Instead or Harmony
ing themselves to it, are only i.,·viting trouble.
The reaping of what he ha;sown must inevitably be done bythe sower, Are the world'spresent woes not convincing evidence of this?
ApartheidTHE Apartheid policy of the
Government, which is the basisof the Group Areas Act, has terribly upset the Indian community.Strong protests have been voicedby it locally and a great deal ofnoise has been made outsidedenouncing the Government andappealing for help. The SoutbAfrican Indian Congress, a few\veeks ago, voiced its strongprotest against the Group AreasAct but failed to give a properlead to the community for anyimmediate action. It made astrong pIca for a non-Buropeanunited froDl and for this purposeurged upon the people to consolidate all their Corces. A similarline was adopted by the NatalIndian Congress at its crnferenceheld recently in Durban.
Meanwhile it will not be out ofplace to examine whiSt actuallythe attitude of the communityis towards the Apartbeidpoli~y "is. Does it really burt ourself-respect or do we mlke anoise only in so far as it affectsus materially? Have we not alreadysubmitted to it and are we notcontinuing to do so? The mostshocking examples of our submission to Aparthe,d are hotels, bars and the race COurse. \Y/hatdo we see there? Every hoteland bar bas a back door entrance specially provided for Indians. An notice "Indian Bar" isto be seen at every hotel. At therace course too no Indian is permitted to enter it respectably, ifthere is any rCllpectability in doingso. A back door entranceis provided Cor all non-Europeans and we Indians patronise these places most joyfullywithout the slightest compunction. It is a shocking sight tosee the hundreds :lOd thou.5.1nds tbat visit these places. That, to our mind, is sub-
