Hello all! First and foremost congratulations and welcome to UCC. My name is Daniel Moloney and I am the Clubs Executive President for the 2019/20 academic year. The Clubs Executive work alongside the Department of Sport and Physical Activity to ensure the strong sporting heritage in UCC is maintained and continues to thrive from year to year. Sport is a huge part of college life here, on and off campus, and is a fantastic way to meet new people and try new things.

We have a total of 56 clubs here in UCC so there really is something for everyone. From Hurling to Skydiving, there are dozens of options, to try something new or to continue with a sport you already love. Personally I spent most of my time in the Rover Scouts and Archery Clubs and they provided me with some of the most rewarding experiences and important friendships for my four years in UCC. Without the support of the people I met through clubs and without the opportunity to de-stress from college at club events, I would have found my college career a much different experience.

Whether you know what clubs you are interested in or not come join us on September 10th for Clubs Day in Devere Hall, where you will be able to meet the students who run the clubs, ask questions and sign up. If there has always been a sport you have wanted to try and never gotten a chance or whether you stumble across something you have never heard of before and think it sounds interesting, I can guarantee there will be something here for you.

UCC has a proud sporting tradition which started back in the 1800s. In 1880 the famous skull and crossbones was adapted by medical students joining the rugby team and over time the symbol has come to be recognised worldwide as a symbol of sporting excellence. With the launch of our new Sport Strategy in 2019 our focus going forward will be to ensure the future of UCC sport on a local, national and international scale.

UCC clubs cater for all levels of athletes from those who simply want to give something new a try from week to week, to those who go on to compete and win at a

national and international level. Clubs try to incorporate all aspects of social, physical and competitive life into the events and trainings that are run from week to week. If I can give any piece of advice to those of you just starting out in college it is to remember that while the academic side of college is important, it is not all that is out there. Make sure to take enough time for yourself to maintain both your physical and mental health.

To help you in doing this there are many facilities available to you where you can burn off some energy or simply work out to clear your head. We are extremely fortunate here in UCC with the sports facilities we have. Just a five minute walk from campus is the Mardyke Arena which every UCC student has access to. The arena has some of the best sports facilities in the county catering for both indoor and outdoor sports including Rugby and GAA pitches, water based synthetic pitches, the outdoor and indoor running tracks, indoor climbing wall, an indoor sports hall, twenty-five meter swimming pool and a variety of indoor gym facilities.

As well as the Mardyke Arena, UCC also has ‘The Farm’, 55 acres of pitches near Curraheen containing a variety of pitches for outdoor sports. UCC are also currently in the process of developing a new state of the art Sports Park to ensure the continuing success and improvement of our outdoor clubs.

For more information on each individual club you can find all you need at sport.ucc.ie or follow the UCC Sport social media @UCCSport. If you have any questions that you can’t find the answer to please email [email protected] for help.

So once again welcome to UCC and I hope each and every one of you will enjoy the next few years of your college life and don’t forget to come find us in Devere Hall on the 10th September for Clubs Day.

Le gach dea-ghuí,Daniel Moloney.

CUH Charity: Children’s Appeal UCC Health Matters

For the past four years, CUH Charity Children’s Appeal have been the official charity partner of the UCC Clubs Executive. During this time, an outstanding sum of approximately €23,000 was raised for the charity through the tireless work of club members, fundraisers and special events. For the coming year, the Clubs Executive decided to continue to support the charity - with it being such a worthy cause, and the impact the hospital has locally, it wasn’t a hard decision to make.

Cork University Hospital is the largest teaching hospital and the only Level 1 Trauma Centre in the country with over 40 different medical and surgical specialties. Within the hospital, the Children’s Unit is one of the busiest in Ireland, providing care to 30,000 children annually from 2 days old to 16 years of age. Specialist care is provided for children with cystic fibrosis, diabetes, neurology and epilepsy, endocrinology and allergy, as well as providing care for children with a broad range of medical and surgical conditions.

However, CUH was built in 1978 and has become very outdated and desperately in need of refurbishment in order to allow the unit to continue to care for children with acute and chronic illnesses. The construction of Phase 1 on the refurbishment of the Children’s Unit has been completed, which provides a new two-storey extension, transforming the Unit into a single centre of excellence incorporating an extensive range of specialist services. However, support is still needed for Phase 2, which will provide a new state of the art 80 bed inpatient unit.

UCC Clubs Executive 2019/2020 is very proud to continue to support CUH Charity Children’s Appeal so that CUH can carry on providing outstanding care to children from all over the Munster region. For more information on the appeal, please visit http://cuhcharity.ie/cuh-childrens-unit-appeal/. Don’t forget to get involved in fundraising activities throughout the year, or you can donate online through the CUH Charity website with “UCC Sport” in the message box.

UCC was the first university in Ireland to be recognised as a Health Promoting University in 2015. UCC Health Matters is a student-staff collaborative group, working to sustain that title by promoting university-wide health and wellbeing across six action areas:

Food, Nutrition and Sustainable Development - Alcohol & Substance Misuse - Mental Health & Wellbeing - Sexual Health - Physical Activity & Active Transport – Built Environment and Safety

Each action area has a working group and we are always looking for students to join in, so whether you’re interested in health, would like to make a change to university policy, or enjoy organising events, this is a great way to gain valuable experience during your time in UCC.

Last September saw the launch of Be Well @ UCC, a new year-round health and wellbeing initiative. There are hundreds of events taking place in UCC each year such as Health Matters Day, Mental Health Week, Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance Week, Staff Wellbeing Day and Desk to 5K to name but a few. Be Well @ UCC will bring all of these types of events together in a “one-stop-shop” calendar of events. Keep an eye on our social media for more info!

Our annual Health Matters Day will take place in September and will be a day choc-full of activities and freebies so be sure to pop up and join the fun!

We need you!! The Welfare Crew has been a collaboration between UCC Health Matters and the SU Welfare Officer for several years and we are now looking for new recruits for the 2019/20 year. As part of the Welfare Crew you will:

• Make new friends with students who have similar interests to you

• Help your fellow students out when they need some support

• Get to know UCC and the various student services on and around campus

• Get involved with organising and running welfare and health promotion events and campaigns in UCC

• Improve your confidence, organisation, public speaking skills, team work skills

• Do something that makes your CV stand out to employers

• Complete various FREE training courses covering health related topics

To get involved in a working group or to join the Welfare Crew, email Sam and Aileen at [email protected] and don’t forget to follow us on social media to see what we’re up to and get involved with our events and competitions.

Each year a variety of scholarships are awarded to talented students who show potential across a variety of sports. These scholarships aid students in achieving success in both their academia and sporting lives. There are a variety of scholarships that can be applied for, from the high performance Quercus scholarships to a number of different scholarships provided for our four core sports; Rugby, Soccer, GAA and Hockey. As well as the specific core sports there are the general sports scholarships that can be applied for by anybody with a talent in any recognised sport.

In 2018/19, UCC awarded the following sports scholarships:

• 9 Quercus Sports Scholarships

• 48 UCC Sports Scholarships

• 3 Roy Keane Soccer Scholarships

• 4 MJ Dowling Hurling Scholarships

• 1 Jonathan Herlihy Memorial Scholarship

• 1 Jason Foley Memorial Scholarship

• 3 Greenstar Scholarships

• 3 Bank of Ireland Scholarships

• 2 Mycro Scholarships

• 19 GAA Munster Council Bursaries

UCC has revamped its sports scholarship scheme for 2019/20. The scholarships provided will now be divided up into bronze, silver and gold levels with different benefits and requirements at each level. This allows for more diversity in the scholarships provided and can allow those who may not play at a national level but do have potential, to access assistance upon starting in UCC. For full details on all scholarships including application dates and criteria go to the scholarships page on the UCC Sport website at sport.ucc.ie/scholarships/. Successful applicants will be expected to take part in UCC club activities of their chosen sport.

AWARDSStudent Sport Ireland Awards

Volunteer recruitment

After achieving success with both the Club Person of the Year award and the Competitive Event of the Year award at the annual UCC Club’s awards, UCC Trampolining were nominated for two further awards at the annual Student Sport Ireland networking event.

Ciara Judge, captain of UCC Trampoline and Tumbling and Quercus Scholar, was nominated for the Student Leadership Award in recognition of her time and effort spent ensuring the success and efficient running of her club. As well as her individual nomination, the Trampoline Club were also nominated for the SSI’s Event of the Year Award for the Irish Trampoline Intervarsity held in the Mardyke Arena in 2019.

Deputy Director of Sport, Christine O’Donovan, presented for the Student Leadership Award on behalf of Ciara and both Ciara and her vice-captain, Aoife Collins, presented on behalf of the Trampoline Club for Event of the Year. At the conference dinner later that evening the winners were announced and in a great turn of events, UCC were the recipients of both awards. Both Ciara Judge and UCC Trampoline made all those involved in UCC Sport very proud for showing those in other colleges and institutions how sport makes up a cornerstone of life for UCC students.

If joining a club sounds interesting but you don’t feel like you are suited to the physical demands it might take, there are other ways that you can help. If you would like to get involved and spend some time getting to know new people and help out then there are plenty of clubs who would benefit from you working with them off the pitch. So no matter what your strength is, from social media to finances and figures to coaching to organising events, there’s a role for you.

