Euology William Patrick McIntyre 20.4.1942 - 30.7.2014

(The family apologises for the delay)

William Patrick McIntyre, better known as “Bill”, was born at Rochester on April 20 1942 to Alice and Stephen “Tup”. Bill, the youngest of seven children, they being Jim, Frank, Marie, Betty, Barry, Eileen and Bill, grew up on the family farm at Tennyson, 4

kms south of the store. Being the youngest of course Bill was apparently spoiled rotten by all and had a lot of fun running around with youngest sister Eileen. They shared a lovely bond throughout their lives as a result. They used to do things together like collecting eggs from their neighbours the Schmidts across the road. Eileen recalled one day where they were coming back and they had to get through the fence, she asked her little brother to hold the fence open for her and he wouldn’t (the little buggar!) which of course lead to the eggs being dropped and bro-ken, not impressing anyone, least of all Alice! But they didn’t get smacks for it! One of Bill’s older cousins, Mary Dullard (Slattery) fondly remembers looking after Bill as a youngster. Mary adored Bill, he was just such a cute little kid, later on when he started playing bowls he reminded her greatly of her own father Bill Slattery in the way he walked. Bill attended Tennyson State School as all his siblings had before him. The mode of transport was by pony, with brother Barry riding in front, while sisters Ei-leen teemed up on the other pony. Sometimes they would head home with great speed on the pony while other times they had to walk, that is on foot, because when the pony wasn’t secured properly it would head back home to the farm. But if you didn’t shut the gate once home, it would walk back up to school. Cheeky thing! During his school years at Tennyson, Bill’s lunch pail always contained a jam sandwich! He just loved jam sandwiches, no butter just bread and jam. No doubt this continued when the school closed and he took a bus into Lockington to attend school there. This was where he

became great friends with another young boy, Tim Evans, who lived in Locky. They had a wonderful friendship over the years. They played a lot of footy together and Tim recalls Bill as a good player who played a lot across the backline. He had a good kick and was able to kick with both feet. In 1963 Bill won the Best and Fairest aged 21, but unfortunately a few years later he suffered a knee injury which forced him to give the game away. Bill had a keen interest in the AFL, following Collingwood, he knew the weights and heights of many of the good players. Tim and Bill had many footy weekends in their later years in Melbourne and Geelong, attending a match on Friday night, Saturday, Saturday night and another one on Sun-day. This wouldn’t be so easy to do nowadays. The first time he went to a game at Etihad he said “You could fit some hay in here”. Bill loved following LBU and has been a great supporter throughout his life, he didn’t miss it and went each week, usually with his old neighbour John Douglas. Bill enjoyed his golf, playing quite a bit over the years and later on he played bowls, this kept him busy and he enjoyed the company it offered, organising a few social nights which he enjoyed greatly. As young men do Bill and Tim had a few trips together and one of them also included another young guy by the name of Max Jones. They planned to go to Cairns and thought they could get up there in 4 days, but after 5 days they hadn’t even made it to Brisbane! Good times also came in the form of shooting trips with the Harrison boy’s, they had this old Chev car together which they drove up in and it used to stop. So boy’s being boys they decided to shoot the hell out of it, then some other fellas came along and gave them a tow start with a bit of wire. When they got it going the wire broke and Tim and Bill took off passing the other car leaving them behind. A little while later they got to thinking how they’d never seen a car hit a tree so they decided that they’d try and give it a go, planning to jump out beforehand. All was going to plan until the steering wheel was bumped when they were exiting the vehicle and it veered off away from the tree and into a nearby lagoon. Some time later when the lagoon dried up, re-vealing the bullet ridden Chev, many stories abound about it’s journey into the drink, puzzling local police as it had no plates since it wasn’t registered. So much for seeing a car hit a tree.

