President’s Report 2016-17

The Rotary Year from July 1st to 30th June appears to pass extremely fast, especially when you are busy with the President role. This year we have embarked on a number of changes in our club structure and in the way we operate. Last year’s Rotary International Legislature Committee and the International President John Germ from the USA offered clubs a new set

of freedoms and ideas for changes some of which we flirted with, others we tried to adopt and/or adapt. I wish to thank the Moe Rotarians for their thoughts on changes and the good spirit with which they embarked on a challenging year for our club. Many clubs in Australia and New Zealand have been declining in membership. Our club started the year with 29 members and finishes at changeover with 28. We had hoped to increase by three but we have struggled to attract new members. Nevertheless, we have had a busy, active and community involved year. Our regular Monday night meetings were attended by 17-18 Rotarians each week on average and we tried a breakfast meeting and a few off the usual RSL site meetings. Thanks to PP Peter Kingsbury for the varied and interesting programme over the year. One of the key things carried out this year was for the Treasurer, PDG Bryon Puddy and I to build on PP Diane Wilkinson’s work as Treasurer to develop and put to the club, an annual budget (based on historical principles of the past three years’ expenditure) and regular progress reports. This has enabled our planning to finish the year with a close to balanced Operational Income and Expenditure statement as presented in the Treasurer’s Report. Projects this year have been varied and successful.

I would like to thank all Rotarians who were involved in my President’s project of Rotary Club of Moe Awareness in the Community through the growing and displaying of Marigolds in our town to brighten Moe in Summer. The event of the year in terms of Community involvement and support from our Club is, for me, obviously our Pride of Workmanship Awards to local school students where parents, siblings and, in many cases, Grandparents join with us at Old Gippstown for a ceremony and presentations to student who have demonstrated school Community inputs.

Our amazing and well attended and generously sponsored Charity Golf Day is also a highlight and this year’s day was, despite some early light showers, a raging success. Unfortunately, my special team of Rtn Nathan Harding, PP Bruce Paull and myself, started well for the Rotary Clubs’ Claude Staff trophy, but we crashed in the second nine and our average handicap of 36 did not save us from defeat by the Central Traralgon Club Team. Our local schools who support the Rotary Junior Community Awards have this year increased engagement and this is yet another great feature of the 2016-2017 year. Thanks to Rtn Helen Morrison and Rtn Robin Noakes for their great work on this project. I would like to thank all Rotarians in our club for their consideration and involvement this year. Our club cannot function without volunteers and members who see and act out our “service above self” motto in the spirit of Rotary. I would especially like to thank my Committee chairs, the Golf Day Committee and chair and the Board for all the work and careful deliberations that have had to be completed this year. I am sure that next year will be an exciting and fulfilling one for us all under the leadership of PE Maureen Bishop and her team. Maureen has served over past years a Treasurer, Secretary and this year as President Elect and she has been a stalwart for me as President and for the club’s effective and efficient functioning. Thank you so much Maureen for you support and for your wonderful contributions to the club.

VALE Laurie Huffer, one of our oldest and most active Rotarians over many years. Laurie held from year to year many key roles in our club and in most recent years was the club historian. His memories of many events and activities was always fascinating to listen to and he was a regular attender and much loved fellow Rotarian. We miss Laurie and his contributions to our club. We offer our condolences to Jean and the family on his passing. Len Cairns President Rotary Club of Moe 2016-2017

Project Account This account holds funds we generate for community purposes over the year, along with accumulated reserves carried forward from year to year and the Club does not claim any administrative costs from the Project fund. The Rotary Club of Moe has raised over $45,000 this year from fundraising activities, donations and the general community. Whilst our major activity, the Rotary Golf Day Classic, has raised $27,000 this year the Club needs other major fund raising activities to enable us to achieve future Community projects. Other activities we have participated in include Carols By Candlelight, Moe Racing Club Cup Day & Horses and Horsepower, Apex & Lions Bonfire and Save the Children (Good Beginnings).

The Club has donated $34727 towards Rotary, Community and International Projects, and includes 28.8% being donated to Latrobe Regional Hospital & Gippsland Rotary Centenary House, 8.1% to Youth Programs, 17.4% to International & Rotary

International Projects and 45.7% to the Community as shown below.

Administration Account The Administration account controls the functions of the Club to which Rotarians con-tribute. Members contribute by Annual Subscriptions, Dinner Fees and Fines. The Club raised $5291 from member subscriptions. The present membership is 28 with 1 Honorary member. This year the Club paid out $6454 to Rotary International, District 9820 for per capita fees and Rotary Down Under for magazines. Due to the increasing costs associated with and a reduction in the account balance a re-view of the Administration account has been undertaken and should consolidate this ac-count into the future against the increasing fee and costs.

