Education 21 Cultural Sensitivity 10 Self-Awareness 27
Leadership 25 Innovation and Entrepreneurship 5 Professionalism 30

Questions to ponder while reflecting upon activities/experiences: Why was this experience meaningful to you? How can you apply what you learned to your future? How has this experience shaped your view of your role as a future pharmacist? What about the experience further motivated you to pursue a pharmaceutical career? What about the experience concerned you in regard to pharmaceutical careers? Considering the categories of co-curricular activities what do you think you gained from the
experience? What did you learn about yourself from the experience? What about your performance in this
experience demonstrates this? How can you integrate this experience to other experiences you've had?
Describe your growth over the last year and/or an identified need for improvement in each of the categories listed below.
Education: During my second year of pharmacy school, I was able to use what I have learned in the classroom and educate the community regarding their health through multiple volunteer events. Two particular occasions that I had the opportunity to gain experience in education was through volunteering at Seventh Day Adventist Church and the Cone Health Flu Shot Clinic. While we have practiced counseling and educating in class, it was much more meaningful and taught me a lot more to apply it in a real-life setting. It was so rewarding to talk to patients and help them better understand what their particular blood pressure and blood sugar levels actually mean. In addition, I was able to counsel patients on lifestyle changes to improve their overall health. The ability to convey information in a manner that is understandable and empathetic will be essential as a future pharmacist. I am grateful for the opportunity to practice and develop the skill of educating by serving those in our local community.
Cultural Sensitivity: Through living and serving in the Triad area, I have been exposed to cultural differences in our diverse community. The majority of co-curricular activities I participated in throughout the year involved engaging with underserved individuals at local events. Pharmacists are recognized as an accessible, healthcare resource for individuals who do not have adequate access to healthcare. Culture and language barriers will always exist in health care, so it is so important to have experience with diverse cultures in order to overcome barriers and provide the best possible care to all patients, regardless of their background. One activity in particular that has allowed me to gain cultural sensitivity is the Med Assist OTC Giveaway. Individuals from High Point and surrounding areas are able to receive free OTC medications, as well as have their blood pressure and blood glucose readings assessed. It has given me a chance to recognize the importance of having patience and showing empathy to the all ages and cultures. It is extremely rewarding and has given me a sense of helpfulness to be able to give back to a community that is in need.
Self-Awareness: By practicing the skills I learned in the classroom at various community events, I have recognized my strengths and weaknesses as a student. One weakness I have worked on this year is trusting my skills when checking a patient’s blood pressure and giving immunizations. It can be intimidating when something doesn’t go as planned in a real-life setting, so it’s important to know how to overcome setbacks and learn from mistakes. As I gained experience in these areas, I have improved my techniques and started to feel more comfortable and confident in my ability to efficiently perform these tasks. My involvement with the NC Med Assist OTC Medication Giveaway each year has helped me develop necessary skills when counseling and interacting with patients. It is essential to show empathy and respect when communicating with patients to gain their trust and loyalty. As a future pharmacist, I will continue to have to develop this skill because all interactions will require some level of self-awareness in order to establish effective relationships with patients.
Leadership: The theme of leadership has been present in a majority of my co-curricular activities this year as well. Serving as the ASHP-SSHP Vice President of Finance this past year has taught me how to effectively work with other executive committee members to plan events based on our available budget, as well as recruit members through membership drives and meetings to become more involved in our organization. While leadership is often misinterpreted as merely delegating tasks or being in charge, it is really about influencing and inspiring others in a beneficial way. I also served as an ambassador again this past year to represent FWSOP in a positive, professional way. As an ambassador, I facilitated high school students processing prescriptions, compounding calamine lotion and preparing capsules at a Camp Med event over the summer. Through these involvements, I have gained more confidence in my ability to lead and realized the importance of building relationships. The individuals we interact with often view us as very knowledgeable healthcare professionals, so it is important to continue to improve in this area as I get more experience.
Innovation: Innovation is an outcome I feel that I have greatly improved on this year by serving as the founding Vice President of Finance for ASHP-SSHP. I have had the opportunity to help lead body meetings and collaborate with other members within our chapter in order to collectively find new ways to enhance our involvement in the community. During our Toastmasters Workshop, we learned necessary soft skills of effective communication in an integrated healthcare environment. We can work together better as a team and with patients in the community with these acquired skills. At another SSHP event this semester, two speakers from Cone Health spoke about recognizing signs and symptoms of burnout while in pharmacy school and in practice, as well as identified mechanisms to prevent and deal with fatigue. Throughout this year, we have overcome many challenges and setbacks involved with starting a new organization. It has taken a lot of hard work and commitment to establish our chapter and officially be recognized by HPU. I feel privileged to attend a pharmacy school that has many opportunities for new clubs and organizations.
Professionalism: Professionalism was practiced and established in all co-curricular activities this year. While participating in these service events, it was essential to be competent, knowledgeable and respectful while exhibiting integrity. At the APPE Zone Fair, other pharmacy ambassadors and myself interacted with visiting preceptors for APPE rotations through pharmacy themed, carnival games. I did my best to show kindness and respect to all individuals I encountered as well as my peers during this event. It is always best to make a positive impact whenever possible because you never know who you may encounter again in the future. In addition, I participated in an etiquette dinner hosted by SSHP where we learned how to dress/act professionally during a lunch or dinner interview. A guest pharmacist sat at each table of students, so we had the opportunity to practice appropriate conversation starters and mannerisms as we ate dinner. It is important to exhibit professionalism whether in the classroom, pharmacy or in the community.
