Trevor Bauer's solid night leads Indians to 3-1 win against Chicago White Sox

By Ryan Lewis Published: May 19, 2015

Trevor Bauer turned in a solid outing and the Indians topped the Chicago White Sox 3-1 on the road Tuesday night.

Bauer (3-1) allowed one run and struck out seven over 7 1/3 innings pitched. Cody Allen came on with two outs in the eighth to record a four-out save, his seventh of

the season.

The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off of White Sox starter Jose Quintana (2-4) when Jason Kipnis opened the game with a triple and later scored on a

sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Michael Brantley.

After the White Sox (18-18) tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Indians (15-23) responded in the top of the fifth with an RBI double by Jose Ramirez to again

score Kipnis.

In the top of the eighth, Brandon Moss extended the Indians' lead to 3-1 with a solo home run, his sixth of the season.

Corey Kluber doesn't say much, but history does about his 30 strikeouts in two starts

Paul Hoynes, May 19, 2015

CHICAGO – Thirty strikeouts and one walk in 17 innings. It doesn't get much better than that for a pitcher, but Corey Kluber hardly seemed to notice.

Monday night he struck out 12 White Sox in nine innings on 108 pitches. In the start before that he struck out 18 batters in eight innings against St. Louis on 113

pitches.

"The two starts were pretty similar," said Kluber. "The big key is getting ahead of guys."

Kluber did not offer much more elaboration. It's not his way. When he struck out 18 Cardinals in eight scoreless innings with one hit and no walks, a reporter asked

him how it felt to pitch one of the greatest games in history.

"I don't like to get too far ahead of myself," was Kluber's answer.

While Kluber wouldn't say much about his last two starts, history did.

There have been 24 instances, going back to 1914, in which a pitcher has struck out 30 or more batters in consecutive starts. The last two pitchers to do it, according

to Elias Sports Bureau, were Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez. They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in July.

Johnson did it three times in 2001 with Arizona and seven times in his career. Martinez did it once in 2000 and three times in 1999 for Boston.

The big-league record for strikeouts in consecutive games belongs to Kerry Wood, who struck out 33 for the Cubs in May of 1998.

In 1968, Luis Tiant set the Indians' club record with 32 strikeouts in consecutive games. Sam McDowell, Tiant's teammate, struck out 30 in consecutive games in the

same year. Kluber and McDowell are tied for second in team history.

The last Indians pitcher to strike out 12 or more batters in consecutive starts, according to High Heat Stats, was Dennis Eckersley in 1974.

Concerning this season, Kluber leads the big leagues in strikeouts with 76. He has three games where he's struck out 10 or more.

"Kluber has the nastiest stuff I've ever seen," said Chris Sale, who started Monday's game for the White Sox. Sale struck out 11 in eight innings. Sale, like Kluber, left

with a no-decision as the White Sox won, 2-1, in 10 innings.

Pitching coach Mickey Callaway, as usual, watched Kluber's bullpen session.

"It was his best ever," said Callaway, "and he was able to carry it into the game."

Kluber is 1-0 with a 0.53 ERA in his last two starts. In his first seven, he went 0-5 with a 5.04 ERA. The last two starts have lowered Kluber's to 3.79.

"If you just look at the distribution of pitches, he probably has a little bit better mix in his last two starts," said Callaway. "He's mixing in more fastballs, two seamers

and four seamers.

"Really, his fastball command is probably what's made it better. That's when he's going to be at his best. I thought Monday night, he was better than when he

punched out 18 just from a fastball command standpoint."

Kluber started Monday's game by striking out the White Sox in order in the first inning. If the Indians had sent him out for the ninth inning against the Cardinals, and

he'd done the same thing, Kluber would hold the MLB record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game.

Asked Monday night after the game if he thought about that, Kluber smiled and said, "It never crossed my mind. Different team, different day, all kind of things."

Kluber isn't a dreamer; he's a doer.

Cleveland Indians reliever Marc Rzepczynski and what it's like to throw one pitch and call it a day

Zack Meisel, Northeast Ohio Media Group

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Marc Rzepczynski tossed a pitch, watched the motion behind him, walked off the field and retreated to the clubhouse.

That was his day's work. One 91-mph sinker.