Joining a club committee is a great way to get involved in college activities outside the lab or classroom. It will also look very good on your CV, while potential employers do check how people’s grades were they

also look at the person’s willingness to branch out and try different things. Why not link it with the UCC Works programme and have your work with a UCC club recognised. As seen on the next page, the UCC Works programme is a highly beneficial extra-curricular award that can help you stand out from the crowd and give you a little something extra on your final university transcript.

If you would be willing and interested to give an hour or two of your time a week to help ensure one of our clubs has an extra pair of hands and can work even more efficiently please contact Daniel at [email protected] for more information. “Many hands make light work“.

Aikido Athletics

ArcheryAussie Rules

Aikido is a sport that embraces the philosophy of non-violence by providing practitioners with techniques which focus on neutralising the force and aggression behind any attack, without resorting to brute force or highly injurious tactics. Aikido focuses on detecting the direction and force behind an attack and how this can be redirected. The UCC Aikido Club has been running since October 1991, operating under the simple philosophy of providing a responsible source of Aikido, committed to the development of its students in an atmosphere of mutual respect, friendship, and learning.

‘Since starting Aikido with the UCC club, I have gained so much; everyone is very friendly and good humoured! I have come away with skills that make me more confident and aware. It is a great workout and great for body awareness and there is always a nice stretch involved. I would recommend the UCC Aikido club to anyone, it ticks so many boxes and the expertise of the trainers are amazing’ Our captain Eric Kavanagh.

UCC Aikido train in the Mardyke Arena where beginners are welcome all year around. If you have any questions about the club, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

A big hello from the Athletics Club! As one of the biggest clubs in UCC, we take part in a wide range of events throughout the year - indoor and outdoor track competitions, cross country and road relays are the main events we have each year. The club caters for all experience and levels and has a number of qualified coaches who will help you with whatever your personal goals might be. We have members that have won national titles and represented their country internationally, and also lots of members who are involved purely for the social aspect. Rest assured, no matter what your level of experience or your degree of fitness, you will find a group that works for you.

The club trains on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm at the Mardyke track and newcomers are always welcome. If you have no experience with athletics but would like to get started, we recommend you come down, have a chat, try a few different groups and just see what clicks for you. There are plenty of opportunities to represent UCC throughout the year and you will get to travel all around the country for races and training events if you decide to join. There will also be no shortage of social events where you can get to know the members a bit better off the track. We have plenty of weekends away throughout the year where we always manage to find the right balance between hard work and good craic.

If you want to meet new people in a relaxed environment while keeping fit, this club is the one for you. Similarly, if you are a serious runner who wants to improve performance over the next few years, there are plenty of resources available to help you achieve this goal. Just pop down to the Mardyke and on Tuesdays or Thursdays and join the madness, you’ll never look back.

The UCC Archery Club was established in 2010. With the club hosting an annual national competition - National Student Indoor Championships - and participating in intervarsities across the country, it has been hugely successful since its foundation. This past year the club won multiple medals including silver in the Recurve Advance Women category through the countrywide intervarsities and bronze in the same category at Nationals.

Archery is open to students of all levels with both beginner and intermediate training sessions. All archers, whether new or experienced, will receive help and advice from our coaches to improve their skills. There is always a great atmosphere at training and it is a good opportunity to meet new people and make friends. Everybody in the club is welcoming and more than willing to help if you are having any difficulties. As well as this, all equipment is provided, so there is no need to worry about any expense.

At beginner training sessions, in a relaxed setting, we host seasonal competitions with prizes for the winners. These competitions usually take place at Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter. This is a good way to keep track of your progress and can be gratifying and instill self-confidence. All funds raised from these competitions are donated to the CUH Children’s Charity.

We also run a Beginner’s Course where new archers are invited to intermediate training sessions to further their progress in the sport. It consists of 6 weeks of coaching, resulting in a qualification recognised by Archery Ireland (the national body). This certificate allows you to train and compete with other archery clubs outside of UCC. This is a great opportunity to become more involved with the club and to compete in student competitions.

Overall, the archery club is a great place to hang out, have a good time and try something new!

UCC Australian Football Club (UCC Aussie Rules) was founded in 2012. Starting from a few players just having a kick about, it has expanded rapidly since then into the largest club in the land, with the two teams playing across a variety of national and international competitions.

The Bombers are the men’s team, and have been the most successful club in the relatively brief history of Intervarsity’s Aussie Rules. The Crusaders are the women’s section and since their formation in late 2016 they too have dominated the field.

What is Aussie Rules? The easiest description is that it’s a cross between Gaelic Football and Rugby. With tackling, high-fielding and running, the game is fast and physical. With no goalkeepers, the ball is almost constantly in play.

We take in lots of new players every year so we teach the game from a beginner level at our weekly training sessions. Training has retained the original atmosphere of craic and fun that the club was created with! Running laps is nowhere to be seen here, the focus is on the skills of the game. After refining their skills at training, members regularly meet outside training hours for a kick about.

The club encourages its members to play the game at the highest level. Numerous members have received a

call up to the Irish National Teams, the Warriors and the Banshees, and represented their country across the globe. Notably there was a strong contingent in the inaugural International Varsity match against England.

The club enters teams in a variety of domestic and international tournaments. The Fitzpatrick Cup is the largest and most prestigious competition with both UCC teams being the current champions.

It’s through the trainings, competitions and nights out that friendships are forged and the strong team bond is created.

Badminton Boxing

Camogie

Basketball

UCC Badminton Club pride ourselves in being a welcoming, all-inclusive club suitable for members of all levels. We now have 12 teams playing competitively in the Cork Leagues and Cups, as well as the Munster championships, meaning we are now one of Cork’s biggest clubs. We had 60 players affiliated with Badminton Ireland last year, which means these players could play in competitions across Ireland. We had 400 sign-ups for clubs day last year, which we are very proud of, and hope to see again!

Our players have been very successful this year. We have had multiple players competing on the Cork County teams in various divisions, who qualified for the All-Ireland Finals. UCC’s Nguyen Long won the All-Ireland Division E singles, our Division 3 Mixed Team brought home the Handicap Cup, and finally our A team won the 2019 Badminton Intervarsities.

Every year we host a charity tournament which is a great opportunity for all players to get involved with the committee and have some fun. This year we had over 80 entries and raised over €1,250 for the CUH Children’s Charity.

There are four scheduled training times for the Club which take place in the playing halls in the Mardyke Arena;

Beginners: Mondays from 6.00-8.00pmMatch Night/Recreational: Tuesdays from 8.30-10.30pmTeam Training/Match Night: Wednesdays from 8.30-10.30pmRecreational: Saturdays from 12 – 2pm

Since we have a range of playing times for every level, you can choose what you want to get out of the club – a relaxed atmosphere at beginners and recreational training, or maybe some more intensity by trying out for one of the UCC Badminton Club teams. Badminton is a sport that can be played year round so it is a great hobby to pick up if you are on the off season of other sports.

Joining a club at University is not just about the act of playing the sport, it’s about who you meet and the memories you make. UCC Badminton Club is a place where everyone is welcome. We organise various socials and events throughout the year so that our members can get to know each other and make some lifelong friends. All the equipment needed will be provided for you, so what is stopping you from joining?

Looking to get fit, meet new people, or just try something new and exciting? UCC Boxing Club is open to boxers of all levels, whether you’ve been boxing for years or just want to try out a new sport.

We start training with a rigorous cardio session and move onto boxing drills. Sparring takes place nightly, but you won’t box unless you want to! We provide gloves and head gear, just bring along a towel, a water bottle and a gum shield if you intend on sparring. Every year the club competes in Novice Intervarsity Championships which take place in November and the National Intervarsity Championships in March. Our coaches Ken Anthony and Eoin Buckley have a wealth of experience in boxing and have coached many of our members to huge success in the Irish Intervarsities.

Our club provides a safe environment for students of UCC to learn and train the sweet science, whether your aim is to fight and compete for our team or simply for fitness and to learn about the sport. In the past academic year we had several gold medal wins in both Irish Third Level Competition as well as in the Birmingham University Box-Cup.

UCC Camogie Club is one of the oldest clubs in the existence of the Camogie Association, and have the proud record of taking part in the first ever intercollegiate camogie match against UCD on 18th April 1915. Since then, UCC has won 32 Ashbourne Cup Titles with their first success in 1919, and the most recent in 2003. The club has also won Purcell Cup titles (the second tier of the third level camogie competition) as recently as 2014. Impressively, UCC Camogie won six in-a-row in both the 1920s and the 1970s, the record for the longest reign in the history of the Ashbourne Cup competition. UCC also has the second highest amount of Ashbourne Cup titles out of all the colleges. Unfortunately in their pursuit of the Ashbourne Cup in 2019, UCC reached the final to be defeated by UL. They will be coming back stronger than ever this year with their eyes firmly set on Ashbourne glory.

Over the years, countless well-known names have donned the UCC skull and crossbones, with the senior team including many All-Star players. Bringing this element of skill to the team has undoubtedly helped UCC Camogie succeed, but it is the hard work and dedication of every player within the club that has really pushed them to new heights.

UCC Camogie is looking onwards and upwards to another year of training and competition. However it’s not just about sport, as the club also offers a great opportunity to meet new friends while practicing skills, keeping fit and just having fun. For more information, follow us on Facebook and Twitter or come visit us at Clubs Day on the 10th September.