LOCKY LIONS CORNER

Welcome to “The Corner”. I will start with some of the past, and up and coming events. On the 17th May the Lions ran their 5th Swap & Market Day, and it was a good day, our sites were down on last years numbers, but the catering was a great success, which was run by Lion Joe Chappel with the help of other Lions, Lions Ladies, and Lions Daughters, and other volunteers, to those people who helped out a very big “Thank You” for that support. Our Swap & Market Day for 2016 will be as follows: Swap & Market Day with the addition of “Show and Shine” cars and trucks, including vintage vehicles, and that will be on the 15th May 2016, so come on our locals, dig that old car out from under the tree and bring it, and engines, and parts, along to our next swap. The sites are 6m x 8m for $10 per site. On the 10th June we have our change over night, on which we can change the positions of our members and executive if we wish to do so. This is a great night with visitors from other Lions Clubs within the area. The next event is the Public Speaking for the children from different classes at the Lockington Consolidated School in which Lions of Locky will give out encouragement awards on the night, to the winners of different groups, that is on June 24th. Our Lion David Hammond will give a write up of the winning students of this event in the coming weeks. I know this is early but the “Hoffmans” will be coming to Locky in November for their last performance here, so will keep you informed on that date. Thank you Locky, for your support, yours in Lionism, Bob MacDonald, Bye for now.

May 25 - At the cub there is still plenty of activity with the popular Scrounge event being well attended on each Wednesday at 1.00pm. Last week Rhonda Gallagher spreadeagled the field in scoring 49 points

ahead of Marie Malone and Roley Head both on 39 points. The previous week Lorraine Appleby stormed home to amass 34 points for a memorable victory from Roley Head 30 points. The Scrounge event is a positive game to hone those skills in a one-on-one situation. All bowlers or non-bowlers are very welcome to attend. Cost $3.00 per

player commencing at 1.00pm. A team of Don Isgro, Russell Shawcross and Tom Davis journeyed to Barham on Friday and enjoyed the afternoon of bowls. At the recent wind-up day for the sixty and over competition, Les Forster was acknowledged for his contribution on behalf of the Lockington Bowls Club towards supporting the group. The club will be celebrating the sixty years anniversary this coming season. Preparation for this event will be in the mix shortly. The greens were officially opened in October 1955.

MEDIA RELEASE - THE HON DR SHARMAN STONE MP

Depreciation for Murray Farmers Brought Forward

Murray farmers can now claim a tax deduction on all capital expenditure on water facilities, fodder storage assets and new fencing from the date of the 2015-16 Budget. “Farmers can fully deduct the cost of water facilities and fencing in the year they are purchased and deduct the cost of fodder storage assets over three years. Farmers all around the electorate will be able to benefit from these changes, no matter the size of the business,” Federal mem-ber for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said. “Small businesses also received a boost on Budget night given they can now immediately claim accelerated deprecia-tion on any new business assets costing up to $20,000. Farms with turnover of less than $2 million qualify as a small business and are therefore also eligible to immediately write-off any asset purchases costing less than $20,000. The de-cision to bring forward the start date of accelerated deprecia-tion for all farmers, regardless of the size of their farm, al-lows them to invest immediately and ideally purchases are from local businesses,” Sharman Stone said. “Bringing forward these changes to begin from 1 July 2016 to 12 May 2015 is worth about $72 million over the forward estimates. More measures of special support for farmers will be announced in the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper. Over 4,800 farmers or their partners are currently receiving Farm Household Allowance across Australia and I encourage anyone who is in need of support to contact the Department of Human Services to check their eligibility. Farm concessional loans for farm businesses are also avail-able. For information on the new drought support measures

go to www.agriculture.gov.au/drought or to contact the De-partment of Human Services on 132 316” Sharman Stone said.

2016 Murray Calendar Needs Your Photos It’s that time of the year again when the annual Murray Cal-endar is put together. The calendar is now in its fifth edition and has become a collector’s piece and a really useful prompt for people’s appointments. “Last year I was sent over 250 photographs for the 2015 calendar and it was such a hard task to make selection. I try to ensure photos cover the electorate north, east, south and west,” Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said. “I urge everyone to send in high resolution photographs in landscape format so we have the best range of photos to choose from. All of the same rules still apply. You must live in Murray electorate and your photo must be taken in the Murray electorate. Your photos should show off our wonder-ful landscapes, wildlife, people, animals, events, towns, whatever is special to us,” Sharman Stone said. “If your photo is in the 2016 calendar more than 60,000 households will gaze upon it for a whole month. Send your photos via email, USB drive, or CD/DVD, to keep your qual-ity and ease of transfer. There is also no limit of the number of photographs you can enter, the more photos the better. You can email your photos to [email protected] or send in your CDs or USBs to PO Box 884, Shepparton, 3630. Remember to leave your name, the title of your photo-graphs, their location, your phone number and email address so I can contact you,” Sharman Stone said. “Entries will close on August the 28th 2015. I encourage everyone to get snapping,” Sharman Stone said.
