QUOTE: “........Shangani Energy Exploration (Pte. Ltd.), Harare, Zimbabwe, completed what it believes to be Africa's first coalbed methane production well.

Test production began in late 1994 from the Tromp-Gas Vlei 1, and two more wells were under way. The site is in Zimbabwe near the Shangani River about halfway between the towns of Bulawayo and Victoria Falls. The wells are being dewatered. The site has more than 100 m of coaly interval 300-500 m deep. Drilling of the wells, designed and supervised by Maralex Resources Inc., Golden, Colo., a U.S. San Juan basin operator, followed several years of core evaluation of gas in place. A possible use for the gas is cogeneration with power sales via nearby high lines. Shangani Energy is jointly owned by Zimbabwe Mining & Smelting Co., formerly Union Carbide Zimbabwe, a major ferrochrome producer, and Discovery Investments, a Zimbabwean firm with other coalbed methane leases.

The project is separate from coalbed methane work conducted in Zimbabwe by Afpenn Exploration U.K. (see map, OGJ, Nov. 7, 1994, P. 95).....”. UNQUOTE.

ENERGY PEDIA NEWS 05 Sep 2010 :

QUOTE : “........Hwange Colliery Company (HCC), Zimbabwe's largest coal miner, has said it will commit $10 million towards methane gas exploration along the Hwange-Gwayi belt in Matabeleland North. Geologists estimate Zimbabwe is sitting on the largest reserves of untapped methane in the region.

HCC chief executive officer Fred Moyo said the company last month submitted its application to government, seeking permission to explore methane gas in Matebeleland North. Though government is yet to respond, Moyo is confident government will not reject its proposition, as it seeks to ease the country’s worsening energy deficit.

'Indeed we submitted our application to government seeking a permit to begin exploration for coal bed methane gas between the Hwange and Gwayi areas,' he said. 'We are still waiting for government’s response to our application but we hope that it will sail through.'

He said the initial phase of the exploration would require $10 million, while phase two would cost more than that. 'The first stage of the exploration would take between $5 million and $10 million. The cost will rise as we implement further stages of the exercise,' he said. 'We are looking at how we can exploit all fossil fuels without just having to rely on coal. This is about gaining value along the chain of production. .........” .UNQUOTE.

Moyo said venturing into gas mining would be commercially viable, as gas has multiple industrial uses. 'Here we are looking at a resource that is multi-purposeful: it can be used to manufacture fertilisers and in North America as fuel for vehicles. The opportunities are many,' he said.

Zimbabwe has a number of energy projects that are stalled at a pre-feasibility stage due to funding challenges. The Lupane-Binga gas project — one of the largest — requires an estimated $12 million to determine whether its coal reserves are commercially viable. Once developed, these projects are expected to ease the country’s erratic power challenges. Gas is also considered to be a cleaner source of energy.

Geologists have also called for a scientific quantification of Zimbabwe’s mineral wealth and gas in particular, in order to lure investors into the energy sector, still grossly underfunded........”UNQUOTE.