Welcome back everyone! Hope you all had an amazing summer. After another amazing year of UCC Basketball we are all really looking forward to jumping straight back into it. This year we hope to have enough time slots and numbers to allow for some recreational basketball. Fear not though if this isn’t a possibility we still have teams suitable for everyone. For those more invested in Basketball there will be ‘A’ teams for both our lads and lassies. There definitely will be a “B” team for our girls but hopefully there will be enough for a lads one too! All teams train once a week in the Mardyke with matches starting off both home and away for our league teams in November. Any incoming freshers wanting to join there will be a girls and boys team set up in early September with a weekend tournament being held somewhere up the country in late November. Always a wild weekend make sure you do not miss out! You can then choose to join one of our league teams if you wish, I have no doubt you will all love it so much you won’t want to finish this early. All details on our try out times/training details will be posted on our Facebook page and sent out to our mailing list which you can sign up for online or at the club/socs day on Freshers week. The more of you reach out the better as we can set up more teams or look into other possible events etc. Looking forward to seeing you all soon for another fun year of basketball. Need any other information bounce over to our Facebook page or send us an email. Happy to help.30 31

Canoe Chess

Cricket Capoeira

What better way to break up a busy college week than heading out for a paddle on the river Lee? UCC Canoe Club is one of many jewels in the crown of UCC Sport. Our club caters for complete beginners as well as experienced kayakers, so even if you’ve never sat in a boat before, this club is a great way to try something different and meet a bunch of great people who are more than willing to teach and have a great time on and off the water.

We are proud to have placed third at the kayaking intervarsities 2019 and to have seen many successes at last year’s Galway Fest. We are eager to keep improving and keep adding to our list of accomplishments. With between 50 and 70 active members each year, we have a mix of tireless athletes training hard as well as our more relaxed paddlers whose main interest is the warm cup of tea after the river! In addition to Galway Fest and the Kayaking Intervarsities, we also take part in other competitive events, including the Munster Polo League and a Cork Race League which allows us to get to know students from other Universities and improve our kayaking skills.

However, it’s not all about competitions! With many long-standing traditions, events and weekend trips away, there’s never a dull moment in the club. Starting off with the annual JACKS weekend to Lahinch in October, many of us will admit we only ever intended to suss out one training session, but accidentally got hooked to the club and here we are now. Each of our socials helps to integrate and socialise new members with the older ones, and many people find true, lifelong friends from being a member of this club.

So why not come down to visit us? We are always accepting new members, but we do recommend joining in September to get a more immersive experience. We train twice weekly in the pool in the Mardyke Arena on Wednesdays at 10.15pm and on the river on Fridays, meeting at the Mardyke sheds at 2.15pm. Just come down, say Hi, and join in! Keep and eye on our social medias such as Facebook and Instagram (@ucccanoeclub) too for more information and if you have any questions, please feel free to send us a message!

UCC Chess club is a relaxed club environment that helps train skills such as concentration, patience, hand eye coordination, reaction times and other skills useful for any degree program and life ventures.

We like to involve everyone in committee activities and it is a good experience to learn how committees work with senior officers who will aid and teach necessary skills in a risk free environment.

We attend several tournaments in a year and provide funding for the annual mulcahy cup in Cork City, as a result we get free and discounted entries for anyone in the club. Tournaments are not mandatory, nor is prior knowledge of the sport, we welcome all who wish to attend and will help teach anyone who wishes to learn.

We meet weekly in the western gateway building however we do not expect that everyone will be able to attend every week and we are not strict on attendance, if you wish to play a game every now and then then feel free to attend, as UCC students the club is as much yours as it is anyone else’s.

Club membership is completely free, we often host our own events within the university which are completely free to attend as well. Our e-mail is [email protected] if you have any inquiries. With respect to tournaments our members have competed in events across the country such as the bunratty chess festival. Chess is a rewarding sport and well worth any time invested in it. We hope to see lots of new faces for the 2019/20 academic year.

UCC Cricket is one of UCC’s most diverse clubs. We have members from Cork to Chennai, Dublin to Dunedin and everywhere in between, all brought together by a collective passion for cricket. We play all year round, indoors (twice a week) between October and March and outdoors as soon as the weather begins to get better ideally starting from April. We compete in both the Indoor and Outdoor Intervarsity Championships. Additionally, the club actively competes in both the longer format (50 overs) and the shorter format (T20 cricket) of the outdoor tournaments. We have had great success in recent years in fielding a team in Munster Division 2 and the Cork T20 Cup. The club even hosted an internal T10 Indoor cricket tournament in March 2019 with approximately 30 people participating.

With the first record of a cricket match being played in the university dating back to 1866, cricket is steeped in the history of University College Cork. UCC Cricket Club in its current form was established in 1978/79 and there has been a cricket club at UCC since that year. As a club we are well-structured, well-organised and we ensure that all our members enjoy their time both on and off the field. We cater for both beginners and seasoned cricketers and one of our indoor sessions in Presentation Brothers School each week is dedicated to learning the basics of the game. The 2018-2019 session has been great for the club as almost 50 people joined the club that includes students, researchers as well as UCC staff. The club is always looking forward to welcome new members who can take the legacy of UCC cricket club forward. The club plans to expand its wings by procuring new equipment that will be beneficial for the members and elevate the overall level of the sport within the club.

As those who are acquainted with the sport will know, there is also a social element to cricket and that is certainly something we at UCC Cricket Club do not neglect.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements Martial Arts, Acrobatics, movement and Music. Initially developed as a method of resistance against oppression by slaves in Brazil, it has now grown and branched to the many different styles practiced around the globe, from the slow paced Angola to the more heavily acrobatic Regional.

Classes usually have a general structure but with Capoeira being such a loosely defined sport, those who join have absolute freedom to decide on any targets they want to achieve, be it gain strength, mobility or musical skill. What is taught here at UCC largely depends on student suggestions!

UCC Capoeira Club brings together all sorts of people in to a fun and supportive environment where they can develop their skills and physical abilities, all through creative movement! This club provides a space to work out as casually or as intensively as you want. We are always a mix of new beginners along with more experienced Capoeiristas. Capoeira by its design is a very social art form and so puts great emphasis on everyone helping and benefiting from each others presence!

Dance

Darts

Equestrian

Fencing

UCC Dance Club is dedicated to providing the best college dance experience for all of its members. Our club prides itself with being one which is open to all levels of dancers whether you are just looking to try something new, make friends, shake off a long day at college or if you want to improve your dance technique and dance competitively at a high standard in one of our teams.

UCC Dance Club provides both advanced and open classes in a range of styles including Irish Dance, Hip-hop, Jazz, and Contemporary and ballet as well as various other styles such as tango, heels, etc. for one-night workshops.

Along with our weekly classes we are a club that likes to get involved with College Events and performed routines at many college balls and fundraisers over the year. We enjoy collaborating with other clubs and societies such as on campus entertainment with An Chullacht and UCC STAR Society.

We love to use dance as a way to add some purpose to our college experience, one way is by getting involved with raising money for charity. Last year UCC Dance were crowned UCC Club Charity Champions due to our never-ending resilient efforts to raise as much money as possible for charities. Our biggest charity event ‘So UCC Thinks it can Dance’ is now in its third year of running and this year raised 1500 euro for the CUH Children’s Ward. This event saw a variety of different clubs and societies, from the Pharm Soc to The Tennis Club, go head to head performing to be in with a chance of becoming crowned champions.

Like many other clubs in UCC, UCC Dance has a competitive element to it also in the form of the annual intervarsities. Last year this event was held in the national boxing stadium in Dublin hosted by TUD and was UCC Dance’s most successful year to date. We were lucky enough to come away with a first place in Contemporary, two second places in Jazz and Mixed piece, which is a combination of all styles of dance dancing together in one piece, and third place in the Irish dancing category. This success was due to the hard work put in by all our members but especially the relentless efforts put in by all our teachers.

Our End of Year showcase ‘UCC Goes Dancing’ in addition to raising money for our chosen charity – The CUH Children’s Ward, showcases not only our advanced teams but all of our open classes and features all of our styles.

We are a friendly, welcoming club where participation is key no matter your level or experience of dance! New faces are always welcomed!

UCC Darts Club was founded 11 years ago and has gone from strength to strength ever since. The club has grown in numbers over the last few years and is open to all players, beginners or otherwise! The club meets every Monday at 7pm in the New Bar and is set up for all standards of play.

We run an in-house league every week, culminating in a big finals night at the end of the year where we crown the UCC Darts Championship winner as well as giving out many other awards. The club also has its own team which competes in Division 2 of the CDPA league where we finished runners up last year. Given the increase in members we will also be entering a team in Division 4 of the CDPA league. This gives all members a chance in playing in a slightly more competitive manner in a sociable setting. The league games take place every Monday after the in-house league, either at home in the New Bar or away in a rival bar. With our membership in the CDPA we are also offered the opportunity to compete in a number of other singles, doubles, 3-a-side and team events that take place throughout the year.

New members don’t need to bring their own darts. If you want to come up and see what we have to offer or if you want more information or have any questions, don’t hesitate to check out our Facebook page, drop us a message or email us at [email protected]! We hope to see you in September!

