CLOTHES AND AJECTIVES
Adjectives are used to describe a word
For example: a little dress a yellow t-shirt
In English, adjectives go before the word they describe
For example: a blue jumper
In French, most adjectives go after the word they describe
For example: un pull bleu
OK so far?
There’s another difference between French and English adjectives
You remember that French words are either masculine (le or un words) or feminine (la or une words)
Can you think of 2 examples of clothes that are masculine and 2 that are feminine?
un T-shirt un pantalonune jupe une chemise
Well, in French the adjective will change according to whether the word they describe is masculine or feminine
I’ll show you what I mean
Un pull bleu – une jupe bleue
Can you see the difference?
That’s right! When the word is feminine, you need to add an extra “e” at the end of the adjective
Let’s practise!
a green shirt -une chemise ……une chemise verte
a black skirt - une jupe noireune jupe …..
Still with me so far?
Let’s learn some new adjectives!!!

Now, what if the adjective already has a “e” at the end?
Can you think of some colours in French that finish with an “e”?
That’s right!
rougejauneorangerose
So what happens when these adjectives are used to describe a feminine word?
Do we add an second “e”?
NO!!!
We just leave it as it is!
For example:
Une jupe rouge (a red skirt)
Un pull rouge (a red jumper)
Let’s practise!!

an orange skirt une jupe orange

Blanc turns into blanche when used with a feminine word
a white T-shirt

Long turns into longue when used with a feminine word
