June 13th – The first day we took a self directed tour of the Sleeping Bear Shoreline and National Park. It was a beautiful area and great to enjoy with friends. The highlight was a view of the lake from 450 ft. above the water. We had lunch along the way and enjoyed a look around the many tourist towns in the area.

(A Trip to the Packard National) (continued from page 1)

June 14th – We took the bus tour to Mackinac Island along with just about everyone attending the event. There were four bus loads of folks. It was a cool day and warm clothes were necessary. As I waited to board a carriage, I was greeted by John Bowron from Luverne. John and his wife drove to the event in their ’49 sedan. The group took a horse drawn tour of the island from some entertaining coach drivers. We had lunch at the Grand Hotel (delicious food and impressive location).

June 15th – Meeting day. I attended several. The organization doesn’t have plans in place for a meet in 2018 so they encouraged regions to consider hosting the event. Craig Handley has assumed the leadership role as President in addition to publishing the montly bulletin. For those who registered early, there was a trip on the sailing ship, Manitou, on Lake Michigan. I was late, so I attended the alternative event viewing a local resto/storage/sales/repair facility. They served us various types of ice cream and had a great car colletion to take a look at.

Some cool ‘50s Packards John amd Donna Ward checked out some of the cool cars

In addition to these cars, the main offices for Hagerty have some very nice Packards, including Margret Dunnings 1930 740 coupe roadster, a Gold anniversary ’49 and a ’25 phaeton.

June 16th – We took a driving tour on the Old Mission Peninsula. This was beautiful country overlooking Grand Travese Bay, with interesting wineries and small towns. The highlight for car folks was Bill Shultz’s collection of classics, most of which were Packards.

Minnesota Packards 2016 Events — SAVE THIS DATE!Tom Brace is arranging the following event, please plan on joining us in the fall!

Go to your Calendar and mark off September 30-October 2, 2016. You are invited to a Fall leaf tour in Rochester, Minnesota. Our Iowa Packard friends along with the Upper Midwest Region of the Classic Car Club of America will also join us. We will be staying at the Kahler Apache Hotel. This hotel was the site of a recent Professional Car Society annual meeting and offers plenty of space to park just for our Packards.

You will make your own reservations at 1-507-289-8866 using the name Packard Club. The price is $97.00/night plus taxes. This block will be held until August 30, 2016. I think that you will agree with me that the price is right.

We will travel the blue line roads through some of the most scenic areas of Minnesota. A number of stops will be made along the Mississippi such as Winona and the Minnesota Maritime Museum and the Watkins Museum. Mantorville will also figure into the weekend, as well as one of the most famous restaurants in the entire area (The Hubbell House).

We will have two group meals and the other meals will be on your own with some suggested locations. The cost for the meals should be moderate, and we will follow up with a mailing with those details.

Several years ago, the Pierce Arrow Society held their annual meet in Rochester and we have engaged their tour planner to help lay out a great weekend. Mr. David Sandels has agreed to assist us in route creation. We will also have a trouble truck with us for those who would like some additional security.

You are going to hear more about this weekend in the near future. We are anxious that you record this great tour as a must event for the 2016 Summer. Any Packard is welcome and we are going to have a lot of fun.

The Classic Club Garage Tour 2016 We were favored with a fine day for weather. It’s always exciting to get our cars out in the spring and hit the road. We gathered at Unique Autos on Hwy 65, a new classic car dealership, to see their selection of classics and muscle cars for sale. The Packard Club, the Cadillac Club and other folks in UMRCCCA had a chance to visit with other car enthusiasts while enjoying a cup of coffee and some rolls before setting out to see some interesting collections.

There were some interesting cars for sale. If the ‘55 Clipper looks good, it’s for sale Packard fans!

After everyone was gathered, we hit the road. The first stop was Rogers Hot Rod Shop, a full service facility doing customs which are very popular in Minnesota. We had a look at some work in progress.

From Rogers we moved on to the Gene Hetland Collection. Gene may be the number one fan of ’32 Fords in the country. He has a beautiful estate and an extensive collection of cars along with every sort of dealer item that can be imagined, including a table service of china with the Ford logo. I asked him how long he has been collecting. He’s been at it for 45 years. He keeps cars in 4 buildings and in his basement. This was an impressive collection.

In addition to cars, Gene has a Civil War vintage Field Artillery Brass Cannon. We were treated to a demo – LOUD!

From Hetland’s we moved on to the Gene Biskey collection. Mr. B has a passion for Chryslers and has an extensive collection of Prewar Cars. He has been working to house them over the course of the last few years in a building in downtown Isanti. It was a good place to view these wonderful cars.

(The Classic Club Car Tour 2016) (continued from page 5)

From Biskey’s we moved on to Lares Corporation in Princeton. Paul Lares is an enthusiast and supporter of the hobby as one of the leading facilites in the country rebuilding steering components. They take on most anything from 1905 on and recondition it for reuse. They also do a lot of heavy truck components. Paul was nice enough to provide pizza for our group of about 150. We toured his operation and enjoyed visiting over lunch.

After Lunch, we moved on to Jack and Joann Ross’ home. Joann’s father was a car enthusiast and passed down his interest to family members. They have some interesting old cars, including a Cord, in their collection.

The group moved on, but sadly I experienced some difficulty with my Clipper’s heater control valve (which wasn’t serious), that prevented me from seeing the the last two garages personally. Here are some of the photos from Larry Loken’s collection and the Steve Whitaker collection. Thanks to all the owners and our friends in UMRCCCA for including us in a great event.

June 17th – Show Day. The cars were on display at the Music Museum (which had mechnical music devices from the last century). The cars on show were great – many immaculate automobiles of every vintage, way more than can be included here. Friend me on Facebook to see them all if you’re interested. Here are some highlights.

The circular drive with judged cars Don Sommer’s car A lovely selection of 50s cars at the center

This Packard paced the 1915 Indy Car Race. This car is a 1908 that has been owned by the same family for 108 years. The owner gave rides during the show. It was in very rough shape but was a facinating time capsule.

The banquet concluded the week’s fun and many awards were presented. The company was great as always.

June 18th – John and I hit the road and made good time, so we decided to keep moving. We made it back to the Cities around midnight – a long day but a great week. There was some talk about going to the meet in South Bend next year. If you’re considering this, let’s talk. Great events like this should be somewhere on the bucket list for Packard folks.