UCC Equestrian Club is dedicated to all things equestrian and aims to promote and establish a network in UCC for all equestrian and riding enthusiasts. We compete in Tetrathlon every year, which compromises of running, swimming, shooting and riding and train for this in the first semester. In this years Tetrathlon we had two of our members take the first and third place medals in the women’s event while we also had another member take third place in the men’s event.

We also take part in Intervarsities in the second semester, where members choose to compete in showjumping, dressage or prix caprilli. This year we also expanded our competitive ability and sent two teams to compete in the polocrosse intervarsity cup where we came away with the first and third place medals on the day.

We do also like to have a bit of fun and organise various activities during the year such as pony club games, club social nights and trips to encourage everyone to get to know each other and hopefully make lifelong friends. We are proud to say that we have a great bond in the group and we love welcoming new members to the team! So don’t be shy - whether you’re a happy hacker or a pro, everyone is welcome to join the club. If you have any questions or would like to find out more about the club come and find us on Clubs Day in Devere Hall on the 10th of September or else just send us an email at [email protected].

UCC Fencing Club is one of the best fencing clubs in the country, currently placed 7th in the competitive national circuit. We provide a great environment for novices to discover the sport, priding ourselves on the warm and welcoming environment we have in training and at social events. Our club members vary from novices to more experienced fencers, with members given the opportunity to be as competitive or non-competitive as they like, with many just attending for the exercise and social aspect of the club. The club caters to people of all abilities and interests, providing students the opportunity to learn a new and exciting sport and make a lot of new friends along the way. As a club we put as much emphasis on enjoyment and the fun there is to be had in fencing as we do on competition and winning.

UCC Fencing club is one of the few clubs in Cork that gives people the opportunity to discover the wonderful sport that is fencing. One of the original Olympic sports, fencing is an exhilarating sport using bladed weapons. Modern Fencing is fast, athletic, and exciting.

The objective is to score as many points on your opponent as possible by touching them with the point of your blade. Score is kept using electronic scoring equipment with the help of a referee. There are 3 weapons used in the sport of Fencing: foil, épée and sabre. Each has their own unique set of rules and style, ensuring that there is a type of fencing for everyone to enjoy.

Since we are a UCC club we cater to UCC and Erasmus students and UCC staff members, providing a fun and safe atmosphere for people to participate. There are no

real costs involved in joining the club, since we provide all gear and equipment, and there are many opportunities throughout the year to travel and compete against many other fencers. UCC fencing club hosts the Schull Novice competition in November which allows new members to get a feel for the sport and the competitive side of it in a relaxed and fun environment.

Ask any of our members and I’m sure they’d recommend fencing as the club provides a great start into college life and it’s a brilliant opportunity to make friends and meet people you might not meet on your course. We pride ourselves on being friendly and welcoming to all, so definitely take the opportunity to drop in and give it a try. It could be the best decision you make all year.

Flag Football Gaelic Football

FutsalGolf

Flag Football returns to UCC for a third year! The sport has become increasingly popular and fast growing over the last few years. Flag Football is a non-contact variation of American football, played with 5 players on each team and replacing the tackle with the removal of a flag, similar to tag rugby.

Both male and female members are encouraged to join and no prior experience of any form is necessary as we will teach all the basics. This year the club will take part in the sixth season of the much expanded Emerald bowl competition, which includes teams from all over Ireland and runs from September to December. The club will also compete in many intervarsity and charity tournaments across the academic year. This year we are glad to announce that we have added a second team to compete in the Glas Bowl conference which is the second division of Irish Flag Football

We enjoyed much success in these tournaments last year and we are looking to build on that this year with a strong team. Members who do not wish to play in competitive games are equally welcome to those who are looking to compete for a national title this year.

If you are interested in being the Irish Tom Brady or Antonio Brown, please feel free to contact us by email or on any of our social media pages listed below and we would be more than happy to provide any further information on the club or answer any queries that you may have.

Gaelic Football is one of the most popular sports in Ireland and, here in UCC, that is no different. There are five teams in the college which consist of two fresher’s teams as well as a Senior, Intermediate and Junior team. All levels are catered for so whether you want to play at the highest level and compete for the Sigerson Cup or just want to get a bit of extra training in, come along and try out.

UCC Gaelic Football has a rich tradition in third level competitions. Having won the Sigerson Cup 21 times since the competition started, UCC can certainly hold its own at the highest level in third-level football. In 2016, UCC Gaelic Football reached the semi-final stage of the Sigerson Cup, losing out by the narrowest margins to St. Mary’s College Belfast who were the eventual winners. UCC Gaelic Football also compete in the Cork Senior Football Championship and have won the title ten times, most recently in 2011. The UCC Gaelic Football team achieved a huge victory this year when they defeated St Mary’s, Belfast in the Sigerson Cup final. This led to them achieving half of the historic double win of Sigerson and Fitzgerald. This unique double was last won in 1988 when UCC won out in both cups.

UCC Gaelic Football is looking forward to another great year in 2019/20, where we hope you will join us. For more information and to keep up to date with training and fixtures, follow us on Facebook and Twitter and don’t forget to come visit us at Clubs Day on the 11th September!

UCC Futsal club is a small club which was created 2 years ago. This year will be our third year together and during our short reign our club has enjoyed some success while competing against the best futsal universities in Ireland. During the college year there are two main competitions in which we strive to compete in (Regionals and Nationals). Our club is guaranteed to play in at least one competition with this being the Regionals. In order for our club to reach Nationals, which is the biggest futsal competition of the year, we must win Regionals in order to progress to Nationals. In the past 2 years since our club came together, in our first year together we won regionals and progressed to Nationals in which we came 4th. Last year, we reached the Regional Finals against a very tough opposition in IT Carlow who beat us 4-2 in the final and ended up winning Nationals.

Our aim for the upcoming year remains the same for our ever growing club. As we look to rebuild our team in what we hope will be our most successful year as a club, we are excited for what lies ahead. Our club trains twice a week for 2 hours each session. Each training consists of high paced workouts in which we try our very best to prepare each individual for tournament level. We set our standards very high and our club requires commitment from every individual. Whilst we are serious in our preparation for tournaments and glory, our club is also a club in which you are guaranteed to have fun. Our committee members are

easy going, friendly and just normal students like yourselves so if you are looking for somewhere to go for 2 hours to clear your head, play ball, have a laugh and have a good time, UCC Futsal is the club for you regardless of what level you are at. Everybody is welcome at our club and we would be pleased to have you come play and train with us. We also have a number of exciting events this year in which we cannot wait to share with you guys throughout the year including the possibility of going on a trip outside of Ireland to play some futsal matches. All is to be discussed and confirmed within the coming months, so we hope to see as many of you as possible in September to become part of what we believe is going to be a very successful year for us!

UCC Golf Club caters for all levels of golfers ranging from beginners to Irish Internationals and our aim is to get as many people playing golf as we can! Whether you’re new to the game or are looking to take your game to the next level UCC Golf offers a great range of activities that help you improve and meet new friends.

We compete at national level in Intervarsity and student championships in both matchplay and Strokeplay. These events take place at some of Ireland’s best courses which give you a chance to test all facets of your game. In recent years we have had great success in these events highlighted by Sean Desmond winning this year’s Munster Students competition and Ben Murray coming second at the Irish Intervarsity’s in 2017.

We also organise the annual Winter League matchplay series which is played against our neighbours CIT at various golf clubs around Cork. This is a great event that gives golfers a chance to play competitively throughout the winter months while also meeting new people from around Cork. We also run internal competitions and social events for golfers without registered playing handicaps, such as the Internal stableford competition and our 9-hole social tournament. There were great prizes available and great fun was had by all.

Last year we also went on a warm weather training trip to Spain for 4 days where we prepared for the upcoming season and played the European champions UGPM (University Golf Program Malaga), narrowly losing to them 4.5-3.5.

Come see us at Clubs Day during fresher’s week and sign up for an action-packed year with our great club! We cater for all levels and If you have any interest in golf at all come and get involved in all these great events where you can meet fellow college golfers!

Handball Hurling

Inline Hockey Hockey

Handball is perhaps one of the lesser known sports within the GAA and yet is arguably the most skillful. Handball can be played as singles or doubles, and is played on a court similar to squash called an “alley”. Here in UCC Handball Club, we welcome both complete beginners and seasoned players. With a strong cohort of talented players, it is a great opportunity for beginners to get involved and to benefit from the coaching and expertise of current UCC players who play at top intervarsity, inter-county and provincial levels. A select number of players have played at a highly competitive level overseas in the USA and have great insights into the game which they are more than happy to share with players starting off.

Opportunities with the club include being eligible to play at three different intervarsities during the academic year whilst also getting the chance to learn a new sport and partake in the many social outings the club organises during the year. UCC Handball believes it is never too late to start a new sport, so come along and give it a try! The unique thing

about handball is that there’s always someone at your level and all players get to play at least three games at the big tournaments across the year.

UCC Hurling is one of the oldest clubs in UCC, proudly wearing the famous Skull and Crossbones when we represent the college on the playing field. The UCC Hurling Club plays for one of the most famous trophies in GAA, the Fitzgibbon Cup, which is the premier competition in hurling between Higher Education Institutions. UCC are currently top of the roll of honour with 42 titles. The Fitzgibbon Cup is named after Edwin Fitzgibbon who was a former lecturer in philosophy in UCC. This year UCC hurlers achieved a remarkable joint double with UCC Gaelic footballers by securing the Fitzgibbon cup. UCC defeated Mary I in the cup final to bring home the Fitzgibbon for the 42nd time. This means UCC have achieved the unique Sigerson and Fitzgibbon double, last seen in 1988 when UCC last brought home both cups.

