Returning to the New Normal Prune /pro͞on/ καθαίρει G2508 verb - cut away (a branch or stem); reduce the ex-tent of (something) by removing superfluous or unwanted parts Abide /uh-bahyd/ μείνατε G3306 verb – remain; submit “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vineyard keeper. Every branch in Me that does not produce He removes, and He prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit” ( John 15:1-2). Amid incomparable change, infec-tion fear and trepidation, hear Christ describe our vital connection with Him and the work He does to direct new, healthy growth. Many of you have heard me state that now is not a time of pause (understanding that we have had wonderful oppor-tunity to focus on our relationship with God less encumbered by interruptions during our national quarantine) but rather a clearly divine time of pruning in the lives of our churches and ongoing spiritual transformation! The story/song of the vine in Isaiah 5 is a narrative of disobedience, judg-ment, and in Isaiah 27, of eschatological redemp-tion. So, understand the necessity and activity of the vinedresser. Allow Him to remove unfruitful branches in His church and in your life as well as prune the fruitful branches. Under both conditions, pruning and removal, allow God to discipline you well! Many of us have been struggling with our inability to remain as busy as we would like. Well, allowing God to fulfill His pruning, as well as abiding in Christ, will give you real purpose. John goes on to say, “You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me” (John 15:3-4). Let me challenge you to take stock in your life and church. How much of what you do qualifies as the byproduct of pruning and abiding? Review your spiritual income and expense statement…looking honestly at your overall performance. Being busy is a badge of honor in our society…a way to con-vince ourselves we are significant and important. But busyness does not equal productivity or performance. We do not find ultimate purpose in what we do. Purpose is more personal. Finding purpose is about knowing Christ the Person and allowing Him to share your life. Real life…deep, meaningful, satisfying life…comes from connect-ing to Jesus and allowing His life to flow through yours. Life change must happen…and continue to
happen…as proof of conversion. To bear fruit means leading people to Jesus (John 4:36), serving them in Jesus’ name (Matthew 7:16-20), AND devel-oping the character of Christ (Galatians 5:22-23). This is pruning leading to directed new, healthy growth. Wayne Grudem, in his systematic theology, notes God’s active role in our sanctification and our passive participation (if we get out of the way). He also says there are no short-cuts…there must be Bible reading, prayer, worship, witnessing, fellow-ship, self-discipline, and self-control. (Grudem, Sys-tematic Theology, Ch. 38: Sanctification (Inter-Varsity: 1994) 755. As we return to the new normal…do not miss the opportunity to prune as well as strengthen your abid-ing in Him!
