not only Canadians but also to Japanese people currently residing in or visiting Canada. This can be beneficial to the bands if the Japanese audience remain fans when they return to Japan. Compared to Toronto and Vancouver, the Japanese

population in Montreal is smaller; however, Montreal is famous for it’s great music scene and I think this type of event is something Montrealers can really appreciate and enjoy.

◎ Did you find any chemistry among Japanese art-ists through the past tours?

YES! On each tour there has been great chemistry between bands. In Japan, prior to the tour many of the bands were part of different scenes and had never played with each other before. But through this tour, they established lasting friendships. And now many of the bands collaborate, do live shows together - and clearly show development of a positive chemistry...

Through the interview, I was deeply touched by Steven's love for Japanese Music. Can you imagine that this tour is run by ONLY HIMSELF? He covers all the cost, accommodation, venue fee...etc, etc, EVERYTHING, without sponsors. He works hard as a doctor, to make it happen. Nobody can do that without the true love and pas-sion. And I believe, only the true love and passion make the miracle and chemistry. His passion makes the chemistry in Canadian and Japanese Music scene, and in your heart...Mark my words!

先月号ではフランスへのホームシックに役立つ「妙薬」を御紹介したBon Appétit! 今月は、モントリオールにいながらにして、フランスのお隣、ベルギーの食文化に出会えるお店をご紹介。ベルギーといえば、チョコレートにビール、そしてなんといってもワッフルが有名ですが、本場ベルギーのワッフルを忠実に再現したお店を発見！

巨大ワッフルがそのまま看板になっていて、ひときわ目をひくお店、Engaufrez-vous。内装は赤のテーマカラーを中心に、メリーゴーランドがデッサンされていたり、アンティークな小物があったりと、温かみが感じられます。

ワッフル専門店だけあって、そのメニューは種類豊富。基本となるのはブリュッセル風とリエージュ風。ブリュッセル風は大きめの長方形、甘さ控えめの軽い口当たりでサクサクしています。粉砂糖やジャム、チョコレートやメープルシロップから選べます。リエージュ風はやや小ぶりで丸い形。もっちりした生地で食べ応えがあります。

また、ワッフルの中に具を入れこむファルシは、香ばしいワッフルと、中から飛び出す具のハーモニーを楽しめるお勧めの品。オーナーシェフ、Jean Charles Stattnerさんの今日のお勧めファルシは、洋梨とルバーブジャムにアーモンドスライス。洋梨のシャリシャリとした食感、ルバーブの甘酸っぱさ、アーモンドの香ばしさが焼きたてワッフルに包まれて届き、大満足の一品。

ファルシには甘いデザート風だけでなく食事代わりになるサレ（塩味）もあります。このファルシ・サレはEngaufrez-vousが独自に開発したメニュー。イタリア風、サヴォワ風、カタルーニャ風、象牙海岸風など、世界各地の地名を冠したメニューが多く、通い詰めて違うものを頼んでもなかなか追いつきません！

単品でも、ランチやブランチとして飲み物やフルーツとセットで頼んでもOK。ベルギー体験があってもなくても、ワッフルの美味しさに必ずや感激します！Engaufrez-vousにEngouffrez-vous（駆け込んで）！À table…

FrançaisDans l’édition du mois dernier, Bon Appétit vous a introduit une recette-remède pour ceux qui la France leur manque! Ce mois-ci, on vous montrera un endroit où vous pouvez rencon-trer la culture culinaire du voisin de la France, la Belgique, sans

avoir à quitter Montréal. La Belgique est bien connue pour ses chocolats, sa bière et, surtout, pour ses gaufres. On a trouvé une boulangerie qui reproduit des gaufres belges réelles.La pancarte de gaufre géante et attrayante fait qu’Engaufrez-vous saute aux yeux. L’intérieur est rouge, décoré avec des dessins de carrousel et de petites antiquités qui créent une atmosphère chaleureuse pour les clients.

