RACE REPORTS 1/9/19 (All good pics, compliments of Jane Morgan ☺)
GENNAKERS
Being the first race of the season, with a strong
outgoing tide pushing boats across the line and a
challenging enough wind to be unsettling for some,
many boats elected for a cautious start.
Secret (Barry and Anna), 5Buckaroos (Vincent) and
Casper (Duncan) got the best of the start.
Second Wind (Michael and Tara) had just cleared
through the RS100’s and was starting to challenge
Secret when a fouled mainsheet in the tack caused
it to capsize and bury its masthead in the mud;
causing a lengthy recovery. That was simply the
first of many capsizes recorded by the gennaker
fleet during the day. Only Secret, 5Buckaroos and
Shachi (Bill) avoided any.
Being sailed by a lightweight, Casper was as usual
slow upwind and quick downwind. As Duncan almost
levelled with Vince at the first leeward rounding, he
capsized on the jibe and spent the rest of the race
chasing Vince. That gap closed as wind-speed
dropped during the race but a minute remained at
the finish.
Shachi (Bill) sported an old mainsail and slowed, after a quick
first work, as the wind moderated. Hooray (Garry) did its
capsizing early in the race and arrived home last but happy.
Secret stayed far enough ahead to score an easy line honours.
Second Wind got up and going fast enough (without any more
capsizes) to cut through the rest of the fleet and be second
across the line. But it couldn’t get far enough ahead of the
leading RS’s to do well on handicap. Instead 5Buckaroos and
Casper romped across the line less than five minutes behind to
take out two of the top three handicap places. Congratulations
to Laura and Francine in Mr Bond who overcame their light
weight and several capsizes to be the lead 15 on handicap.

QUIZ Trent was the quiz winner – the answer was that Chris and Jonathon were pouring concrete in the
fence post, to strengthen it. A very close second place went to Jenny Melville.
This Edition’s Quiz, below
Winner (to be announced next Newsletter) is the first person to email me the correct answer
(including why) [email protected]
A river runs straight from West to East at 10 knots. A 10 mile race is held: the boats sail downstream, from West to East. The first heat is held in the morning, when there is no wind. The second heat is held in the afternoon, when there is a 10 knot wind from the West. In which heat are the faster times recorded, and why?