Astros outfielder Colby Rasmus grounded the pitch to Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis, who initiated a 4-6-3 double play, which ended the bottom of the

seventh inning at Minute Maid Park on April 8. The Indians gripped a 1-0 lead, which they stretched to 2-0 the following frame. Manager Terry Francona summoned

Rzepczynski from the bullpen to protect that slim advantage, as Houston had placed two runners aboard with one out.

Rzepczynski only needed one pitch. When he returned to the dugout, he received pats on the back and the response to which he's become accustomed: "Tough

day."

"They were all laughing," said Rzepczynski, who led the major leagues last season with five one-pitch appearances. "In that time, they congratulated me for doing my

job. And in other times, I come in after one pitch and they pat me on the behind and say, 'Go get 'em tomorrow.' Which, I will. A lot of times, I'm out there the next day

facing the same guy."

Rarely does it work out so conveniently as it did on April 8, Rzepczynski's first outing of the season. One pitch secured the southpaw two outs. There were 140

instances last season in which a hurler threw only one pitch. On 14 of those occasions, the pitcher recorded two outs. The pitcher failed to register an out on 20

occasions. On May 31, Tribe lefty Josh Outman served up a home run on his only offering of the game.

In his five one-pitch cameos last season, Rzepczynski retired the batter four times.

"It's the good, bad and ugly that comes with facing only one guy sometimes," Rzepczynski said. "I definitely like facing more than one guy, but I'll also face just that

one guy if that's what's needed."

Rzepczynski doesn't have a ton of control over whether the opposing hitter will prove eager enough to swing at his first pitch. Often, however, the veteran reliever will

only take the hill long enough to duel one batter, thanks to the way Francona deploys his bullpen in late-game situations. That leaves Rzepczynski with little time to

leave an impression.

In 23 of his 73 appearances last season Rzepczynski faced only one hitter. He recorded an out in 19 of those 23 short-lived outings. This season, Rzepczynski has

departed after one batter in six of his 18 outings. He has failed to register an out in four of those trials.

"It's good when I get the guy out," Rzepczynski said. "It sucks when I don't get the guy out."

Rzepczynski said his fellow relievers tease him for being sore the day after a brief mound stint. He said he typically only feels that way if he warmed up more than

once or throws 20-30 pitches.

Of course, not every outing can unfold the way his first did this season. One pitch, two outs. That's efficiency at its finest.

"Being a sinker baller, sometimes I get them to hit the ball on the ground," Rzepczynski said. "Sometimes they hit it at someone and I get two outs. Sometimes they

hit it off my foot. I try to go out there and throw strikes and get the guy out and then whatever else happens after that happens after that. But it's definitely nice to go

out and throw one pitch and get two outs.

"I'm surely not complaining about that."

How Cleveland Indians relievers do when they throw just one pitch

Rich Exner, May 19, 2015

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland Indians relievers threw just one pitch during their appearances 10 times last season, as manager Terry Francona set an American

League record for using relievers 574 times.

Seven out of 10 of the one-pitch outings resulted in an out. But one was on a force play in which a run scored, and another out was the result of a caught stealing.

Here's a rundown of what happened in those 10 appearances:

May 4 vs. White Sox, a 4-3 loss: Marc Rzepczynski recorded an out to end the ninth inning.

May 5 vs. Twins, a 1-0 loss: Rzepczynski recorded an out to end the 10th inning.

May 31 vs. Rockies, a 7-6 win: Josh Outman gave up a 3-run home run to allow the game to become tied in the seventh inning.

Aug. 27 at White Sox, a 3-2 loss: Rzepczynski recorded the second out of the seventh inning.

Aug. 29 at Royals, a 6-1 win: Kyle Crockett hit a batter with his only pitch in the seventh inning.

Aug. 29 at Royals, a 6-1 win: Rzepczynski recorded an out to end the seventh inning.

Aug. 30 at Royals, a 3-2 win: C.C. Lee recorded the second out of the eighth inning but a run scored on the play to tie the game.

Sept. 8, vs. Angels, a 12-3 loss: Crockett recorded the second out of the eighth inning.

Sept. 12, at Tigers, a 7-2 loss: Rzepczynski gave up an RBI single.

