Thank you to Ben Roche (SCU Coordinator & Sabine & Mile’s dad), Mr Priestley and Ms Hutchinson for coordinating the day. Please enjoy the student report in this newsletter. COMMUNITY SERVICE PROVIDER SPEED DATING Last week District Primary Principals were given the opportunity to have a 5minute chat with around 40 community providers including services such as Community Family Referrals, Lismore library, Beyond Blue, Flourishing Families, Red Cross, TAFE and Fair Trading. This was a brilliant idea as in my many years as a principal and teacher, I have been approached by families with different needs asking where they can get help and I haven’t always been able to find an answer. Although many programs were aimed at secondary school age children, there were many fantastic, no-cost programs for our K – 6 students and families. I now have a book of contacts and information and encourage anyone seeking help to come and have a chat with me regarding possible options. CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS K – 6 (CAPA) In CAPA this term, we are focusing on dance and movement. All students have enjoyed participating in a variety of dances which include individual, partner and line dancing. Kindergarten have enjoyed learning dances from Central and South America and Europe. This week they were treated to Irish Dancing with SLSO Miss Jess who has performed and taught Irish Dancing for many years. SHELTERED RAMPS & TREES Our new shelters over the ramps are complete. We are currently working on the lights running through access lights rather than security lights so they are not on all night and our apologies to any inconvenience caused. We will also have trimming and possible removal of trees deemed potentially unsafe, over the next couple of weeks.

FANTASTIC DAY AT UNIVERSITY ENTERPRISE LAB S2 & S3 students had a brilliant time at Southern Cross University last Monday. GEARING UP FOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL While our long-distance champions are running at Corndale tomorrow, K -6 will be participating in functional movement skills training in preparation for our school athletics carnival on Thursday 20th June and the First North carnival on Monday 29th July. Lock in those dates. COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY We have attached a letter to parents regarding NCCD. The word 'disability' can sometimes cause concern however parents and carers need to aware that any child receiving a level of adjustment in their learning, may attract further funding for the school while children are receiving support for a period of time. The school data collection is confidential and individual names are not used. NUDE FOOD DAY NEXT WEDNESDAY! We are very proud of the healthy lunch boxes we see at our school and we also want to thank Anabelle and her volunteers, Charlotte and Cara, for the delicious hot lunch yesterday. On the first Wednesday of each month, we ask every family to make a special effort in providing children with healthy, raw and cooked food brought to school in reusable containers. We hope you will support this promotion of healthy food choices and environmentally friendly packaging. P & C MEETING NEXT MONDAY AT 6:15 All welcome, lots to plan and chat about! Michelle Slee Principal

Expectation of the Week “Pay it forward”

Let’s make this a community one! The idea is if someone does something kind for you, you then pass this on by doing

a kind deed for someone else. Student Assembly

Our next student assembly will be held tomorrow, Friday 7th June, at 2.15pm in the school hall. The 3-4 class will be performing an item for your enjoyment. All families are welcome to attend. Congratulations to the following students who received awards at our last assembly.

Kinder Finn and Isla Class 1-2 Archie P, Marlon and Mason Class 3-4 Ella, Sholeeka and Taj Class 5-6 Aiden, Ella and Logan

The Citizenship Award went to Magnus Mactier.

Stage 2-3 S.C.U. Enterprise Lab Excursion On Monday 27th, 3/4/5 and 6 went on an out of school excursion to Southern Cross University for an enterprise day, linked to the current enterprise lessons we’re doing in class. This was a great opportunity for us as the university arranged this day for us for free. We left school at 9:10 and arrived at SCU at 9:30 we got off the bus and walked up the hill and to the bottom of the Enterprise Lab where we had fruit break. Then we met Tanya who was going to teach us for the day. She took us up to the Enterprise Lab and told us what we were going to do for the rest of the day. Then we got into our enterprise groups and sat at a table. We listened to Tanya talk to us about her icy pop business and what she was doing with it at the moment.