Comme c'est une boulangerie spécialisée en gaufres, il y a, évidemment, une très grande variété de choix au menu. Les styles de base sont Bruxelles et Liège. Le style Bruxelles est une gaufre assez large et rectangulaire un peu sucré, légère et croustillante. Quant aux garnitures, vous pouvez choisir un glaçage sucré, de la confiture, du chocolat ou du sirop d'érable. Celle de Liège est un peu plus petite, ronde et a une texture pâteuse qui la rend assez consistante.

Vous avez également la farcie, une gaufre remplie de friandises au lieu de garnitures. Celle-çi est très recommandée; elle révèle l'harmonie entre la gaufre parfumée et la garniture qui

déborde. La gaufre farcie d'aujourd'hui, suggérée par le chef et propriétaire Jean-Charles Stattner, est rempli de poire, de confiture de rhubarbe et des tranches d'amande. La texture croustillante de la poire, le goût aigre et sucré de la rhubarbe et le parfum de l'amande sont emballés à l'intérieur de la gaufre. Ça fait du bien!

Il y a non seulement les farcies sucrées, mais aussi les salées qui sont géniales pour un repas. Cette farcie salée est unique et créée par Engaufrez-vous. Plusieurs de ces gaufres tirent leurs noms de places autour du monde; vous pouvez essayer l'Italienne, le Savoyarde, le Catalane et l'Ivoirienne. Il y en a tellement qu'il est difficile de toutes les goûter même si vous y allez fréquemment et que vous en commandez une différente à chaque fois.

Vous pouvez commander une gaufre seule ou l'accompagnée d'une boisson ou une combinaison de fruits. Leur goût superbe vous laissera une impression durable, que vous ayez visité la Belgique ou non. Engouffrez-vous! Engaufrez-vous!

In last month's issue, Bon Appétit introduced a “remedy reci-pe” for those who miss France! This month, we are featuring a shop where you can meet the food culture of France's neighbour, Belgium, without having to leave Montreal. Bel-gium is known for chocolate, beer, and, above all, waffles. We found a shop that is reproducing real Belgian waffles.

The eye-catching giant waffle sign makes Engaufrez-vous waffle shop stand out. The red coloured interior, decorated with drawings of a merry-go-round and small antique articles, brings a sense of warmth to patrons.

Just as you might expect of a shop that specializes in waf-fles, there is a lot to choose from on the menu. The basic styles are Brussels and Liege. Brussels style is a rather large and rectangular shaped waffle that is moderately sweet, light, and crispy. For toppings, you can choose from icing sugar, jam, chocolate, or maple syrup. Liege style is a bit smaller, round, and has a doughy texture that makes it quite filling.

Then there is the farcie, a waffle that is filled with goodies instead of toppings. This item is highly recommended; it re-veals a harmony between the fragrant waffle and the fillings that are popping out of it. Today's farcie, recommended by the owner and chef Jean-Charles Stattner, is filled with pear, rhubarb jam, and almond slices. The crispy texture of the pear, sour-sweetness of the rhubarb, and almond fragrance are wrapped together in the waffle. It really hits the spot.

There are not only sweet farcies, but also salées (salty ones), which are great as a meal. This farcie salée is uniquely developed by Engaufrez-vous. A lot of these waffles get their names from places around the world; you can try Italian, Savoyard, Catalonian, and Ivorian style. There are so many that it is hard to catch up even if you go there repeatedly and order different things each time.

You can order just a single item, or you can choose to get your waffle with a drink or with a combination of fruits. The great taste of these waffles will make an impression on you whether you’ve been to Belgium or not. Engouffrez-vous! (dig in) Engaufrez-vous! (let's eat)

3月16日から22日までの日程で、茨城県立日立第二高等学校、生徒24名が、「アジア大洋州地域及び北米地域との青少年交流（キズナ強化プロジェクト）」の派遣団としてモントリオール・ケベックを表敬訪問した。

このプロジェクトは、2011年3月11日に発生した東日本大震災で日本が受けた被害と再生に関する、諸外国の正確な理解増進を目的として、日本政府により進められている事業であり、被災地の現状に関する正しい認識や、防災知識などについて幅広く共有するとともに、日本の力強い復興の姿と、日本各地の魅力を紹介することで、日本への風評払拭の一助を派遣の目的としている。

