SOCIAL CLUB NEWS

This month we sought some feedback from members who attend Friday night

meals about their food experience. In the main there was strong commendation

for the efforts we have put in to provide a variety and quality of food which ap-

pears to be appreciated. As we will no doubt discuss there were valid com-

ments across a variety of perspectives and learning from them will only make the service

better. It is important to be balanced in our reflection and to draw whatever practical sug-

gestions we can in order to keep improving. Still, well done to all who are creating nour-

ishing and enjoyable meals week in, week out!

CHRISTMAS IN JULY. Sunday 29th July, doors and bar open 11.30am.

Lunch will be at 12.30 noon, typical Christmas roast and pudding. Craig Shaw

will be your entertainer. Cost being $10 for members, non members $15. Fly-

ers will be in your boxes soon.

This function is for residents only. Dress for the occasion, make it a great night.

We seem to have been flying at half-mast this month with committee members away or re-

covering. I make special mention of Mary Aitkin who really faced a scare with her health

recently and hope her recovery is well underway. Thanks to those who have ‘held the fort’

in the meantime.

I have had little luck yet with a response from the RSL re a memorial plaque grant applica-

tion, but I will persist nevertheless.

Numbers have been down in the last few weeks, reasons or possible explanations are

many. I think the rhythm of life always works itself out and we just go along as usual.

Everyone makes their own choices and that’s fine. Living with the consequences is always

the upshot.

A big thank you to all the volunteers, who help out on Fridays nights. It’s all appreciated.

CROQUET. The weather has been good so far, although it is cold fir st

thing. We soon discard our jackets and scarves so don’t be put off. Come and

join the fun. Lyn has picked up the game really well and is getting to be quite the

expert. Thanks to Graham for setting up the court for us so if you would like to

come along and have a game, it is all set up ready to go. Once again, mallets are supplied

and there is no cost. Join us on Saturday mornings at 8.30 am.

COBAKI SNOOKER CLUB. Our couples night was another fun night with

38 attendees. We had 12 raffles with many varied winners, including Harry who

again won a bottle of wine. Well done, Harry. Our snooker monthly barbecue

was held on 13th Jun with 26 members attending. Our meal choices were chick-

en and chips, fish and chips, steak, sausage and rissoles coupled with coleslaw, which eve-

ryone enjoyed. Our next members and couples night was on 28th June in the Hall and the

following one will be on 26th July. We expect a big roll up. Our list of food choices will be

on the noticeboard before the event. Kind regards Alan

CANASTA. Not a lot to repor t this month with the cold weather. Our num-

bers are holding up despite some with health issues, on holidays and one moving

away. We wish them well in their new home. Because we play in groups of three,

four or six, the numbers can be arranged so no one misses out on a game. We are always

happy to see new players. They will always be welcomed. Come and join us in the Hall on

Wednesdays at 12.45 pm.

WATER AEROBICS. We will resume our activities in the pool in October

when the weather is warmer. Keep an eye out for our starting date. All residents

are welcomed each weekday morning at 7.00 am. See you in a couple of

LADIES GROUPS with COBAKI TRIPPERS. If you have an hour or so free

on Mondays at 2.00 pm and/or Wednesdays at 10.00 am, do please join us in the

Hall for a cuppa and a natter. It is a great way to meet other ladies in the Village in

a very informal setting. The Wednesday group also go out to lunch on the first

Wednesday of the month. Our next bus trip is being organised for Thursday 2nd August—

and the gentlemen of the Village are also invited to come along. It is a mystery trip heading

South, which should be very enjoyable. Details will be on the noticeboard this month for

those wanting to attend. Jean

SOCIAL GOLF. Another month flies by and here we are into the star t of

winter. June game, a Stableford held at Chinderah on 20th June, was by far

the coldest conditions we have experienced this year. Eleven members braved

the elements to produce some very good scores. Special mention to Dianne

Pepper with 38 points and Wendy Edwards with 37 points. Today’s winner was Garry Par-

ker with 40 points on a countback from Don Carrick. The evening meal was prepared by

Elizabeth Boyd, Wendy Edwards and Sandra Parker. Cheese and biscuits was followed by

spaghetti Bolognese and apple Crumble and ice cream. There were no complaints from the

16 very satisfied members present. The next game will be at Chinderah on Wednesday the

18thJuly. Remember to try to get there half an hour before the 9am hit off.