After that, Nada came in to talk to us about our strengths in enterprise she gave us some examples such as creativity and teamwork, then we wrote our strengths on a white board and went back to our tables. Then Tanya showed us how to use and draw an enterprise canvas. We then went through the steps of the canvas and covered it in sticky notes which we wrote down our ideas on.

Page 3: Clunes Public School Newsletter...S2 & S3 students had a brilliant time at Southern Cross University last Monday. Thank you to Ben Roche (SCU Coordinator & Sabine & Mile’s dad),

Then we went out to recess in the café next to the Enterprise Lab. When everyone was finished, we played a game that improved our teamwork skills on the multi-coloured carpet. Then we went through the last steps of the canvas and went out to lunch. When we were finished eating, we were separated into two groups the year threes and the year fives in one group and the year fours and the year sixes in the other. We were taken on a guided tour of the university and saw lots of the courses you can do when you are older. Then we got back on the bus and went back to school. Thank you to Mr Priestley, Mrs Hutchinson and Matt for organising and supervising the day. Thank you to Tanya, Nada and the Enterprise Lab team for a great day full of learning and excitement.

Class 1-2 Information Reports Class 1-2 have been writing information reports as part of their writing lessons. Here are a couple of examples of their work. The Blue Whale - An Information Report By Lola Blue whales have to take a breath and then they go back down and keep on swimming. Blue whales are mammals because they give milk to the calves so they can live. Blue whales are 100 feet long – that’s how big they are when they are an adult. Blue whales can’t live in cold water. They have to swim a long way to find warm water. Blue whales have no teeth. They get their food and they spit the water out of their mouth. The Blue Whale - An Information Report By Reuben The classification of blue whales is the blue whales are baleen whales. They breathe air off the surface. They are a mammal and they are warm blooded. The features are that the calves when they are born weigh 5 tons. They grow one hundred feet long or thirty metres. They weigh more than the biggest dinosaurs. They have baleen that are like a strainer. The habitat is they live under the ocean. They live in the Antarctic Ocean then they migrate into the tropical waters. Their diet is two tons of krill a day. They feed their babies milk. The mother also gives the baby whales blubber.

The whale’s reproduction is they give birth to young babies and they feed them. They get bigger and they go down to the cold bit and swim back to the warm bit. The history of uses is that they were killed to make oil and they put chemicals in the oils to make petrol. They eat whales in Japan. The Blue Whale - An Information Report By Miles The classification on blue whales is the blue whale is baleen, that means, it has strainers in its throat. The blue whale is warm blooded. The blue whale is a mammal. A mammal is an animal that feeds their babies milk. The blue whale needs to go to the surface to breathe. The features of a blue whale are the blue whale can reach one hundred feet long when the blue whale is fully grown. When the calves are just born, they can weigh up to five tons. The blue whale is the largest animal on the earth. The habitat of the blue whale is the blue whale lived in the cold ocean. The blue whale goes to the warm ocean to birth their babies. Save the Date – Saturday 17th August at 6.30pm. The P&C are excited to announce we are holding a Trivia Night next term - a fun night for the adults and many great prizes will be on offer. Anna Douglass – President

This week at COOSH we made two versions of damper, one following our traditional recipe, and the other dairy and gluten free.

Unfortunately, the latter was not a great success as Mandell rightly concluded, “Way too much rice flour”. However, it was fun experimenting and we’ve got a solution for the next baking batch, having learned the secret of mixing different types of flour from Cassandra to create the perfect wheat substitute. We learned a new game from Thailand called ‘Len Choa’ which Miles and Archie picked up quickly; and flew paper aeroplanes which the children decided to make as we

discussed our Quality Improvement Plan with them. Thank you to all those parents who have been reading each Quality Area of the plan and commenting at pick up. By the end of this week we will be

up to Quality Area 4, so only 3 to go folks! For the next two weeks there will not be COOSH news, as I am having minor surgery and will be taking sick leave. However Tom, Sophia and Laura will be coordinating at after school care and then I should be able to hobble back on crutches to catch up with the office tasks and news.