16日にモントリオール入りした一行は、ケベック州の文化や歴史を学びながら、精力的に震災に対する理解と復興の現状を伝え、地元の人たちとの親交を深めた。

ケベック・シティ郊外にあるRochebelle高校を訪問して昼食をともにしたり、モントリオール市内にある、Trafalgar女子学院を訪問し震災に関する意見交換の場や同校生徒宅へホームスティの機会を得た。Trafalgar女子学院の生徒達も、今年1月に同プログラムにより、日本の被災地等を訪問しており、震災に対する関心も高く、活発な意見交換が行われた。また、ロンググイユ市にあるCollège Français 高校にて初級フランス語講座、スポーツ交流を行った。東日本大震災による被害と復興の様子を紹介するプレゼンテーションをするなどして、今回の震災によって大きく残された課題についても、同年代間で認識を新たにした。

日立第2高校2年生の玉川杏奈（たまがわあんな）さん（17歳）は、 「身内で被災者もいるのですが、あまり詳しい事情を教えてもらえ

ない部分もあります。私自身、今は思いを込めて鶴を折ったりすることしかできませんが、震災や原発について日頃思っていることを自分の言葉で伝えていくことの大切さを感じています。“絆”という言葉が好きになりました。ひと文字なのに、多くの意味を含んでいて、人と関わっていくのに大切なことを教えてくれる言葉だと思います」と話してくれた。

同校をこの春に卒業した海東仁美（かいとうひとみ）さん（18歳）は、「原発を止めるのは難しいことだと思います。なかなか答えがみつからない難しい問題なんですが、私は無くした方がいいと思っています。高校の部活でずっとやっていた茶道で、日本のことをもっと海外の人に知ってもらえる切っ掛けを作れればいいなと思います」と複雑な胸の内も率直に話してくれた。

Du 16 au 24 mars, une délégation de vingt-deux élèves du lycée secondaire d’Hitachi dans la préfecture d'Ibaraki ont rendu une visite de courtoisie à Montréal et à Québec dans le cadre du programme d’échanges des jeunes avec l'Amérique du Nord et la région Asie-Pacifique (Projet de renforcement Kizuna).

Il s'agit d'un projet soutenu par le gouvernement japonais, afin de permettre aux autres pays une compréhension plus précise des dommages et des efforts de reconstruction à la suite du grand tremblement de terre du Japon oriental qui a eu lieu le 11 Mars 2011. Le principal objectif de ce projet est de mieux faire connaître la situation dans les zones touchées et de partager un large éventail d'informations sur la prévention des catastrophes, en même temps qu'introduire des images puissantes de la re-construction du Japon et l'attractivité des différentes régions du pays dans le but espéré d'aider à dissiper les rumeurs au sujet du Japon.

Les élèves de la délégation qui sont arrivées à Montréal le 16 mars ont énergiquement transmis aux gens locaux l'état actuel de la reconstruction et de la compréhension des puissants trem-blements de terre. Ils ont aussi eu l’occasion d’apprendre la cul-ture et l'histoire du Québec. Ils ont interagit ainsi entre eux.

Les élèves ont visité la banlieue de Québec pour déjeuner en-semble avec des élèves de lycée Rochebelle. Aussi lors de la visite de lycée Trafalgar de Montréal, ils ont eu l’occasion d’échanger des opinions sur les tremblements de terre, et de rester dans la famille des élèves de ce lycée. Comme les élèves de Trafalgar ont également visité des régions sinistrées du Japon grâce au même programme en Janvier, elles ont un grand intérêt pour le tremblement de terre, l’échange d’opinions était donc très interactif.

De plus, à l'école secondaire Collège Français de Longueuil, les élèves de la délégation ont reçu un cours d’introduction du français, et ont pratiqué des sports avec des élèves du Collège. Ils ont également présenté les dégâts causés par le grand trem-blement de terre du Japon oriental et un état de reconstruction. Les jeunes ont eu occasion de renouveler la reconnaissance en-tre la même génération sur les grandes questions qui restent par le récent tremblement de terre.

