If statistics mean anything, it ought
to be possible to drawn some conclu-
sions, from certain figures published by
our neighbor, The Luso HawaiianoS.hpaper says that the Portuguese colony
- here numered, on the 31st Decemberlast respectively 5230 males and 4138females, not conluding the Portuguesebom in m nor the children
of Portuguese and kanakas, (halfwhites), which are accounted for in
different sections of the census. Inthe above' figure, a good many children, for we all know that the Portuguesealways have large families, so that it
might be safe, to inter that at least, onehalf of the Portuguese colony arc notof age for reading or writing.
On the other hand, the Luso informsus, through the courtesy of the postalofficials, that the Portuguese corres-pondanc- c
constitutes, quite an item ol
our postal income. This office sentaway to Portugal and the colopies, during the six weeks comprised' between the 1st of September and the
15th of October, nothing less than 200ordinary letters, 154 registered letters,
and 167 newspapers. In June last, thenumber was still larger, for 1584 letterswere sent away, which would constjtutea yearly proportion of about 19,000letters. These figures, as the Lusoquietly remarks would tend to show
that the Poitugcese element is not- - by
t.far so illiterate as many represent it
to be, but that, considering their situa-
tions in life, they highly appreciate theblessings of correspondence. And it
must further be rpmarked, that as they, have no business to transact outsfde of
v the country, hll the letters they write,
are merely friendly correspondapce, and they' certainly' contribute propbrtionatcly as liberally as the Anglo.
Saxons to the post office, whicli wjllhave, in the future, to add another fea-tur- e
to the Portugeese contribution, that of the money orders only lately
started.. .p,
It is a problem whether it is wise toeducate the humble in birth out of
their native surroundings. Unfortunately most of them so educated attemptto, ljft themselves by their boot strapsji)tovth.e realm of notoriety. Unfor-
tunate results generally follow toomuch imagination and the young peojpie who haye the bipod and bone towarm the imagination, generally --"bringtheir pigs to a poor market," as thesaying is. It were' well with tile boys
and , girls of this, and other places,'mat tnetr parents see to it, ueiore (t istoo late, that they are properly eduicated,..withiii. thevSphero. of their use-
fulness. It would be well for all
people if they could be born old andsee backward. The trouble is wethink, wt: see forward. ';

V A stranger would naturally concludethat' our police headquarters werelocated on the cpnier of King and Kort
streets, from the number of knights ofthe lodge and club at all times assem-ble- d
there. Would it not be advisable for them.(q dissiitiiiiate theirranks and distribute their forcesthroughout other portions of the city? This'Js merely a suggestion tluown putwithout charge.

Yesterday afternoon, while a rep-resentation of the Pri:ss was walkingalong King street, he noted a cisc otcruelty to animals, which in mostAmerican cities would not go un-punished. The case in question, wasa native coming into town on horse-back, when his innocent beast stumb-led into one of the numerous mudholes in the immediate vicinity, andneaily threw its rider to the ground. Heimmediately turned his big riding whipbutt end to and beat the horse overthe head in a most unmerciful manner.Such brutal tieatmenttodumb animals,is prohibited by law, and our police forceshould see that the law is enforced.

The say : that some people pay tobe allowed to sing in public; that thedish of political hash will have someindependent hairs 111 it; that the peoplewho love home best are those who stayaway; that the last batch of politicalgossip is seasoned with social scandal;that the boat clubs are stuffed oars orstuffed clubs or whatevervyou wish tocall them; that the coming man is notborn; that the opium men know theirbusiness provided you let them alone;that the sunflower racket is best at thenoon-tid- e hour; that the boys who pulledthe paper query at Charley Mc Carthy'slast night, foundout what was written onthe other side ; that the clown made apoint not expected by the public ; thatthe Circus dude is a love of a fellow ;
that both the Fort street and Hotelstreet dudes are jpalous of him ; thatthe Government intends running adebt railroad to Creditville ; that thenext opera troupe will bring a publicmuzzle for local critics ; and that thePress man knows more than he tells.

The Circus Company gave an "exce-llent last night to a fairaudience. The company deserves suc-
cess, because they have given betterthen they have promised.
The big screen act was loudly ap-plauded and was better than anythingheretofore done. The f1 BalancingTrapeze," act was performed withgreat applause from the audience andthe hat throwing act was whirled in theair until tile spectators were dizzy. To-
night and night the Circuswill not pe'rfonh "but on Saturday nightwill show to a bumper house.
While with a friend onthe west side of Fort street last even-ing, a Pri:ss reporter witnessed anamusing little incident that might haveresulted seriously, but for the timelytumble of a soft felt hat. The remainsof a sidewalk in that vici-
nity are raised several inches above thelevel of the gravel walk, making a regular trap-fal- l for the unwary. As one ofour city bloods came sprightly spottingby, evidently enraptured by the swcitstrains of music from the AustralianCircus band, he very skilfully struckhis starboard big toe squarely againstthe end of a plank and fellheadlong to the ground, striking his
squarely into his soft felthat which reached terra firma just intime to save our dude a square inch ortwo of cuticle from the end of his nose.

ASTOR HOUSE CURE-F- OR-
A Sure Remedy. Properly Cooked Food. An Ounce of Pre-
vention Better than a Pound of Cure.
One great evil of this city is a certain fiendisliness displayed byrestaurant keepers in the manner in which they slap victuals togetherand throw the same at their customers.
Worse by far than a certain Nevada Eating House where a trampwas in the act of walking out without paying. The irate cashier violentlyseized a pie crust, took deadly aim,, and brought down the unfortunatefree luncher, badly cut about the head. The Grand Jury afterwardsheld the cashier to answer for assault with a deadly weapon. Take forinstance a Honolulu Hash Factory doughnut when cooled off. Aleaden bullet is no where in comparison; then again some of the HOTCAKES would prove unworkable for mending old shoes and will stretchfurther than any rubber band, ever made. From all such, etc., deliver us.
The above named instances of cooking depravity are much to bedeplored.
A recent change in the Proprietorship of the ASTOR HOUSE(at all times famous for good grub) enables the management to greatlyfacilitate the suppression of such villianous systems of careless cookingwhich tend in such a marked degree to destroy the Ilunftn Digestiveorgans. Upon all occasions it will be found a real luxury to step into ourDining Parlors (no flies) and there partake of a savory meal cooked byour Champion Chef.
livery morning Boarders and Transient customers may order Ger-man Pancake, Tender Loin, Porterhouse, or Sirloin Steak, withor without onions, Prime Ham and fresh eggs Royal BreakfastBacon; Fish every day, Rib Mutton Chop (none but the best ofmaterial used.) The midday bill ol fare as published on the BulletinBoard is something that everybody should read and inwardly digest. For supper we supply in addition to the substantial goods. Spongecake, Ice cream, Jellies, Fruit, and various other dainties. Someof our would-b- e competitors are surprised to know how we can sell 2 1
meal tickets for $4.50. And in put elegantly appointed private diningroom only charge 35 cent for meal.
The secret may easily be' given away; the ASTOR HOUSE iscentrally located and doing a largo Transient cash trade. Meals at allhours product's a constant flow qf ready money, thereby enabling us togo out to the market and buy at reduced rates for cash. Our patrons re-
ceive the full benefit of this superior system of dealing. All who have notyet experienced the luxury of eating at the Astor House can now comeright in and be made welcome at the oldest established .Dining Roomsin the Hawaiian Kint'dom. ,15i. mo.