UCC Hurling caters for all grades so everyone is welcome and there is a role for whoever is interested, whether you’re looking to touch up on your hurling skills or are playing at an elite intercounty level. There are currently six teams in the college; a senior, intermediate and junior team, as well as three fresher teams.

UCC has always been very competitive across the board and also competes in the Cork Senior Hurling Championship, winning the title twice.

Having been set up in the 1990s, the UCC Inline Hockey club offers students a unique sporting experience. Inline Hockey is a non-contact sport, very similar to ice hockey but played on roller-skates. Here at UCC Inline Hockey we teach beginners to skate, advance our improvers and try to challenge our more experienced players. We skate, jump, sprint and fall (a lot). At trainings, we play not only hockey, but attempt soccer, basketball, badminton and volleyball on skates.

For those who like fast paced and intense play, or slow and well thought out decisions, inline hockey is a sport open to all, catering to all levels of interest in sport. While being able to roller-skate is a great benefit, our experienced members are happy to help all new club members learn the ropes of the game and skating.

While our club is mostly recreational, if there is enough skilled players and demand, we enter our team UCC Skulls in the Irish Senior League, where we play against teams all over Ireland. For our rookies, we try to organise an event each year, ranging from an In-Club tournament, a trip to play another team (we’ve gone to Galway, London and Longford in recent years!) or invite other teams to play a friendly match. Along with all this there is regular training, trips to the ice rink at Christmas and lots of other fun events.

We train twice a week on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Pres Hall, on Dyke Parade, just off Western Road. We look forward to meeting all new members this semester. Feel free to contact the club with any questions you may have by email at [email protected]. Just remember, keep calm and play hockey.

UCC Men’s Hockey Club is made up of three teams catering for all levels and abilities, from the elite athlete with international caps, to the social player looking to have some fun and

keep active including those new to the sport. The club competes in Munster Divisions 1, 2 and 3 as well as competing nationally in the Irish Senior and Junior Cups, and the Irish Hockey Trophy. UCC MHC was one of the clubs in the newly formed EY Hockey League Division 2 having qualified the season previous to represent Munster. We were one of only three Munster clubs to compete in the national leagues last season.

The flagship weekend in the college hockey calendar is the Annual Irish Inter-Varsity Cup which takes place over the October Bank Holiday weekend and is hosted by a different college each year. The weekend offers students the opportunity to get to know players from other colleges and in 2018 UCC MHC just missed out on a Cup Final spot after a narrow loss in the semis.

Each team has on pitch training twice a week with squad gym sessions running every other week day. Most matches usually take place at the weekend with a break over the Christmas period. All training and home matches take place in the Mardyke Sports Grounds, a world-class facility that has hosted numerous international matches and competitions in the last few years. It is one of only two water based pitches in Munster and is used by the Irish Senior Men and Women’s teams in the lead up to major competitions as well as the Irish Underage Regional Squads.

Off the field, we host a wide range of social events, with club nights out held frequently throughout the year. The annual Christmas Party and Hockey Ball are held in conjunction with the Ladies Hockey Club and are eagerly anticipated by all! We are constantly looking to recruit new players and pride ourselves in being extremely inclusive and welcoming to all. Currently we have a vast range of members of different nationalities, both young and old.

We would encourage anyone interested to contact us at [email protected], or on any of our social media accounts. We will also be present at Clubs Day with a sign-up sheet and will be happy to answer any questions.

Judo Karate

Jujutsu

Kickboxing

Judo is a grappling martial art and Olympic sport, the aim of which is to throw your opponent onto their back, pin them for twenty seconds or submit them by either applying a joint lock or choke. Judo greatly improves physical fitness, strength, flexibility and coordination, as well as teaching discipline and relieving stress. Judo is great for anyone looking to get fit, learn self defense or just have fun.

UCC Judo club provides a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere to safely learn and practice Judo, under the guidance of 4th Dan Black belt and sports Ireland level 2 coach, David Holmes. Since being re-founded in 2012, UCC Judo club has gone from strength to strength, regularly winning medals in competitions. We take part in a variety of competitions throughout the year including the Munster and Galway Open. The highlight of the year, however, is the intervarsities, which is a competition between collegiate Judo clubs for all levels and grades. It is hosted by a different college every year and is a great opportunity for members to socialise with each other and members of other colleges. Our most notable success in competition in recent years is our Women’s Team who have won gold in intervarsities for the last four years in a row with our other members also winning medals in a range of other categories. We hope to continue this successful streak into the new year and the years to come.

During the past few years, international students have played an enormous role in developing the club, both on and

off the mat. International students are always welcome to join and testimonies from previous Erasmus students are available to read on the club’s website.

For those who would like to get more involved with the club there are still a few committee positions left to be filled. If you want to run for a position you can come along to our EGM, the details of which can be found on our Facebook page. Details of each available position will be posted, but if you have any questions, feel free to message the page or ask any of our current committee members at training.

Beginners and new students are always welcome. We train on Mondays from 8:30 to 10:00 and Wednesday 9:00 to 10:30 in Hall 1. All that’s needed to start is tracksuit pants and a t-shirt. We also hold self defense classes throughout the year. These classes require no experience of martial arts and are open to all UCC students and details will be posted on our Facebook page.

Karate Club is one of UCC’s martial arts clubs. Here, we practice Shotokan karate under a skilled sensei. Our club is a lot more relaxed than a traditional dojo, and we’re sure to have fun as well as train to move up in our karate gradings (where we get our next coloured belt). We aim to have gradings every year. We also have a beginners’ class every year to go through the basic moves, and hopefully to get them their first belts!

Everyone learns at their own pace in this club, and we encourage anyone who’s curious about the traditional martial arts to join, and develop their own interests within the club. Whether you’re interested in sparring and competitions, or you’d prefer to just focus on learning technique, there’s a place for everyone. We usually train twice a week. As well as all the training, we also like to have some socials throughout the year, so that we can get to know one another.

Last year we entered two competitions, the Mixed Martial Arts competition in CIT and the Intervarsities in Dublin (DCU). We had medal winners in multiple categories in both competitions. The competitions consist of kata (movement and technique) and kumite (sparring). As well as this, many of our members received new belts through the year, which are officially registered with the Karate Federation.

“Jū Jutsu” can be translated to “gentle art” and represents manipulating the opponent’s force against them rather than resisting it with one’s own force. Jujutsu, westernized as jiu-jitsu, was developed as a method for defeating an armed and armored opponent without a weapon, or only with the use of a short weapon, to combat the samurai of feudal Japan. Because striking against an armored opponent proved ineffective, practitioners learned that the most efficient methods for neutralizing an enemy took the form of pins, joint locks, and throws.

There are many forms and derivatives of jujutsu, including traditional and Brazilian; the one practiced in UCC is German jujutsu. Developed in Germany in the 1960s using techniques from jujutsu, judo, karate and various other traditional and modern martial arts, German jujutsu includes atemi, elbow techniques, kicks, knee strikes, throws, ground techniques (taken from judo), various locks, pressure points, and armed techniques, among others, covering all distances. Training includes defense against multiple opponents.

German jujutsu is a bit of an all-rounder when it comes to martial arts and is perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to defend themselves, while keeping active as well as make a few friends. Whether you’re a master or a complete beginner, you are more than welcome to come on down to our dojo and say hi!Email: [email protected]: UCC Jujutsu Club

UCC Kickboxing Club is the largest martial arts club in UCC. The club operates under the KBI (Kickboxing Ireland) and our members have gone on to represent the university at both national and international levels. At our training sessions you can get the opportunity to try continuous and point sparring and also learn useful self-defence techniques.

2018 has been a brilliant year for the club. We took home over 25 medals from the Intervarsities held at CIT and several of our fighters went on to take part in the Irish Open in Dublin. Whilst it’s always amazing to see our club members take part in competitions, UCC Kickboxing Club is first and foremost a place where you get the opportunity to push yourself and do whatever makes you feel comfortable, whether that involves sparring or just taking part to improve your mental and physical health.

Here at UCC Kickboxing Club, we believe that kickboxing is for everyone, regardless of experience. Our training sessions are open to everyone, from absolute beginners to seasoned fighters. Here you can learn new techniques, improve your fitness and most importantly make new friends. We try our best to make sure that everyone feels welcome at our club and our social events outside of training and competitions are a great way to get to know the committee as well as meet fellow club members.

We as a club are passionate about giving back to the wider community outside of UCC Clubs and Societies and each year UCC Kickboxing Club hosts a fight night to raise money for a chosen charity. This is always an incredibly fun night for everyone involved. Taking place in Devere Hall, the fight night features contestants from both our club as well as the other martial arts clubs in UCC going head to head in continuous sparring. Whether you’ve been training for years or simply for a few weeks, our fight night is a great way to get a taste for sparring, have some fun and help to raise money for charity.

So whether you want to learn how to fight, get active or simply take a break from college work, come to one of our training sessions and see for yourself the benefits of getting involved with UCC Kickboxing Club!