CRAFT. It is that time again. The time goes so fast. We have had a quite month with a few of our ladies on holidays. It is a good time to be out of the cold. The ladies attending craft have been busy with their own projects, cards and mac-ramé. Craft is in the Hall every Thursday between 1.00 and 3.00 pm. Come along and join in. Jill

TRIVIA. As always, we had fun and no one missed State of Or igin. Kath won

the lucky door prize. She is still here so she didn’t win a fortune with her $5 scrat-chie. Winners for the evening were ‘Team Hotshots” - their first win and they were

over the moon. Why not put your head in the door and see what we get up to? You would be most welcome. We meet next on Wednesday 4th July in the Hall. First Wednesday in the month, watch the noticeboard. Myrna

LIBRARY. PLEASE NOTE—The Library will be closed on Saturday 14th

and Sunday 15th July as the Theatre Group are using it as a dressing room for

the performances. At any other time, please borrow whenever you like and return

your books, magazines, DVDs and jigsaws to the white trolley. We have a large selection of

I was parking my car yesterday when a rather angry traffic warden banged on the win-

dow and shouted, “you can’t park your car there!” I said, “I can, the sign says” fine for

parking”!

INDOOR BOWLS. Hello again! Time to thank Thora and Pam again, our

morning tea ladies, for the great spread they put on for us all every Monday morn-

ing. They do a good job! It really was an even game of bowling a couple of

weeks ago, when the scores of the two teams of brown against black added up as

the same score. Doesn’t happen that close very often! Well done to everyone. We still

have a couple of our regular bowlers not feeling too good. Hope to see you back soon.

COMPUTER CLUB. We meet in the Library on the last Friday of each

month. If you have a question about anything or just feel like a chat, please

EXERCISE. The exercise group has suspended activities for July but will

meet again in the Hall on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.00 am next

COBBA’s SOCIAL LAWN BOWLS CLUB: Hi to all members. Another

month gone already! By the time this edition goes to print we would have been to

Brunswick Heads Bowls Club for breakfast followed by bowls. Always a good

morning! Next trip is to a new club for us, at Ballina RSL on Sunday, July 15th,

leaving the village at 7.30am. Bowls commence at 9.00am. For the non bowlers, a trip

around Ballina has been organised with perhaps a bit of retail therapy or time for a coffee

overlooking the water. Whatever turns up on the morning! Back to the club for lunch of

steak, salad, bread rolls, etc. were looking forward to a good day. Please note, due to the

fact that Cudgen Bowls Club have other commitments on August 19th, we will not be visit-

ing their club as per our list. Hopefully, we will have news on another club for the month

of August shortly. Notices will be mailed to all members with information when another

club has been arranged. Our trip on September 23rd is to Pottsville Bowls Club. Keep

BOOK NOOK

Four of the best selling books in Australia last week were

crime novels. They are becoming more and more popular. It is fun to try to

solve the mystery and the books have an element of satisfaction when justice is delivered at

the end. Look out for these crime series which also follow the private lives of the detec-

tives.

Sue Grafton’s private detective Kinsey Milhone features in her alphabet series, from A is

for Alibi to Y is for Yesterday. Unfortunately she died before finishing Z.

Nicci French has a days series, from Blue Monday to Sunday Morning Coming Down in-

volving psychotherapist Frieda Klein.

Peter James follows his character Detective Roy Grace. All of the books have the word

Dead in the titles.

