City of Medicine Academy The Community Durham, North Carolina is known internationally as the “City of Medicine” and serves as an intricate part of the noted Research Triangle Park, the world’s largest university-related research park. This identity has been built on Durham’s outstanding hospitals, universities, cutting edge research companies, and major national and international healthcare organizations. Durham is home to Duke University, North Carolina Central University, and Durham Technical Community College, and has within its neighboring cities the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University. The School Noted by The Washington Post as one of the Most Challenging High Schools in America from 2014-2018, City of Medicine Academy (CMA) is accredited by AdvancED and the NC Department of Public Instruction and is one of six magnet high schools in the Durham Public School System. City of Medicine Academy is honors and college preparatory-focused and is the only North Carolina freestanding magnet school with a healthcare concentration. As part of this curriculum, CMA students can pursue rigorous health sciences and nursing courses and earn certifications in several areas. City of Medicine is strategically located adjacent to Duke Regional Hospital to afford students access to clinical rotations, field experiences and internship programs where they work side-by-side with healthcare practitioners. As an innovative high school, dual-enrollment at Durham Technical Community College is part of the scheduling options for students, who may graduate with a degree or certificate. Additional courses and opportunities are offered via North Carolina Virtual Public Schools. CMA is a 1:1 take-home environment. Calendar 180 days / 2 semesters (18 weeks per semester) The City of Medicine Academy operates on a 4x5 block schedule (four 90-minute classes five days per week.) Students are able to earn eight credits per academic school year. Mid-year transcripts are available after January 8, 2018.