Kung Fu Ladies Gaelic Football

Ladies Hockey

Lacrosse

Hi! We’re UCC Kung Fu. So, you may have heard of Kung Fu before in movies like the Matrix or maybe any Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee movie. Well we train in the Fu Lung Chuan school of Kung Fu and strive to improve ourselves physically, mentally and spiritually. We use our skills to help us in all aspects of our lives, be it mental sharpness to help with exams or the ability to be able to defend ourselves against an attacker. As a result, the emphasis in our training is on improving our flexibility, strength and endurance. For our advanced classes we have weapons training in bow staff and nunchuks.

In Fu Lung Chuan there is no such thing as a typical class, with each being individually challenging and diverse - one night you could be doing kicks with Gaughan, the next maybe hardening with McSuibhne, followed, maybe on the weekend by a meditation session in the mountains after a nice hill walk, as we believe in diversity and what better place to clear your head then nature surrounded by the elements. We also run numerous social events throughout the year, including a “Movie Night” once a month where we get together and enjoy food and watch a Kung Fu movie. We also go on “Culture Nights” to experience Chinese culture, food and festivals.

Last year was also our first year participating in the Martial Arts Intervaristy! We won the 1st and 3rd place in the Novice Kata demonstrations, and 2nd place in both the Male Intermediate Board Breaking and Female Advanced Board Breaking events! We can’t wait to go back this year and show what we’ve got now that we’ve some experience under our belts!

If any of this has interested you then come along to the Mardyke and you’ll see us in Studio 5 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00pm until 10:30pm!

Located in the centre of a county that has not only been one of the most successful teams in Ladies Gaelic Football, but in any code, in recent times, UCC Ladies Football Club has always been competitive in third level GAA competitions. Having the privilege of being home to All-Star players and inter-county stars, UCC Ladies Football is an extremely hard working club. Outside the competitive aspect of the sport, ladies Gaelic football is a sport that incorporates a huge amount of teamwork into the game, and is a sport that really builds a sense of community and team spirit among a team. So, whether you want to join the senior team or just want a bit of extra practice, UCC Ladies Gaelic Football is the club for you.

During the college year, the main competitive focus of the club is the O’Connor Cup, the premier third level ladies Gaelic football competition. In 2017, UCC Ladies Gaelic Football reached the final stage in the competition where they lost out to UL. UCC’s Doireann O’Sullivan was awarded Player of the Match in the final for her efforts.

UCC Ladies Hockey Club is a warm and welcoming club which caters for all abilities. We are the largest ladies hockey club in Munster and last year we welcomed over 180 enthusiastic freshers to the club.

The club has 6 competitive teams which compete in Divisions 1 to 6. The teams take part in a variety of competitions throughout the hockey season which include the Munster League and Cup in each team’s respective division, the Irish Junior and Senior Cup and the EYHL 2. Each team trains twice a week on our state-of-the-art based pitch in the Mardyke.

This season has marked significant progress across all divisions for our club with several teams competing for cup and league titles.

Our first team were runners up in the Munster Senior Cup in which they played a fantastic game against Catholic Institute. They also placed second over all in the Munster Senior League, therefore retaining EYHL 2 status for the upcoming season. This is a great achievement for both the girls and the club. Two of our first’s players and Quercus Scholars, Jenny Clein and Hannah Humphreys, are heavily involved in the Irish U21 Women’s Hockey team. We are incredibly proud of them here in UCC LHC.

Our seconds team were runners up in the Munster Junior Cup final against Cork Harlequins in April. The girls trained extremely hard throughout the season in order to get to the final and gave a very experienced and talented Harlequins team a great battle on the day.

Our fifths team were very successful this season as they did the double, winning both the Division 6 League and Cup. The girls and their coaches put in a massive amount of time and effort this season and reaped the rewards, gaining promotion to the Division 5 league for the following season.During the Christmas break, we participated in the annual Southern Fried Hockey U21 Tournament. The team was composed of girls from Division 1 through Division 3 and emerged victorious after an intense sudden death shootout against Cork Harlequins in the final. Not only did the girls take home silverware on the day, but Hannah Humphreys was awarded Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Emma Cripps was awarded Most Valuable Player.

We are really looking forward to welcoming the incoming freshers to the club in the coming season and can’t wait to see new faces down the Mardyke for preseason, which will commence at the beginning of August.

The lacrosse club in UCC is one of the universities newest clubs, being formed only in the past three years. We have enjoyed a very successful second season; we have seen the number of members growing and seen huge improvement among everyone. We’re looking forward to growing our club and seeing what we can achieve over the coming year.

The sport is still new in Ireland so the community is very close knit. We work with and regularly attend match days in other universities including UCD, NUIG and QUB. Our club is great if you want the opportunity to travel around Ireland and maybe in Europe should we be successful competitively.

We currently have one men’s and one ladies team. There is no previous knowledge or experience needed to join our club as we start our training at the basics and work our way up to being match ready! We welcome people of all abilities and talents. There is no need to be worried about fitness levels or natural talent as we all work together to achieve the best for each individual!

Feel free to bring your own gear if you have it, but we do have gear to loan to people if you need it. Ladies will need a gum shield in time for competitive matches and we also have ladies sticks to buy if you decide to keep up the sport.

We hope to see new faces at training this year and can’t wait to see what we can achieve together!Email: [email protected]: UCC Lacrosse

Ladies Rugby Made2Move

Mountaineering Ladies Soccer

UCC Ladies Rugby is a club that works hard both on and off the field. The club competes at a high level, but also likes to get involved in social events throughout the year. UCC Ladies Rugby always welcome new players, experienced or not. Each year, it is the new members that are key to the club’s success, the majority of which have never played rugby before.

Although not as long-founded as the men’s side of the club, UCC Ladies Rugby has gone from strength to strength, and continues to grow and develop each year. Over the past number of years the club has won Division 1 and 2 titles in the Intervarsity competition and reached the All Ireland Final stage of the SSI League Division 1 in 2016. UCC Ladies Rugby has also competed in international competitions in Europe, as well as competing in Rugby 7s, with plenty of overlap of ladies who play both 7-a-side and 15-a-side rugby for the college.

As always, we are looking for new talent to join our team, so whether you’re an experienced player or just want to try out a new sport, we have a spot for you. The UCC Made2Move club was established in 2018. The clubs focus is helping physically inactive students become more active in a relaxed and non competitive manner. It is open to all students from those who were active previously or those who would like to start being more active.

It is well proven that being active helps you feel better physically and mentally. It gives you more energy and helps you manage stress. It is recommended that all adults do 150 minutes of physical activity a week and the Made2Move club is based on helping students at UCC achieve this. Many students would like to be active but some may not know how to start or find a suitable routine for themselves. Also, many students find it difficult to manage the workload at university and making time for exercise. The Made2Move club provides the solution.

The club is made up of active students (MoveMentors) who guide, support and motivate inactive students (MoveMentees) to become more active. The MoveMentors are trained students who help MoveMentees create an individual exercise routine for themselves based on their preferred activity. The MoveMentors can exercise by walking or jogging with their MoveMentee and also accompany them to the gym or to fitness classes at the Mardyke.

The premise of the Made2Move club is to help students make physical activity part of their lifestyle and to establish a routine which they can maintain throughout their time at university.

Motivational and educational talks with guest speakers are organised throughout each semester. The subject matter of the talks are based on topics students will find interesting and inspiring.

Social activities where all members of the Made2Move club can meet are organised weekly. Each semester is completed with a charity activity such as a 5km walk/run.Overall the Made2Move club is one where support and guidance is provided for students at UCC to become more active in a non competitive manner with the focus being on being active for their health and wellbeing.

UCC Mountaineering Club is the perfect club to join if you are looking for a new way to explore Ireland. Our club is extremely active, we head out hiking all around Ireland no matter the weather. Rain or shine you will find us somewhere on the hills every Sunday during the semester. We cater for all levels so everyone is welcome to join regardless of experience and fitness levels. The hikes get progressively more difficult throughout the semester.

If you prefer climbing, we also have a very active group of climbers in the club. Every Monday (8.30-10.30pm) and Wednesday (7.30-9.30pm) there are club sessions at the Mardyke Climbing Wall, all levels are welcome, even if you are a beginner, there are always experienced members ready to show you the ropes and welcome you into the club!

Throughout the year we go on several trips, including an overseas climbing and hiking trip to Wales over Easter. Mountain skills courses along with other courses are also provided for those who would like to become more involved on our hikes. Weekly socials give everyone a chance to mingle outside the hiking and climbing, and our bowling night and Christmas party are not to be missed!

If you want to see what we get up to throughout the year follow us on instagram: uccmountaineering, or if you have any questions send us an email on [email protected] of find us on Facebook.

Have you played soccer for as long as you can remember or have you got the urge to suddenly take up soccer, do not panic whatever interest or experience you have we cater for all here in UCC Ladies Soccer. We currently have two teams but as a club we are always on the lookout for new members no matter what your ability may be. In UCC Ladies Soccer we have been lucky enough to experience some great games and tournaments over the last number of seasons. This year we achieved a huge success with a joint double win in senior soccer at the intervarsity level. With the ladies senior team winning the Kelly Cup and the men’s team winning the Collingwood Cup we have made history for the first time UCC have achieved the double in for the Soccer Clubs.