Sept. 23, vs. Royals, a 7-1 loss: Nick Hagadone entered the game in the sixth inning, which ended on a caught stealing before Hagadone threw a pitch. Then

Hagadone gave up a single on the first pitch of the seventh inning.

Corey Kluber gives another great performance, gets nothing in return --

Bud Shaw, May 19, 2015 at 9:36 AM, updated May 19, 2015 at 12:55 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Corey Kluber was my choice to win consecutive Cy Young Awards.

I don't feel as bad about that pick after the last two starts, even though his 1-5 record now makes him a bigger longshot than a Clydesdale running down Triple Crown

hopeful American Pharoah.

Kluber followed up his 18-strikeout performance against the St. Louis Cardinals by striking out 12 in nine innings against the White Sox Monday.

The Indians lost 2-1 in 10 innings.

The only run scored off Kluber came on a ball in the dirt that got away from catcher Roberto Perez, who couldn't make the tag on a sliding Adam Eaton.

For Kluber, it's a sign that he has found himself.

For the 14-23 Indians, this is officially rock bottom.

• I once covered a fight in San Diego where the promoter claimed the challenger had a great won-loss record.

Turned out he was something like 2-21 and had been knocked out in his previous three fights.

Is this a good time to remind the people filing lawsuits against Pacquiao of the time reporters caught promoter Bob Arum contradicting himself.

Arum acknowledged it by saying, "Yesterday I was lying. Today I'm telling the truth."

• One of the complaints about Pacquiao comes from Flights Beer Bar, an establishment near LAX Airport that paid $2,600 to broadcast the fight. The proprietor called

the fight "a cash grab."

The fight might have been boring. But it went the distance.

Speaking of cash grabs, that's a lot of $6 beers.

• Carmen Policy, last seen in NFL circles as the Browns' president in 2004, has resurfaced to help steer a NFL stadium proposal in Carson, California.

The idea is for the Chargers and Raiders to share the new stadium.

"I kind of miss the NFL,'' said Policy. "I miss show business."

So that's what this was during the Policy years? Show business? It felt more like a "B" movie than a Broadway smash.

• Clippers' big man DeAndre Jordan reportedly wants a max deal to stay and play with Blake Griffin and Chris Paul.

The Clippers, meanwhile, probably just want him to hit more than 39 percent of his free throws.

Jordan's poor free throw shooting is supposedly a point of contention between Paul and Jordan with Paul being unhappy with Jordan's commitment to improving at

the foul line.

Having enough money to pay somebody to practice them for him is probably not the answer Paul is hoping for from Jordan.

• USGA executive director Mike Davis, in answer to questions about the difficult setup at Chambers Bay, site of the U.S. Open, said players would need "10 practice

rounds" to know the course well enough to win.

To which Rory McIlroy said, "What's Mike Davis' handicap?"

Who does McIlroy think he is? The best player in the world?

• Greg Hardy, who is suspended for the first 10 games of the 2015 season after a domestic violence conviction, vows to reward Dallas Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones

for taking a chance on him.

Not sure what Hardy means by "reward?" But if he's vowing to only get arrested in the offseason that's probably not going to be enough.

• Said Dallas tight end Jason Witten, "I'm against domestic violence but Hardy is a teammate."

Who was charged with throwing a woman on a couch covered with guns and assault rifles.

I don't care if he's your twin brother. It's hard to get behind that.

• There's an undercurrent of resentment on college campuses over the salaries paid big time football coaches.

Not at Notre Dame, where Charlie Weis received $2 million last year and will walk away with $18 million overall.

There, the resentment is all about the money paid big time ex-football coaches.

• Weis is expected to collect a total of $24 million from Notre Dame and Kansas as part of his severance from both universities.

Kansas only owes him $6 million of that.

So, in other words, a relative bargain.

• Alabama coach Nick Saban thinks the national championship playoff diminished interest in other bowls.

The numbers, though, don't seem to back him up, given that there will be three new bowls this season.

And there are three new bowls not only – as a reader theorized – to give Michigan a better chance to make the postseason.

• Giants' wide receiver Odell Beckham is campaigning for bigger salaries for NFL players because of the risks inherent in playing a violent sport.

"I think we should make more money, personally," said Beckham.