Once again, we have enjoyed various speakers from the wider community. I have tried to

make the speakers topics relevant to our daily lives, and of a wide interest, so there was

something for everyone. The topics helped to maintain and stimulate interest and have

ranged from Rotary Programs, Community issues as well as Rotarian participation.

I would like to thank President Len Cairns for giving me the opportunity to again be chair of the Vocational service Committee. Also thanks to my great team for your support for the many programs we completed.

Rotary Junior Community Awards (RJCA) We had students from Elizabeth Street, Albert Street and Newborough Primary School participate in our RJCA program. During the year, students from each school were given the opportunity of attending our dinner meeting to share their experiences of participating in the program. This program has been a huge success with students now approaching the schools to be involved in the program.

Our club again organised a presentation night but due to the uncertain weather the presentations were held at Elizabeth Street Primary School in their undercover area, with a barbecue prepared by the Rotary Community service team. Thank you to all members of the club who assisted with catering on the night and special thanks to the MC, Roger, who did a great job. Another successful night which was enjoyed by all who attended.

Pride of Workmanship Awards In December we held our Pride of Workmanship Awards at Gippsland Heritage Park. 13 students, who were nominated by their respective schools, attended along with their family members and teachers. Each student received a certificate and $50 in recognition for their contribution to their school and their local community. A

fantastic evening thanks to our committee and all the Rotarians who assisted with the night.

Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) In May we sponsored two Students from Lowanna Secondary College to participate in the MUNA camp which was held at Phillip Island. Nicole Riseley and David Orton attended the two day Camp and represented the country of Russia. Both Nicole and David attended our meeting on the 15th of May and gave our members a presentation of their experience. Their presentation was well received and gave us all a good indication of their preparation undertaken and enjoyment gained from the weekend. Well done to both students.

John Dwyer Citizen Award Also in December, Moe Rotarian Peter Kingsbury presented the John Dwyer Citizen Award to Gabrielle Powell at the Lowanna Secondary School end of year presentations. Thankyou Peter for representing the Vocational Service Committee at this event.

Vocational Service Business Awards On May the 22nd we presented three Moe businesses with Vocational Service Business Awards. These businesses were nominated for their commitment to raise the profile of the Moe Business Community. Brian Gregory from Gregory’s Sports and Mu-sical Equipment, Peri Hortis from Nextra Moe Lotto and Saviges Road Fast and Ezy, Trena Albanese from Esteem Beauty Therapy were nominated by our members and invited to attend our dinner meeting to receive their award. The Vocational Service Committee also oversees a number of other programs and activities on behalf of our club. Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), Rotary Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) and Rotary Fostering Youth Drive Awareness (RYDA) and we actively encourage participation in each of these programs. We continue to look forward to the next year and working with our youth, the leader of the future. Helen Morrison Chair Vocational Service Committee.

Committee Members: Alan Bishop (Chair), Pash Demagistris, Barry Dunstan, Ross Maxfield, Bruce Paull, Alan Sinnott, Lyn Cassar, Dave Wood, Julian Yeatman My role as Chair of the Community Service Committee has been both productive and rewarding and I would like to thank my committee and other members of the Club who participated in helping us in our various events throughout the year.

Good Beginnings In 2016, the Co-ordinator from Good Beginnings contacted our Club requesting assistance to clean up their garden area. The school also requested help in spreading 2 metres of sand into the children’s sand pit. This work was completed over a couple of visits thanks to Ross Maxfield, Julian Yeatman and Maureen Bishop. The school was very appreciative of the work carried out and paid our club $200 for our effort.

Newborough East Kindergarten We received a letter of request from the Director of the Newborough East Kindergarten advising that they wished to undertake a gardening project and install garden boxes for the students to plant and care for vegetables. Our committee organised the purchase of three planter boxes, cleared and levelled the site, erected the colourbond boxes and filled them with soil.

As a thankyou gift, the students presented our club with a wall hanging displaying the children’s hand prints.

Moe Racing Club Cup Day Once again we were approached to assist with parking for the Moe Racing Club Cup Day in October 2016. Thanks to Barry Dunstan, Peter Kingsbury, Len Cairns who assisted me with this event. The Racing Club also hired our mobile cooler and they donated $750 to our club for our services on the day.

Carols by Candlelight The annual Carols by Candlelight was held at Old Gipps Town. Unfortunately, the weather was not favourable this year and our volunteers struggled to stay dry while cooking and handing out free sausages. However, the rain soon passed and our volunteers were able to continue to provide sausages and enjoy the Christmas Carols.

Energy Australia

As in previous years, we were again approached to assist with Energy Australia’s annual Christmas bbq. Thanks to John Hutchinson, Ross Maxfield, Robin Noakes and Maureen Bishop who assisted me on the day cooking a variety of meats to serve the couple of hundred hungry workers on site.