If you don’t like the whole idea of muckiness and cold weather usually associated with outdoor sports we can fix that, as each year we enter the WSCAI futsal competition which takes place in the dry and warm surroundings of a sports hall.

So why not come down and see what this club is all about. You will get some high quality coaching from our dedicated coaches. And along with making some new friends you may even reel back the years with a few familiar faces. If you have any questions or if you want to find out some more info contact us on Facebook, Twitter or email us at [email protected]

Olympic Handball Pool and Snooker

Olympic WeightliftingPowerlifting

Olympic handball is a fast paced, modern tactical team sport. It is one of the most popular sports in Europe, with millions of active handball players, and it is continuing to grow in Ireland due to the arrival of continental players. It is played by two teams of seven players each (six field players and a goalkeeper) by passing the ball around using only your hands with the aim of throwing it into the other team’s goal.UCC Olympic Handball Club (OHC) is one of the most successful handball clubs in Ireland and consists of a male team and a female team, both teams play the Irish Olympic Handball Association’s Senior League. Moreover, teams also compete in the IOHA cup, with the female team impressively finishing in third place last year.

The UCC OHC has members from all over the world and provides a great opportunity to meet new people, especially if you are new to Ireland. The club also regularly organises a variety of social events, which makes it easier to get to know everyone. We welcome people with all skill levels to join the club, from complete beginners to experienced player!

Feel free to ask any questions through email or social media, or just come along to our training sessions at the Mardyke Arena, Tue 4-6 pm and Fri 5-7 pm.

UCC Pool and Snooker Club was founded in the summer of 2017. Founded by Shane Kenneally, he came up with the idea for the club as he noticed a demand for the club. As students regularly took advantage of the pool services on campus and had no outlet for them to pursue their interests. Being an avid fan of pool and Snooker, Shane began the process in 2017 of setting up the Club within UCC.

While the first two years for our club was challenging we held training sessions every Wednesday in the mardyke entertainment complex where students could come and play games of pool or snooker. Advice on how to play would be offered from members of the committee and other students. During the year we also held our second annual pool tournament for members and non members of the Club and it was very well attended. It was great fun as it brought out the competitive side of people and students were able to show off their skills. We also had prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the tournament. Over the course of the year an AGM will be held where members of the club can run for various positions such as chairperson, PRO and other positions.

During the upcoming college year we hope to run more events and more tournaments, we also hope to enter to pool and snooker tournaments across Ireland and will be selecting members of the Club to represent us.

UCC Pool and Snooker Club is open to everyone whether you have experience playing or if you’ve never played before everyone is welcome. We post regular updates on our Facebook pages and via our email and we encourage club member feedback and participation over the course of the year.

The Olympic Weightlifting Club is for all those who enjoy strength training, athleticism and craic. What better way to rid yourself of stress than hurling your own body weight over your head, before hearing the oh-so satisfying boom of the weights hitting the platform.

As a sport, Olympic weightlifting involves competing in two movements, the Snatch, and the Clean and Jerk. These are the primary focus in training, which we complement with assistance exercises and copious amounts of flexibility work, not to mention everyone’s favourite - foam rolling.

For those who wish to compete, there are many competitions held annually, the biggest of which for the club being the Intervarsities. The club has seen much success in the intervarsities in previous years, taking home three gold medals in the 2019 Intervarsities and two gold medals in the 2018 Cork Open competitions. We also engage in a number of less competitive and more fun meets such as the Lifting League, where a team from UCC took first place last year.

We see ourselves as quite a light hearted club, with a friendly atmosphere at training. On the social side of things, we’re quite active. We regularly engage in social nights organised by our Ents Rep, along with our weekly ritual of après training burritos in town.

So, if you’re an expert or a total beginner, come and join the Olympic Weightlifting Club and develop a love for strength training, athleticism and perhaps even Mexican cuisine!

UCC Powerlifting club is now in its seventh year and we’ve grown so much since our conception. It was founded by Abigail Cronin in April of 2013. The club has enjoyed a wealth of success, from winning collegiate intervarsity competitions 4 years in a row, to having past & present members of the club represent Ireland at International competitions.

This year we were once again crowned as overall winners and best club at the intervarsities held in April. Overall the club received six individual first place medals and four third place medals. As well as this two of our members were recognised as the best lifters on the day. Freya Hammer, a UCC graduate and alumni member, was titled the ‘’Best Female Lifter’’. At the same time our PRO, Kenneth Nwaezeigwe was chosen as the ‘’Best Male lifter’’.

The club has no plans of letting up or slowing down anytime soon. UCC Powerlifting club boasts memberships in multiple drug free powerlifting federations including the IrishPF, IDFPA & AIPO.

However, what separates UCCPC from other clubs isn’t the intense, physical nature of the sport we practice. It’s the nature of inclusiveness that we all embody. Whether male or female, young or old, no matter your strength level, Powerlifting welcomes us all. It’s the sense of community that each and every member of the club possesses. It’s the fact that everyone in the club is willing to help his/her teammate, whether it be in the gym or outside. The friendships formed in the club outstretch far beyond the squat racks. We’re a family here at UCC Powerlifting. We hope you’ll enjoy being a part of it.

UCC Rugby was the college’s very first club. Since the 1870’s, a powerful sense of community has seen tremendous achievements, shaped some world class players and forged priceless friendships. As one of the most popular sports in Ireland, the club is proud to be the biggest in Munster, with 5 men’s teams. Today, the club is as welcoming as ever. We encourage those of you from a social to elite level to head along to a training session, be it with the Seniors, Juniors, the U20’s, the infamous J2 Bulldogs or the 7’s. In the last 2018/19 season, a number of our players represented Ireland at the U20 international stage in various competitions, our seniors competed in the highest level of amateur rugby in the All-Ireland League and the U20’s retained the Donal Walsh cup for the second year running.

The U20 and J2 Bulldogs also compete in both Munster and inter-varsity leagues, giving everyone on the team an opportunity. The season also included many a social evening, and adventures abroad rich in memories! We look forward to another successful season in full swing with many new members. Don’t be shy!

Skydiving

Snowsports

Soccer

Squash

Did you know it’s possible to go skydiving without a parachute? And since that one time might be one of the most exciting experiences of your life, the UCC Skydiving Club highly recommends you do it again and again (in which case you will need that parachute!). So come and join us, the most adrenaline-fuelled and thrilling club in UCC!

UCC Skydiving has been growing in the past years, welcoming new students willing to learn and complete their first parachute jump. Working out of the Irish Parachute Club (IPC) in Offaly, about two hours drive from Cork, UCC Skydiving offers discounted jump rates and subsidised travel for students interested in learning to skydiving or who just want to jump for fun.

You can choose between the Static Line or the Accelerated FreeFall courses to get your A-licence, during which time you will be trained by highly experienced instructors to get ready for your first solo jump experience. The training involves around 6 hours ground school followed by a skydive from the IPC’s jump plane.

If a solo skydive seems a bit too much for you don’t worry, we got you covered with the Tandem jump! With this jump you will be paired with an instructor and after a brief one-on-one training with him you will be ready to go. And for crazy people with huge hearts, UCC Skydiving is proud to be the club that raised the most money for charity with its Tandem event for two years in a row now!

UCC Skydiving also features an engaging social aspect both in Cork and on our overnight sessions in the IPC clubhouse,

often staying at the club Friday night through Sunday with heated bunk houses, showers and a cafeteria available on site, all located a short distance from the towns of Edenderry and Portarlington. Other events include boogie weeks in which the IPC stays open for a full week to focus on helping students progress to their full licence, trips to wind tunnels to work on freefall technique as well as trips to sunny drop zones abroad where the weather is a bit more predictable.

No previous experience is necessary so if you’re interested or just want some more information then don’t hesitate to contact anyone in the club. Blue skies!

We’re back! After a year hiatus UCC Snowsports has returned. UCC Snowsports is a club for those of you out there feeling adventurous and would like to try your hand at skiing or snowboarding. We cater for all levels and no previous experience is needed. The locations where we train will have all the gear you need so you don’t require any gear to sign up and have a go.

We will have monthly sessions in Kilternan Ski Club which will be great for beginners and anyone looking to brush up on their skills. For our more competitive and experienced members we will also be sending off a team to compete in intervarsities for our first time.

Along with all this we will also have we will have weekly wakeboarding sessions in Ballyhass to keep members active. This is a great way to practice freestyle. We will be continuing our tradition of having some of the best socials in UCC which is a great way to meet new friends. With multiple trips and events in the pipeline this year is sure to be a busy and exciting one.

Be sure to keep an eye out for our social media pages for more information and maybe some giveaways. Email us at [email protected] if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing everyone of ye at our events.

Based in the Mardyke Arena, UCC Swimming & Waterpolo is at the heart of student life in UCC. We cater for the students of UCC who wish to continue swimming to a high level where our season culminates every year in a weekend away for intervarsities. The season also includes several masters galas and other university invitationals. We are very lucky to be coached by two of Cork’s finest swimming coaches, Head Coach Diarmuid Herlihy is a former open water swimming record holder on the straits of Gibraltar and Emeritus Professor Tom Cross who is perhaps Corks best known swimming coach with over 40 years of coaching experience. We train every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7-8:30am as well as Wednesday evenings from 8-9pm. We are thrilled to be represented internationally by Sean O’Riordan. Sean, who is a para athlete has represented Ireland at the European Para Championships and is currently in training with a goal of attending Tokyo 2020 to compete in the Paralympics.