The fact players once went both ways and held down a job in the offseason doesn't make Beckham wrong.

Pro football is even riskier than counting on You Said It readers to contribute smart and funny emails.

• Marlins' new manager Dan Jennings, a long time scout who worked as the team's GM the past two seasons, never played professionally or managed a single

game. That didn't stop owner Jeffrey Loria from naming him to replace fired manager Mike Redmond.

Said Jennings, "It is outside the box, I will not deny that. My mom, whom I love deeply, asked me, 'Are you crazy? Have you lost your mind?''

That's always a possibility that when you work for Loria you will lose your mind. But the best bet always is you'll lose your job.

• An Associated Press story reminds us Jennings is Loria's sixth manager since 2010. According to Baseball Reference, he's the first man to manage a big league

game without having been a player or manager at any professional level since Ted Turner stepped down from the owner's box to manage a game in 1977.

Turner told manager Dave Bristol to take the last two weeks of the season off so Turner could evaluate close-up what was wrong with the Braves.

Commissioner Bowie Kuhn stopped the experiment after one game. He told Turner no stock holder in a team could double as its manager.

Turner's response: "If I'm smart enough to save $11 million to buy the team, I ought to be smart enough to manage it."

Now, $11 million would be a pay cut for Nick Swisher.

What Cleveland Indians said after Tuesday night's 3-1 win over White Sox

Paul Hoynes, May 20, 2015

CHICAGO -- Here's what the Indians were talking about after their 3-1 victory over the White Sox on Tuesday night at U.S. Cellular Field.

Manager Terry Francona

What did you think of Trevor Bauer?

"I'll tell you what, he was good. It might not have been his best command, but he threw all his pitches for strikes. Maybe, not always where he wanted to, but he had a

real good breaking ball and in this cold weather that was something.

"He made them respect all his pitches and he competed. He got himself in a bind in the fourth and pitched his way out of it."

Explanation: Bauer allowed one run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings for the win. He struck out seven and walked three. He threw 112 pitches, 68 for strikes.

On why you went to the bullpen in the eighth inning?

"When you're running through Jose Abreu, and he can tie the game at anytime with one swing, it makes you think a lot."

Explanation: Bauer had one runner on and one out when Bryan Shaw relieved to face Abreu. He walked Abreu after Roberto Perez's passed ball moved Adam Eaton

to second and opened first base.

Marc Rzepczynski came on and struck out Adam LaRoche and closer Cody Allen struck out Avisail Garcia to end the inning.

On Jose Ramirez's RBI double in the fifth to give the Tribe a 2-1 lead.

"He came up with a big double. We'll take anything we can get because runs are hard to come by sometimes."

On Brandon Moss's homer in the eighth.

"Moss's tack-on homer was huge. . .That extra run takes away the bunt, the stolen base. It does a lot of things. We had Eaton on second base in the eighth and with

a 3-1 lead we don't have to throw him out at the plate if there's a hit."

On beating Chicago lefty Jose Quintana for the first time.

"He was pretty good. He's able to get the ball above the barrel of some of our right-handed hitters. He kind of short-arms the ball with some decent velocity.

"He's tough. We did a good enough job where we scored enough to win."

Explanation: Quintana came into the game with a 4-0 record and a 2.94 ERA against the Indians.

Trevor Bauer

On being 2-0 in three starts against the White Sox this year.

"I've just happened to run into them when I've been feeling good and executing my pitches well. When you execute well, you have a good chance against anybody.

When you don't, anybody can beat you."

Explanation: Bauer is 2-0 with a 1.33 ERA in three starts against Chicago this year.

Trevor Bauer, Jason Kipnis help Cleveland Indians stop Chicago White Sox: DMan's Report, Game 38

By Dennis Manoloff, May 20, 2015

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Right-hander Trevor Bauer pitched well and Jason Kipnis reached safely three times and scored twice as the Cleveland Indians defeated the

White Sox, 3-1, Tuesday night at US Cellular Field in Chicago.

Here is a capsule look at the game after a DVR review of the Fox SportsTime Ohio telecast:

Impressive work: The Indians (15-23) had lost two in a row. They improved to 8-17 against Central Division opponents.