Mlle Anna Tamagawa étudiant en deuxième année de lycée sec-ondaire Hitachi (17 ans) a dit : "Certains membres de ma famille sont des victimes et il y a aussi une partie des circonstances que personne ne me raconte. Tout ce que je peux faire mainten-ant, c’est de plier des grues en leur envoyant mes pensées. Je sens l'importance de continuer à transmettre avec nos propres mots ce que nous pensent tous les jours sur les tremblements de terre et des centrales nucléaires." Elle m'a également dit : "J’aime le mot ‘kizuna (lien)’, ce mot n'est représenté que par un seul caractère(kanji) mais il contient beaucoup de sens et indique l’importance d’interagir avec des gens.

Mlle Hitomi Kaito (18 ans) qui vient d'obtenir son diplôme de lycée ce printemps nous a exprimés ses pensées avec sincérité: "Je pense que c’est difficile d’arrêter la centrale nucléaire, c’est un sujet difficile à traiter. Personnellement, je pense que ce se-rait mieux de ne pas les utiliser dans le futur. Aussi, j'espère que le sado (cérémonie du thé) que je pratiquais beaucoup dans le club de lycée, va créer une occasion de mieux faire connaître le Japon aux gens d'autres pays.

* Dans la tradition qui vient de l'esprit Shenzhen, en Chine, le pliage en papier qui représente un oiseau nommé grues est un symbole de longévité. Au japon, il y a une tradition de plier mille grues en papier et les mettre ensemble en souhaitant longévité, et convalescence aux malades. Aujourd’hui, les gens plient mille grues comme prières pour exaucer un souhait.

24 students from Hitachi Daini High School in Ibaraki Prefec-ture made a courtesy visit to Montreal and Quebec City from March 16 to March 22 as part of “The Youth-Exchange Project with Asia-Oceania and North America (Kizuna Project.)”

The Japanese government is conducting this project with the aim of promoting global understanding of Japan’s damage and recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011. The purpose of sending Japanese high school students to speak about the disaster is to recognize the affected areas’ current conditions, share knowledge about disaster prevention, and help dispel rumours by illustrating Ja-pan's strong reconstruction efforts and as well as the charms of various places throughout the country.

The group arrived in Montreal on the 16th of the month. They deepened friendships with local people by learning about Quebec culture and history, and, in turn, by telling Quebec residents about the 2011 earthquake and the current condi-tions.

They visited Rochebelle Secondary School, located in a suburb of Québec City, and had lunch with the students there. They also visited Trafalgar School for Girls and exchanged opinions about the earthquake. Students of Trafalgar School for Girls were highly interested in talking about the disaster

because they had visited Japan as part of the same project last January. So they had a passionate exchange of opin-ions. Students from Hitachi Daini High School took part in a homestay at the homes of the students of Trafalgar School for Girls. They also visited Collège Français Secondary School in Longueuil, and participated in a Beginner's French course and a sports exchange. They also had a chance to speak about the damage and reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Hitachi Daini High School Junior Anna Tamagawa, 17, told us: “Some of my relatives are earthquake victims, but I am not giv-en any detailed information. The only thing I can do is making origami cranes while my thoughts are with them. But I feel the importance of telling people what I think about the earthquake and nuclear power plants in my own words.” She also said, “I came to like the word “kizuna.” It's a single character, but it contains a variety of meanings, and it teaches us the impor-tance of relating to other people.”

Hitomi Kaito, 18, who graduated from Hitachi Daini High School this spring, told us frankly about her mixed feelings on nuclear power plants: “I think it's difficult to stop nuclear power plants. It's a difficult issue that we can't find an easy answer to. But personally I think it's better to stop them.” She also told us: “I would like to create an opportunity for people overseas to get to know Japan better by introducing sado (Japanese tea ceremony), an extracurricular activity that I participated in when I was at high school.”

an open mind… and heart. 4. Culture, language, people, food, customs—say good-bye to everything familiar while in Japan. But rather than fret about it, delight in the differences!
