Because smoking is an addiction,it is not easy to stop. After you’vegiven up cigarettes, you will still
have a strong urge to smoke. Plan aheadNOW for these times, so you’re not defeatedin a moment of weakness. The following tipsmay help:• Keep the phone numbers of supportive
friends and family members handy.• Keep a record of your quitting process.
Track the number of Nicorette piecesyou use each day, and whether you feela craving for cigarettes. In the event that

you slip, immediately stop smoking andresume your quit attempt with theNicorette program.
• Put together an Emergency Kit thatincludes items that will help take yourmind off occasional urges to smoke.Include cinnamon gum or lemon dropsto suck on, a relaxing cassette tape, andsomething for your hands to play with, like a smooth rock, rubber band, orsmall metal balls.
• Set aside some small rewards, like a newmagazine or a gift certificate from yourfavorite store, which you’ll “give” your-self after passing difficult hurdles.
• Think now about the times when youmost often want a cigarette, and then planwhat else you might do instead of smok-ing. For instance, you might plan to takeyour coffee break in a new location, ortake a walk right after dinner, so you won’tbe tempted to smoke.

Nicorette’s sugar-freechewing pieces pro-vide nicotine to yoursystem – they work as
a temporary aid to help you quit smokingby reducing nicotine withdrawal symptoms.Nicorette provides a lower level of nicotineto your blood than cigarettes, and allowsyou to gradually do away with your body’sneed for nicotine. Because Nicorette doesnot contain the tar or carbon monoxide ofcigarette smoke, it does not have the samehealth dangers as tobacco. However, it still
delivers nicotine, the addictive part of ciga-rette smoke. Nicotine can cause sideeffects such as headache, nausea, upsetstomach, and dizziness.
If you are under 18 yearsof age, ask a doctorbefore use. Before youcan use Nicorette correct-
ly, you have to practice! That sounds silly, butit isn’t. Nicorette isn’t like ordinary chewinggum. It’s a medicine, and must be chewed acertain way to work right. Chewed like ordi-nary gum, Nicorette won’t work well and

• Laughter helps. Watch or read some-thing funny.
Your body is now comingback into balance. Duringthe first few days after you
stop smoking, you might feel edgy andnervous and have trouble concentrating. You might get headaches, feel dizzy anda little out of sorts, feel sweaty or havestomach upsets. You might even havetrouble sleeping at first. These are typi-cal withdrawal symptoms that will goaway with time. Your smoker’s coughwill get worse before it gets better. Butdon’t worry, that’s a good sign.Coughing helps clear the tar depositsout of your lungs.

what to expect.
60425XB Nicorette UsrGde 8/29/06 8:38 AM Page 25
After A Week Or Two.By now you should be feeling more con-fident that you can handle those smokingurges. Many of your withdrawal symp-toms have left by now, and you should benoticing some positive signs: less cough-ing, better breathing and an improvedsense of taste and smell, to name a few. After A Month. You probably have the urge to smokemuch less often now. But urges may stilloccur, and when they do, they are likely
to be powerful ones that come out ofnowhere. Don’t let them catch you offguard. Plan ahead for these difficult times.Concentrate on the ways non-smokers aremore attractive than smokers. Their skin isless likely to wrinkle. Their teeth arewhiter, cleaner. Their breath is fresher.Their hair and clothes smell better. Thatcough that seems to make even a laughsound more like a rattle is a thing of thepast. Their children and others aroundthem are healthier, too.

What To Do About Relapse. What should you do if you slip and startsmoking again? The answer is simple. Alapse of one or two or even a few ciga-rettes has not spoiled your efforts! Discardyour cigarettes, forgive yourself and tryagain. If you start smoking again, keep yourbox of Nicorette for your next quit attempt. If you have taken up regular smokingagain, don’t be discouraged. Researchshows that the best thing you can do is totry again. The important thing is to learnfrom your last attempt.
• Admit that you’ve slipped, but don’ttreat yourself as a failure.
• Try to identify the “trigger” that causedyou to slip, and prepare a better planfor dealing with this problem next time.
• Talk positively to yourself – tell yourselfthat you have learned something fromthis experience.
• Make sure you used Nicorette gumcorrectly over the full 12 weeks toreduce your craving for nicotine.
• Remember that it takes practice to do19Copyright ©2006 GGllaaxxooSSmmiitthhKKlliinnee Consumer Healthcare, L.P.

anything, and quitting smoking is noexception.
Once you’ve stoppedsmoking, take a secondand pat yourself on yourback. Now do it again.
You deserve it. Remember now why youdecided to stop smoking in the first place.Look at your list of reasons. Read themagain. And smile. Now think about all themoney you are saving and what you’ll dowith it. All the non-smoking places youcan go, and what you might do there. All
those years you may have added to yourlife, and what you’ll do with them.Remember that temptation may not begone forever. However, the hard part isbehind you so look forward with a positiveattitude, and enjoy your new life as a non-smoker.

reduce your nicotine intake by switchingto fewer pieces each day. Remember, don’t use Nicorette together with nicotine patches or other nicotine containing products.3. Can I be hurt by using Nicorette? For most adults, the amount of nicotine inthe gum is less than from smoking. Somepeople will be sensitive to even thisamount of nicotine and should not usethis product without advice from theirdoctor (see page 5).
Because Nicorette is a gum-based prod-uct, chewing it can cause dental fillingsto loosen and aggravate other mouth, tooth and jaw problems. Nicorette canalso cause hiccups, heartburn and otherstomach problems especially if chewedtoo quickly or not chewed correctly.4. Will I gain weight? Many people do tend to gain a few poundsthe first 8-10 weeks after they stop smok-ing. This is a very small price to pay for theenormous gains that you will make in youroverall health and attractiveness. If you

continue to gain weight after the first twomonths, try to analyze what you’re doingdifferently. Reduce your fat intake, choosehealthy snacks, and increase your physicalactivity to burn off the extra calories. 5. Is Nicorette more expensive than smoking? The total cost of Nicorette for the twelveweek program is about equal to what aperson who smokes one and a half packsof cigarettes a day would spend on ciga-rettes for the same period of time.
Also, use of Nicorette is only a short-term cost, while the cost of smoking is a long-term cost, because of the healthproblems smoking causes.6. What if I slip up?Discard your cigarettes, forgive yourselfand then get back on track. Don’t con-sider yourself a failure or punish your-self. In fact, people who have alreadytried to quit are more likely to besuccessful the next time.