The Indians defeated a good left-handed starter, Jose Quintana, and ended Chicago's winning streak at six games. The White Sox are 18-18.

Back-to-back, near-carbon-copy excellence: In Bauer's previous start, May 14 against the Cardinals in Cleveland, he allowed one run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings of a

no-decision. He walked three and struck out 10. He threw 110 pitches.

On Tuesday, Bauer allowed one run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings of a victory. He walked three and struck out seven. He threw 112 pitches.

Bauer (3-1, 3.31 ERA) relied primarily on fastballs and breaking pitches to beat the White Sox. His fastball at the belt or above was particularly effective.

Here is a list of the last pitch Bauer made to each of 29 batters faced:

FIRST INNING

(L) Adam Eaton -- 93-mph fastball at belt and inside, grounder to short (3-2 count).

(L) Melky Cabrera -- 94 fastball at belt and inside, foul pop to third (2-0). Tied up Melk Man.

(R) Jose Abreu -- 85 slider down and away, swinging strikeout (3-2). Nasty.

SECOND INNING

(L) Adam LaRoche -- 92 fastball over plate at thighs, fly to left (0-0).

(R) Avisail Garcia -- 78 curve outside corner, swinging strikeout (2-2). Serious 12-to-6 break.

(L) Conor Gillaspie -- 94 fastball above belt, pop to center (0-1).

THIRD INNING

(R) Alexei Ramirez -- 78 curve down and away, grounder to third (1-2). Quality pitch forced Alexeeeeeeei into emergency hack.

Page 25: Club: Cleveland Indians Level of Play: MAJ Position Type ...mlb.mlb.com/documents/1/3/2/125548132/Reds_vs_Indians_d1...Kessler, Joe H CC 06/09/1981 Stngth & Cond Coach Desjardins,

(R) Tyler Flowers -- hanging slider, fly to left (2-2). Bauer was fortunate Flowers, not Miggy, was swinging.

(L) Carlos Sanchez -- slider, grounder to first (1-2).

FOURTH INNING

(L) Adam Eaton -- fastball at belt, foul pop to third (0-0). Good running catch by Mike Aviles near tarp.

(L) Melky Cabrera -- 93 fastball off inside corner, pop to short (2-1). Being behind in the count didn't stop Bauer from getting into Melk Man's kitchen.

(R) Jose Abreu -- 93 fastball outer third at thighs, double to center (0-1). More credit to Abreu for pulling in the hands than blame to Bauer for "mistake.''

(L) Adam LaRoche --93 fastball high, walk (3-0). Bauer appeared to be working around LaRoche -- or at least being very careful.

(R) Avisail Garcia -- 94 fastball inner third at knees, RBI single to center (1-1). Not a bad pitch. White Sox tied score, 1-1.

(L) Conor Gillaspie -- 94 fastball inside, walk (3-1). Close pitch; umpire Brian Knight's call confirmed by K-box. Bases loaded.

(R) Alexei Ramirez -- 79 curve in dirt, swinging strikeout (1-2).*

FIFTH INNING

(R) Tyler Flowers -- 92 fastball inner third, single to left (1-0). Basic grounder through hole.

(L) Carlos Sanchez -- 84 breaking pitch, sacrifice bunt to third (1-1). Flowers to second.

(L) Adam Eaton -- 79 curve, swinging strikeout (1-2). Nasty trumped pesky.

(L) Melky Cabrera -- 93 fastball inside corner at belt, fly to center (1-2).

SIXTH INNING

(R) Jose Abreu -- 92 fastball inner third, fly to center (0-1).

(L) Adam LaRoche -- 93 fastball high and away, walk (3-2). Good AB by LaRoche; he laid off a sharp 2-2 breaking pitch.

(R) Avisail Garcia -- 93 fastball outer third, fielder's choice to pitcher (1-1). Bauer fielded and was forced to wait until shortstop Jose Ramirez covered. Ramirez's relay

was out of rhythm and wild, enabling Garcia to beat it out and advance to second.

Fox SportsTime Ohio analyst Rick Manning said: "That should have been a double-play ball. That's just not knowing who was covering (Ramirez or second baseman

Kipnis). That's a communication breakdown.''