Lastly, Kathy Reichs has written the Bones series, featuring Dr Temperence Brennan, who

is based on her own life. You may have seen Bones on television.

Beryl Wright would like to make mention of an alternative way to travel to Brisbane.

It is with deep sadness we bring news of the passing of

LYNDON WALLACE house 70.

He passed away on 23rd June 2018, in The Tweed Hospital.

Lyndon was very involved with snooker Club. He added the red wall in the snooker room.

His health had not been good for some time. He was a very likeable man.

Lyndon had been in the village 18 years.

Shirley would like to thank everyone for their kindness, thoughts, cards and visits.

Our condolences to all the family.

GARDENING WITH ROSS.

JULY: Next month, “August”, is our spring here at Cobaki.

Now is the time to look forward to the Spring. The days are getting long-er, bulbs are in the shops now. Providing the bulbs have come from a COLD cli-mate they will flower here. Look for your favourite daffodils. jonquils and oth-

ers, lots of different mixed breeds are available. Find, a very large pot and plant immediate-ly. Bare rooted roses are now in the shops and these too need to be planted immediately. In the vegetable garden, sow bean seed into punnets water only once, then put the punnets in a warm place for them to germinate. Bean seed will rot if the soil is cold and too wet. It is NOT too late to plant a few Potato seed, while the soil is cold.

Start planning your spring garden now. Fertilizer is extremely important, Blood and Bone with Potash added is the best, plus Natural Dolomite Lime helps correct soil prob-lems and a good source of magnesium and calcium that are essential plant nutrients. It can also be used in conjunction with other fertilisers and help in nutrient intake. Features: it is all natural with no added chemicals are corrects soil acidity. We bring you the very sad news f the passing of

LILLIAN DAVIS house 134.

She sadly passed away on 27th June 2018.

Lillian had been in the village 21 years, she was a quiet lady,

but had many friends in the village. Her health had not been good for some time.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Jim would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts at this sad time.

If a cowboy rides into town on a Friday and three days later leaves on a Friday, how does

he do it? The horses name is Friday !!

The McEwen brothers decided that one of their number would go to Ameri-ca and make a fortune coming back to share it with the rest of them. The youngest, Ian, was chosen for this task. Off he went, and he worked hard in America, and earned himself a fortune over a few years, and wired his brothers that he’d be returning with it. When he came back to Scotland he

looked around for his brothers, but could not see anyone who looked familiar. Finally a group of bearded strangers approached. “Ho, Ian, are ye not knowing yer own brothers?’ asked the first one. Then Ian realised his brothers had grown beards. “ Fort heaven sake, laddies, what would Ye be growin’ Them beards for, now?’ he asked. “We had to, lad, ye took the razer wi’ye!”

Walking through China town, a tourist is fascinated with all the Chinese restaurants, shops,

sign and banners. He turns a corner and sees a building with the sign, ‘Hans Olaffsen’s

Laundry’. Hans Olaffsen? He muses. ‘How in hell does that fit in here?’ He walks into the

shop and sees an old Chinese gentleman behind the counter. The tourist asks, “How did

this place get the name like Hans Olaffsen’s Laundry|?’The old man answers, Is name of

owner. Me right here, replies the old man. “You? How did you ever get a name like Hans

Olaffsen? “Is simple,” says the old man. Many many years ago when come to this country,

was stand in line at Documentation Centre. Man in front was big blonde Swede. Lady look

at him and go, What your name?” He says, Hans Olaffsen.” the she look at me and go

“What your name?” I say “Sem Ting.”

VILLAGE DEMENTIA NEWS.

Our recent meeting with Chris Vannucci of Dementia Australia was received very well by

the 12 people who attended, it was agreed at the conclusion that our next meeting would be

held on Tuesday10th July at10am in the village hall for a chat on everything as well as

Dementia. You don’t have to be carer or a sufferer of this terrible disease everyone is very

welcome to come along and see what we are about and trying to achieve
