The Gifted Student:

• Needs fewer repetitions to retain material

• Makes connections across subjects

• Uses divergent thinking to come up with new, sometimes ‘out of the box’ connections and solutions

Gifted students learn in different ways, NOT just faster!

The Gifted/Catalyst Model

Shared responsibility: – collaboration between the classroom teacher & TD/catalyst teacher

Direct Instruction: TD/Catalyst teacher teaches students directly

Indirect Instruction: TD/Catalyst teacher provides lessons, activities, and strategies to teachers to use in the regular classroom

Gifted identification is part of Indirect Services provided by the TD Catalyst Teacher.

Catalyst Model-JV Washam

Collaboration between:– Classroom Teachers– TD Catalyst Teacher– Administrators

Mrs. Bralley’s Service Times:– Direct (time: 60-70%) – Indirect (time: 30-40%)

There is a need for both direct and indirect services. Differentiation is needed in the regular classroom because the TD teacher cannot see all students every day.