(L) Conor Gillaspie -- 93 fastball inside corner at knees, called strikeout (3-2). Terrific pitch in a big spot. Fastball came back over corner and locked up Gillaspie.

SEVENTH INNING

(R) Alexei Ramirez -- fastball inner half, foul to first (2-1).

(R) Tyler Flowers -- 92 fastball high, swinging strikeout (0-2).

(L) Carlos Sanchez -- 80 curve in dirt, swinging strikeout (1-2). Almost identical to pitch that whiffed Alexeeeeeei to end fourth.

EIGHTH INNING

(L) Adam Eaton -- 91 fastball up, single to center (3-2). Eaton swung through the previous pitch, a 92-mph fastball up.

(L) Melky Cabrera -- 94 fastball off inside corner at belt, fly to right (0-1). Another fastball that tied up Melk Man just enough; Ryan Raburn made catch in front of

track.

(Bryan Shaw replaces Bauer.)

*AB of the game: Tribe pitching coach Mickey Callaway visited Bauer after Gillaspie spit on the 3-1 fastball to draw the walk and load the bases.

Alexeeei is geared for first-pitch fastballs, in general -- even more so after a visit to the mound by the pitching coach. Bauer had read the book: He threw a good

slider that Alexei fouled.

Bauer came back with another slider, this one not as well-located. Alexei wasn't tempted as it ran down and away.

Bauer and catcher Roberto Perez opted for a fastball high, and Alexei was unable to lay off. He swung through it to put Bauer ahead, 1-2.

Bauer looked in for the signs, didn't like what he saw and asked Perez to recycle. Bauer continued to disagree. Alexei asked for, and was granted, time. Perez visited

the mound.

That the pitcher and catcher took the time to get on exactly the same page proved enormous.

Bauer threw a slider on the outside corner that Alexei popped foul to the right. The next pitch was the curve that bounced in front of the plate and got Alexei to chase.

Back at it: Kipnis went 2-for-4 with a triple, HBP and the two runs. He has reached safely at least three times in nine of his past 10 games.

In the series opener Monday, Kipnis was 0-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt. It snapped his hitting streak at nine games.

Both of Kipnis's hits Tuesday came against Quintana. Lefties entered the night at 3-for-32 against Q.

Cleveland Indians, Trevor Bauer beat Chicago White Sox, 3-1

Paul Hoynes, May 19, 2015

CHICAGO -- It wasn't exactly deja vu all over again, but it was close.

Trevor Bauer had a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning Tuesday night when manager Terry Francona went to the bullpen.

In his last start, Bauer had a 1-0 lead with one out and one on in the eighth when Francona hooked him for left-hander Marc Rzepczynski to face Matt Carpenter.

Bauer had struck out Carpenter three straight times, but Francona went for the left-on-left matchup.

Carpenter hit a two-run homer to give St. Louis a 2-1 victory.

This time the Indians prevailed, 3-1, to end the White Sox's six-game winning streak. Still, the eighth inning had to make a lot of people nervous.

Bryan Shaw relieved Bauer with one on and one out to face power-hitting Jose Abreu. Catcher Roberto Hernandez's passed ball moved Adam Eaton to second and

Shaw issued Abreu an unintentional intentional walk with first base open.

Enter Rzepczynski in another late-inning left-on-left matchup. This time Rzepcysnki got his man, striking out Adam LaRoche.

Closer Cody Allen ended the inning with a strikeout of Conor Gillaspie on his way to a four-out save.

In three starts against Chicago this season, Bauer is 2-0 with a 1.33 ERA (two earned runs, 20 1/3 innings). He's struck out 21, walked nine and allowed 2 hits.

Page 26: Club: Cleveland Indians Level of Play: MAJ Position Type ...mlb.mlb.com/documents/1/3/2/125548132/Reds_vs_Indians_d1...Kessler, Joe H CC 06/09/1981 Stngth & Cond Coach Desjardins,

Bauer (3-1, 3.31) allowed one run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked three. He has allowed two runs in 14 2/3 innings over his last two

starts.

The Tribe's victory came at the expense of left-hander Jose Quintana (2-4, 4.13). He came into the game with a 4-0 lifetime record against the Tribe. It's hard to say

they knocked him around, but they did beat him.

