Getting Started with Moodle The CNSC Learning Management System was prepared using version 3.8 of

Moodle as the platform and may be subjected to minor changes with upgrades.

The word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented

Dynamic Learning Environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and

education theorists. It's also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering

through something, doing things as it occurs to you to do them, an enjoyable

tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity. As such it applies both to the way

Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach studying

or teaching an online course. Anyone who uses Moodle is a Moodler.

Moodle is based on the Open Source model of software development, which

involves releasing code for future versions early and often, allowing the community

to bug test and drive the development in terms of features. The source code (from

which the program is created) is available free of charge and anyone is permitted to

modify or sell the product, provided the source code of such changes are provided

free of charge to the community. One of the biggest advantages to this model is that

anyone can contribute to the code to fix errors, optimize performance and enhance

security. The vast majority of open source products make money from support and

development fees. Examples include Firefox, Linux and the Apache Webserver.

Student role

A user with the Student role in Moodle can participate in course activities and

view resources but not alter them or see the class gradebook. They can see their

own grades if the teacher has allowed this.

When a student first joins Moodle they see all available courses. Once they have

enrolled or been enrolled into at least one course they then only see their own

courses in the My Courses section of the navigation block or via their dashboard.

A student's view and navigation in Moodle will be different from the course

teacher's or from students assigned to a different group.

How do I take an exam/quiz in the CNSC LMS?

Before beginning an exam or quiz

• Be sure you’ve studied the course material!

As most of your exams will be timed, it is imperative you use your time wisely. Being prepared will reduce much of the stress associated with taking exams.

• Be sure you have enough free time to finish the exam!

Once you press the start button on an exam, the timer will begin and continue to count down until time has expired, whether you are actively taking the exam or not.

Do not navigate to other pages in LMS while you have the exam open. This can cause issues with your submission.

• Be sure you have a reliable Internet connection.

You should only start exams from a reliable Internet connection.

• Be sure you fully submit the exam once you are finished.

Starting an exam or quiz

Select the exam from the course home page.

The next page has your instructor’s directions for the exam, information about the number of attempts allowed and time limit, and the Attempt quiz now button. Be sure you have enough time to finish your exam.

After ensuring you are prepared to begin the exam and going over your instructor’s directions, use the Attempt quiz now button to begin your attempt.

After starting the attempt, the first page of quiz questions will be displayed

To answer multiple choice or true/false questions, simply select the answer you believe is correct. For essay and short answer type questions, you will need to type your responses into the indicated fields. Other question types may require you to select the correct answer from a drop-down menu.

When you have answered all of the questions on a page, use the Next button at the bottom of the page to navigate to the next page, or to begin the submission process if you are on the last page.

Page 14: CNSC LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

This will show you a summary of your attempt, including any unanswered questions and the amount of time remaining. If you have skipped a question, it will be shown here as Not yet answered. A question’s number under the Question heading is a link that can be used to take you directly to a question. The Return to attempt button will take you to the beginning of the exam

After verifying you have answered every question and you are satisfied with your attempt, use the Submit all and finish button to submit your attempt for scoring.

Page 15: CNSC LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Depending on your instructor’s settings, this will take you to a review. Here you can see a review of your attempt, which will show you information about each question and your results.

When you are done reviewing your submission, use the Finish review link at the bottom of the page to end the review.

This will take you back to the start page of the exam or quiz. This page will give you an overview of your previous attempts and enable you to attempt the exam again if your instructor allows more than one attempt.

How to view my Grades in CNSC LMS?

Click the Grade Button in left side of your screen and it will automatically display the grade you earned from the subject.