Lions / Apex Fireworks night

The Annual Lions/Apex Bonfire night was held early November and after a very cold start to the day, the night went well with a good crowd turning out for the entertainment and fireworks display. Several Rotarians volunteered to help on the night by serving on various food stalls and helping with the tractor rides.

Botanic Garden Working Bee A working bee was organised to undertake several repairs in the Botanic Gardens. Members removed rotted timbers from the tables and replaced and repainted the table and chairs. The Rotary sign hanging on the pavilion was also due for some urgent attention and has now been restored to look like new.

Moe Racing Club – Horses and Horse Power day

The Moe Racing club contacted our club to again assist with the car parking duties at their Horses and Horse Power day. Thanks to all Rotarians who helped with the parking.

Good Friday Appeal

Dave Wood organised several of our members to walk the streets of Moe and door knock for the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal. Over a two hour period, we managed to raise $1,069 – a great effort by all. Thanks to all those who volunteered on the day.

Proposed Botanic Garden Playground

For the past two years, our club has been working with the Latrobe City to construct a playground in the Botanic Gardens in Moe. After many meetings between our sub committee and the Latrobe City representatives we were successful in receiving a grant to assist in appointing an architect to design a concept plan of the proposed park. The concept plan has now been completed and is awaiting to be adopted by Council. Again, I thank all Rotarians and partners who have helped throughout the year. Some of our volunteer jobs have been about raising funds for our club and others have been about just lending a hand in the community and that makes a good combination and an excellent outcome for the Community Committee. International Service Report 2016-17

Well another year has passed, and we have enjoyed supporting our international projects thus far. November saw us jetting off to Bali to visit the No.3 Bunatan School in Amed with local Rotarian’s, local business men & women who donated to the project and friends of rotary also. With the help of local businesses, we were able to raise just under $2000.00. This allowed us to be able to provide 6 new ceramic urinal toilets and tiling for the boy’s toilet area. The work was conducted by a local builder and tiler from the Amed region. It was an enjoyable time with the people who supported this project seeing first hand where their investment was going. Special mention to Tonya Cairns, who again was our interpreter.

The school was very welcoming of our visit for the 9th year running. The kids especially enjoyed the sweet treats that we bought along. Our outgoing exchange student this year was Chyna Lace. Chyna headed to Germany for her 12 month visit as a student. We wish her well and await a report from her when she returns.

We were pleased to be able to also have a banner present in the main street with the promotion of “Marigolds for Moe”. It showcased what we do on an international level within the community of Moe. I would like to thank Michael Koch, Peter Kingsbury, Shen Guo, Sharlee Zhang and Kishor Manani this year for their support in making this year another successful one.

Gippsland Rotary Golf Classic 2016-2017

YALLOURN GOLF CLUB Golf Links Rd, Yallourn Heights .

Y allourn Golf Club, home to the GIPPSLAND ROTARY GOLF

CLASSIC, is one of the finest courses in the Latrobe Valley if

not Victoria. Each fairway is a picture of beauty with excellent

views of the country side available from anywhere on the course.

The 17th Gippsland Rotary Golf Classic held at the beautiful Yallourn Golf course on the 20th March 2017 was a great day again due to the generous support of our Sponsors, Community, Rotarians, Golfers and all those who participated on the day and in the evening.

Despite some early light showers, the weather cleared and players and workers had a day that was enjoyed by all. The winners in the golf appreciated the generosity of the spon-sors and the raffles and auctions were very well supported and everyone was a winner on the day.

We raised over $27,000.00 on the day and this money will be distributed by the Rotary Club of Moe over the next couple of months. As in previous years, beneficiaries will be Latrobe Regional Hospital, Gippsland Rotary Centenary House, and our club’s local and international projects.

The major winners of the golf were:-

The Best 3 Person Ambrose team was Matts Mates consisting of Matt Wilkinson, Brad Thomas and Lindsay Wood were successful with a great score of 55 nett.

The Runner’s up were the Gregory’s Sports & Music team of Rob Krekelberg , Reuben Kincaid and David Knight with another top score of 56 2/3 nett.

Third place went to the Rookies team consisting of Bill Williams , Marie Brien-Williams and Kevin Brien who finished with a score of 57 1/2 nett.

The Best Rotary Team and winner of the Claude Staff Memorial Trophy was the team from Rotary Club of Traralgon Central consisting of Jeff Landis, Frank Fitzpatrick and Peter Simcock with a score of 59 1/3 nett.

The Best Ladies team were the Champion Chicks with Lorraine Backman, Val Flanigan and Gwen Grettor with a winning of 69 3/8 nett

The Rotary Club of Moe thanked Yallourn Golf Club for their excellent presentation of

the course and Clubhouse and the great service provided to all throughout the day and the

evening. Again, thanks to all our Sponsors for being an important part of a great day and

we look forward to repeating our success again in 2018.