The Indians took a 2-1 lead in the fifth with two outs on a single by Jason Kipnis and Jose Ramirez's double into the left field corner.

Quintana retired the first two batters when Kipnis singled to short for his second hit of the night. In Monday's 2-1 loss, the Indians left-handed hitters went 1-for-10

against Chicago lefties Chris Sale and Zach Duke.

In the sixth, the Indians missed a chance to add to their lead with some poor hitting in the clutch.

Ryan Raburn singled and Nick Swisher walked to start the inning. Mike Aviles advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, but Brandon Moss grounded out to first.

Roberto Perez kept the inning going by drawing a bases-loaded walk, but Michael Bourn sent a tapper back to the mound for the third out.

Moss gave Bauer and Francona a cushion to work with when he homered in the eighth for a 3-1 lead. It was his sixth of the season, but just his second this month.

The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the first when Kipnis tripled over Avisail Garcia's head in right to start the inning. Garcia got a bad jump on the ball.

Until the triple, Quintana had retired 25 straight left-handed batters. After Jose Ramirez walked, Michael Brantley scored Kipnis on a sacrifice fly to center.

The White Sox tied the score, 1-1, on Garcia's single in the in the fourth. Bauer started the game with 10 straight outs, but lost the plate with two out in the fourth.

Abreu doubled and LaRoche walked. Garcia's single to center to made it 1-1 and Bauer loaded the bases by walking Gillaspie. He ended the inning by striking out

dangerous Alexei Ramirez

What it means

The Indians ended their two-game losing streak and improved to 3-2 on this seven-game trip.

They also improved to 5-10 in games started by lefties.

Chicago lost for just the fourth time in the last 11 games. They're 4-3 against the Indians this season

A step too far

After drawing a walk in the first, Ramirez stole second. With Raburn at the plate and the Tribe leading, 1-0, he broke for third, but as Quintana spun and threw to

second to pick him off.

It was just the second time Ramirez has been caught in eight steal attempts.

Stories from the road

Chicago ended Bauer's 16-inning scoreless streak on the road in the fourth on Garcia's RBI single that tied the score at 1.

The 16-inning scoreless streak on the road to start the season tied Wayne Garland for the fourth longest in team history by a starting pitcher. Bob Feller is the club

leader with 19 innings in 1946, while Stan Coveleski and Bert Blyleven are tied for second at 17 innings.

What happens next?

Shaun Marcum will make his first start in the the big leagues in almost two years on Wednesday night when he faces Chicago rookie Carlos Rodon (1-0, 4.98) at 8:10

p.m. at U.S. Cellular Field.

Marcum did make a five-inning relief appearance for the Tribe on April 12. He's spent the rest of the season at Class AAA Columbus where he went 4-0 with a 1.36

ERA.

Rodon made his big-league debut against the Indians on April 21. He did so as a reliever. This will be his sixth appearance and third start for the White Sox.

Akron RubberDucks fall in 11 innings to New Britain Rock Cats

Cliff Pinckard, Northeast Ohio Media Group

New Britain outfielder Mike Tauchman singled with two outs in the top of the 11th to bring in what turned out to be the winning run Tuesday as the RubberDucks fell,

4-3, to the Rock Cats at Canal Park in Akron.

Akron reliever Grant Sides (0-3, 4.43 ERA) struck out the first Rock Cats batter to start the 11th before putting a runner on with a walk. However, the RubberDucks

looked to be in good shape after catcher Jake Lowery threw out the runner trying to steal second.

But Sides again walked a batter, and this time the runner was able to successfully steal second. Tauchman then delivered with an RBI single, his only hit on a 1-for-6

night.

The RubberDucks had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, but first baseman Jeremy Lucas grounded out to second to end the game.

The RubberDucks took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning. Outfielder Jordan Smith had an RBI single in the second, third baseman Yandy Diaz brought in a run with a

groundout in the fourth after shortstop Erik Gonzalez tripled, and Lowery had an RBI double in the fifth.

Akron starter Mike Clevinger gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits in five innings in the no-decision. The RubberDucks used six pitchers in the game.

New Britain reliever Austin Gonzalez (1-0, 1.13) pitched 2/3 of an inning, striking out both batters he faced. Austin House got his 14th save.
