MEaN quality awards!

As we begin 2011, I want to revisit an important topic that was presented at last month’s District meetings –

the redistricting of the cooperative. As you know, each year our Board’s Governance Committee reviews the state of the current District territories, looking for ways to better improve member representation within the cooperative. As you can see, the current District map, shown on Pg. 3, is quite segmented and the distribution of the members, farms and milk production is unbalanced in many instances. For example, counties like Dane, Lafayette and Buchanan are currently split among three directors. And in last year’s election, 20% of the membership was represented by only one director.

In order to give better representation to the members, the Governance Committee voted to redraw the map along county lines, taking into account the number of members, farms and milk pounds accounted for in each county, with the goal of distributing them more evenly among the Districts. As you can see, the proposed map, also on Pg. 3, highlights the new Districts. This entire process will take three years to fully realize as the existing Board members will be serving out their remaining terms. You’ll notice that the number of Districts has been condensed from 13 to 10. This means that there will now be 10 Directors and 3 At-Large Directors representing the membership.

While it was originally proposed that these new directors will be considered “At-Large”, during discussions with co-op members during December’s district meetings, it was suggested that a policy be put in place to keep these “At-Large” directors from all residing in the same geograhic location. Therefore, the Governance Committee and the Board will review this suggestion at an upcoming meeting.

The process for electing these “At-Large” Directors will be as follows:

• Governance Committee will develop and approve qualifications to be an At-Large Director. These will be published in the February 2011 Dairyman.•At-Large Directors are nominated at the District Rep meeting in March 2011.•Nominated individuals will be asked to create a biography in preparation to communicate this to the membership.

REDISTRICTING STORY CONTINUES ON PG. 15

pA PUZZLING CHALLENGE: The current map illustrates

the issues of fragmented counties and segmented territories. The allocation

of members, farms and milk production is heavily

unbalanced.

A FITTING SOLUTION: The new map illustrates the

clearly defined territories for the new districts. The

number of districts has been reduced to ten, and the balance of members,

farms and milk production is allocated more evenly,

resulting in better representation.

Every winter, Swiss Valley Farms honors its many Blue Ribbon Quality Milk Award winners at its district meetings. This year marked the program’s 37th year. Co-op members work hard year-round to meet Swiss Valley Farms quality milk standards. The end result of all of this effort is millions of pounds of high quality milk that

the cooperative turns into delicious dairy products.

The list of Quality Award winners begins here and will continue next month as well. Swiss Valley Farms applauds everyone who received awards this year. Good luck in the coming year with your quality milk production.

Applications for the Swiss Valley Farms 2011 Scholarship Contest are now available. The co-op is opening the scholarship competition earlier in the year to help students gain access to these funds before the fall. If you are

a high school senior or are currently enrolled in a college or technical school, or plan to enroll in the fall, it is time to get your application for a 2011 Swiss Valley Farms Cooperative Scholarship.

The co-op is pleased to again offer five agriculture scholarships in addition to three scholarships for non-agriculture majors.

Co-op members who are studying agriculture-related majors can compete for five scholarships . . . two for $1,000 and three for $500. These scholarships are designed to promote the study of agriculture beyond the high school level. There are also three $500 scholarships for students studying in any field.

To be eligible for any of these scholarships, an applicant must be a co-op member or a son or daughter of a co-op member, or the manager or operator of a farm for a Swiss Valley Farms Cooperative member, or a student whose family manages or operates a farm for a Swiss Valley Farms Cooperative member at the time of submitting the scholarship application and when the cash awards are made.

Any high school graduate or any 2011 college student who meets these qualifications is eligible to apply for a scholarship. However, if you have won a Swiss Valley Farms scholarship in the past, you are ineligible to win another.

The applicant must be enrolled full-time in an accredited university, college or vocational-technical institution for a degree program or short-course program. To get an application, go swissvalley.com and look under Member Benefits. Or e-mail [email protected].

Component Tests Via E-mailTo further assist our co-op members in getting their test results as quickly as possible, members now can elect to have their

pickup component test results e-mailed to them each Monday through Saturday. If you want to get your test results over the Internet, you will need to supply Swiss Valley Farms with a working e-

mail address. To set this up, use the e-mail account you would like to have your tests sent to and send an e-mail to: [email protected].

Include in this e-mail both your farm name AND farm number, then retype your e-mail address in the letter. Swiss Valley Farms will discontinue sending your test result with your hauler and you will receive them via this e-mail address.

If you have any questions, please contact Tim Genthe at 563-583-7669 or contact your Swiss Valley field representative.