UCC Water polo is a great avenue for those who wish to play water polo to a competitive level while maintaining a fun and relaxed atmosphere, although you’ll have to be tough and willing to take the occasional kick to the gut! Water polo, like swimming culminates in the inter-varsity competition hosted by another Irish University. Training for water polo is Monday evenings from 9-10pm and Sunday evenings from 6-8pm. All the necessary equipment is provided at our training sessions.

Last year for swimming varsities we travelled to Belfast on Friday morning for heats that afternoon. After the finals session on Saturday we attended a black-tie ball hosted by Queens University and returned to Cork on Sunday evening. Three UCC swimmers qualified through this event for Celtic Nations where they represented Ireland who went on to win the international meet in Cardiff.

As swimming and waterpolo can be restrictive in terms of talking while training we endeavour to have a social evening monthly so everyone can catch up and get to know each-other outside of the pool.

UCC Swimming & Waterpolo is a great club to keep active while at the same making friends and getting the most out of your time in UCC. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us on Facebook (UCC Swimming & Waterpolo) or email us at [email protected]

UCC table tennis is populated by a mix of some of Ireland’s top ranked players and enthusiastic beginners, making it suitable for anyone to come by, pick up a bat and get playing. We train twice a week with one of Ireland’s top coaches and there is always a wide variety of players looking to practice or just have fun. Our training times are Wednesday 5-7pm and Thursday 4-6pm and no matter what your skill level table tennis has a spot for you!

The main competition the club focuses on throughout the year is the intervarsity competition and intervarsity league, where the club has done outstandingly well over the last couple of years including winning the interversity league last year. Every year brings an exciting new challenge to the table in forming a competitive team from a multinational group of players, both old and new.

For beginners, We also set up a weekly table tennis charity league which helps beginner’s learn the rules of the game and let them get a taste of the competitive side of table tennis. Equipment will be provided for beginners so just show up at any of our training times and we will get you on a table! For regular updates on upcoming events and training times, follow us on facebook at ucctabletennis or email us at [email protected].

Whether you’re a group of thrill-seeking dudes who’ve never stepped on a board or a semi-pro surfer looking for new friends to take on the seas with, look no further than one of UCC’s most popular sporting groups, Surf Club! The club is open to beginner and experienced surfers alike, and surf outings target a wide range of skill levels. Members benefit from our annual organised trips to famous beaches such as Lahinch, Co. Clare and Castlegregory, Co. Kerry where lessons for beginners cover surfing fundamentals and technique. For experienced surfers, there is a great opportunity to charge some of the Atlantic Ocean’s most renowned breaks along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Early in the New Year, UCC Surf Club embark on an International Trip which have taken us to places as far as Taghazout in Morocco and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands! This usually takes place for a week in early January before the second semester begins and, once again, is to open to everyone, no matter what level you’re at. These types of trips allow members to experience new cultures, make new friends and surf in some of the most amazing places on Earth!

The club committee consists of ten people across all standards, and every year a first-year representative is chosen to join the committee at our AGM. This is a great opportunity for first years to put forward any ideas they may have and is a brilliant way to get more involved in extracurricular activities that contribute to the college experience.

So, what are you waiting for? Take the plunge, get barrelled and join us in the ocean to experience the Olympic’s newest sport!

Taekwon-Do Trampoline and Tumbling

Tennis

UCC Taekwon-Do Club was founded in 1984 and is one of the biggest and most successful martial arts clubs on campus. Taekwon-Do classes are conducted by Grand Master Norman Creedon (9th dan black belt) and Master JB McCarthy (7th dan black belt) and includes free sparring, traditional patterns, one step sparring, as well as self-defence.

Taekwon-Do is suitable for male and female beginners as well as advanced belts. There are separate classes at the same time for beginners and advanced students. The club welcomes practitioners from all Taekwon-Do associations and styles. Whether you are interested in getting fit, losing weight, making new friends, having fun, self-defence or entering competitions, UCC Taekwon-Do Club caters to all requirements.

TaeKwon-Do focuses on both traditional and practical elements. By encouraging students to spar soon after beginning training, it helps promote confidence in one’s ability to defend themselves. Students are trained to be able to react in real self-defence scenarios so they learn basic joint locks, pressure points and releases from grabs.

UCC Taekwon-Do Club has consistently performed at the highest level at the annual Irish Taekwon-Do Intervarsity competition (overall winners 2016-2017). In addition, there is the Open Martial Arts Intervarsity which includes Karate, Kickboxing and other striking arts competing along Taekwon-Do. If you are interested in competition then there are plenty of local, national, and open martial arts competitions. Bring along a friend and try it out on Monday or Wednesday night or Saturday afternoon! Just wear a track suit or shorts and t-shirt, all equipment is provided.

UCC Trampoline & Tumbling Club is an extremely active and welcoming club. We practise Olympic-style trampolining as well as tumbling, both increasingly popular disciplines of gymnastics. The sport of trampolining is fun and easy to learn, and becomes progressively more challenging and exciting as members gain experience and learn more difficult skills. Trampolining involves performing acrobatic skills in the air and landing on the feet, front and back, with different combinations of rotations, twists and shapes. Tumbling involves performing a series of skills on sprung track, with the feet and hands making contact with the ground. All of our club training is held in the Mardyke Arena using our state-of-the-art equipment and is overseen by our experienced coaches and club members.

Our club welcomes members of all levels, whether you have never attempted gymnastics before or if you have years of competition and training experience, in any discipline.

Trampolining is an exhilarating sport to take part in, is very impressive to watch and has a strong community across Ireland. There are seven student clubs in Ireland alone; UCC, UL, UCD, DCU, Trinity, Queen’s and Maynooth, with many more in England, Scotland, Wales and across Europe. There are many opportunities to make friends across the country at the many competitions that our club attends, with a minimum of three in Ireland and one abroad. Student trampoline has an excellent reputation for a vibrant social scene and exciting club trips and events throughout the year.

As well as this, our club has enjoyed an enormous amount of competitive success in the past few years, most recently winning every competition which we were eligible to win in the 18/19 year. UCC Trampoline is also the current back-to-back Munster Open and Intervarsities champions. Many people join our club and win individual medals and awards even in their first year.

Training is on every day of the college week in the Mardyke Arena; Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Tuesday and Friday mornings. We have an open-door training policy where anybody can join at any ability level for however much or little training they want, so if want you can train for over ten hours a week or as little as half an hour. As well as this, new members can join at any stage of the year. We hope to see you all there!

UCC Tennis Club is open to everyone from those who have never hit a ball, to those who already play at a competitive level, and everyone in between. There are weekly training sessions throughout the college year, with different groups so you can play with people at a similar level to you. At these training sessions, we have coaches who will help you learn to play and to improve your skills. Members of the club can also play outside of training times, allowing you to practice, play matches, and improve your game in your own time.

We play our tennis at Sunday’s Well Tennis Club, located on the Mardyke Walk just a few minutes’ walk from the main campus. The tennis clubs features eight outdoor omnicourt surfaced courts, which can be played on all year round, and in most weather conditions.

Our advanced teams compete in college intervarsities tournaments in the second semester, where we compete against other colleges and universities from around the country. This year our women’s team came away from the intervarsities as the plate winners. We were also recognised as the ‘’Most Improved Club of the Year’’ at the awards ceremony held every year at the Clubs and Socs Ball.

But UCC Tennis Club isn’t all about competition! We also have a number of social events and nights throughout the college year. These offer a great opportunity to get to know other players in the club and make some new friends.

All newcomers are welcome so please come along and join the club! Email: [email protected]: ucc.tennisTwitter: TennisUCCInstagram: ucc_tennisSnapchat: tennisucc

Ultimate Frisbee

Volleyball

Ultimate Frisbee is a sport that combines the non-stop movement and endurance of soccer, the agility of basketball, the aerial passing and team tactics of American Football, and the constant, manic action of hurling. Ultimate is played 7 a-side outdoors and 5 a-side indoors, on a pitch with scoring zones at either end. What makes Ultimate unique is the importance of the Spirit of the Game, which holds each and every player responsible for fair play and mutual respect.

Last year marked UCC Ultimate’s 20th anniversary. Since our founding, we have grown into one of the largest student-run clubs and also one of the most successful. We compete in the Men’s, Women’s and Mixed divisions, with excellent results across all three in the past year - notably our women’s side winning their 7th Outdoor Intervarsities title in a row. Our success stretches back across the years and has given us a reputation as the team to beat in Ireland.

Besides competing at the intervarsity level, our members have the opportunity to play at a national level alongside various clubs all over the country, as well as internationally. Each year members of our club join the ranks of the Irish national teams (Juniors, U24s, Seniors), competing at European and World Championships in places like Germany, Italy and Canada.

This club isn’t all work and no play. A stand-out feature of the club is the openness and accepting nature of its members, especially to first-years and new members. Every week there are events organised for everyone to participate in. We pride ourselves on being a club where you are not only guaranteed to learn a new and exciting sport, but make new friends for life.

Follow us on social media to keep up with training times and events, and feel free to message the Facebook page or email us if you have any questions. Come join us - we guarantee that it will be the highlight of your time here in college!
