Welcome to Optimising Coaching . . .

Becoming a Coach or Mentor As someone who has a real interest in coaching and mentoring you are likely to be keen to find out more about Optimising Coaching (OC) and how we can support your development. It might be that you intend to use coaching and mentoring within your current role in an organisation, offer it as a service within your own business or primarily to enhance your own skills as a leader or manager. Whatever the reason working with OC will enable you to achieve your specific goals. As a participant on our coaching and mentoring programmes you will graduate with the insights, knowledge, skills and experience to significantly increase your personal and professional potential as well as support others to achieve theirs. As experienced coaches and mentors ourselves our starting point is always your own self development. This is the key to working effectively with each unique individual you coach or mentor whether it is on a day to day basis or within a more formal, structured 1:1 or team coaching setting. As a skilled coach and mentor you will be able to recognise when a coaching or mentoring approach is appropriate and will know how to flex the way you work to empower and support others. We offer a full range of programmes from Level 2 to

Level 7. However, if you are engaged in a middle or senior management role we recommend the Level 5 (degree level) programme. If you are in a more senior post, or want to coach or mentor others in executive positions, we recommend the Level 7 (master’s level) programme. However, there are no hard and fast rules for which programme you undertake. We are happy to support you in thinking through what is right for you. Our programmes are accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and a nationally recognised qualification is available should you choose that option. This qualification is recognised by all Higher Education Institutes including universities, professional and commissioning bodies. Our Certificate programmes give you a good grounding in coaching and mentoring practice. However, if you intend to use coaching and mentoring in a way where you will be conducting formal coaching sessions with clients, either as an internal coach or mentor or an independent coach, we recommend our Diploma programmes. These have a higher proportion of time focused purely on the practice of coaching and mentoring that is recommended by professional bodies and often asked for by clients.

The xué Way - Practice Informing Learning All Optimising Coaching programmes focus their attention on the process and practice of coaching and mentoring which we call The xué Way. xué (sh’way - Mandarin for ‘to learn’) underpins our belief that it is only through reflection on practice that you develop the deeper level insights you require, about yourself and others, to be able to work confidently, effectively and ethically with each one of your clients. Coaching and mentoring theory, differing approaches and methodologies, skills, tools and techniques will be the backdrop rather than the primary focus of your programme.

The achievement of a national qualification, for those who take this route, is a public statement of the commitment you are making to best practice and ongoing learning. All our training programmes are delivered by coaches for coaches and on our programmes you will coach and be coached and mentored. Throughout the face-to-face sessions you will be expected to take the role of client and coach in a real context. Your Lead Coaches are qualified and experienced successful coaches who all run their own coaching practice either independently or as an internal coach.

One of the first things I noticed about my Coaching and Mentoring Programme was that it talked-the-talk and walked-the-walk of coaching and mentoring. I genuinely felt that my needs were put first and I was supported from beginning to end. I was surprised and delighted by the level of self- awareness the programme allowed me to develop. It was an unexpected bonus, and one that has enabled me to be a more effective coach and to be more connected to the people I work, collaborate and live with! I highly and happily recommend anyone interested in coaching and mentoring to contact Optimising Coaching

Our Level 5 Programme Level 5 Coaching & Mentoring Certificate and Diploma As an ILM Approved Centre OC offers Certificate and Diploma Coaching and Mentoring Programmes leading to a national qualification recognised by employers, commissioners, Higher Education, professional coaching associations and clients. Our Level 5 (degree level) programmes carry credits which can contribute towards an undergraduate or post graduate degree. In considering an OC Level 5 Coaching and Mentoring Programme you are likely to be . . .

• a middle/senior manager or leader wishing to incorporate coaching and mentoring into your leadership and/or

• working in a training and development role with peers and/or middle or senior managers and leaders

• a current freelance consultant, coach or mentor working at senior/middle leadership levels, or intend to become one in the future

OC provided me with coaching training during 2014/15 to support achievement of an IML Level 5 Programme in Coaching and Mentoring. The training and support offered was excellent covering both core skills and the development of wider thinking in areas such as health coaching and self-compassion. The training develops the vital self-awareness that coaching requires as well as focus on the client and customer. This philosophical approach imbues the whole experience with OC and I have no hesitation in recommending them both as training providers and coaches.

Programme Timescale The above elements are usually spread over approximately 9 months for both the Certificate and Diploma programmes. The additional coaching hours and supervision for the Diploma can extend beyond this as required. Many of our participants are often concerned that they will have difficulties in completing the live coaching element, particularly for the Diploma programme. They usually find that their concerns are unfounded and many of our graduates transferred from the certificate to the diploma programme as their confidence grew in

both themselves and the training and support they received. Assignments associated with the ILM qualification need to be completed and submitted within three years of starting your programme. Ongoing Support As an OC Coaching and Mentoring Programme participant you will be automatically enrolled into the OC Coaching Community.

As I started my Level 5 Coaching and Mentoring programme I was keen to build on my people- centred approach to leadership. The programme’s experiential approach enhanced my coaching and mentoring skills and I now use coaching both formally and informally to support and empower my colleagues. I also feel better equipped to support my organisation through more effective strategic partnerships. I now want to contribute towards developing a coaching culture in my organisation so that we may all may reap the benefits. I highly recommend a this Coaching and Mentoring programme to anyone wanting to improve the quality of their relationships both in and out of their workplace. Ruby Bhattal

I completed the Level 7 Executive Coaching and Mentoring programme in 2013 and would strongly recommend it to aspiring coaches. The programme has been carefully structured to meet the demands of the ILM accreditation, yet is tailored to participants' needs and previous experiences. It is strongly led by a skilled and experienced coach who provides a supportive context for learning and who models ethical, reflective practice. The programme provides a strong practical toolkit and the skills and confidence to develop as a coaching practitioner. The continuing support when the taught programme ends, through regular workshops and access to professional supervision, is invaluable. Rik Boxer
