This is a phenomenal set of speakers presented by the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention. Dr. Trivedi is a renown psychiatrist especially in the area of exercise and depression. Dr. Thornton is excellent as well.

Conference Directors:

Adam Brenner, M.D.Dr. Brenner is an Associate Professor and Distinguished Teaching Professor at UT Southwestern, and Director of Residency Training and Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Psychiatry. He completed his medical degree and residency at Harvard Medical School, and psychoanalytic training at the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Brenner’s clinical work integrates psychoanalysis and general psychiatry, and his scholarly work focuses on the education of medical students and residents in psychiatry.

Laura Howe-Martin, Ph.D.Dr. Howe-Martin joined the faculty at UT Southwestern in 2009 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry after receiving her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of North Texas. Dr. Howe-Martin currently sees patients and supervises trainees within Consult-Liaison Psychiatry at Parkland Hospital and at the Moncrief Cancer Institute in Fort Worth. She also teaches Advanced Abnormal Psychology within the UT Southwestern Clinical Psychology doctoral program.

Peggy MarshallA business consultant for strategic growth, the trajectory of Peggy’s life changed dramatically with the death of her husband by suicide. She started the local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and serves as Chair of the Board of Directors. Studying suicide and bereavement, she creates platforms to share insights and build communities for healing. On a national level, she serves on the Survivors Council for AFSP. She planned the first Survivors of Suicide Day Conference in Dallas and the annual conference is the largest in the country. She was selected as one of four survivors to be featured in a 90-minute film simultaneously broadcast at more than 275 conferences. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Texas Christian University.

Charles Vorkoper, LCSW, LMFT, LPCCharles is in private practice as a licensed social worker and counselor. He serves as President of the newly formed North Texas Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). His extensive experience in the field of suicide prevention and loss includes serving on the team that developed a Suicide Prevention Plan for Texas, working as Executive Director of the Suicide Prevention Center in Dallas and providing leadership in the American Association Suicidology on the Clinicial Survivors of Suicide Loss program as well as a conference presenter. He earned a Master of Science in Social Work from the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Speakers:

Kimberly Roaten, Ph.D.Dr. Roaten joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry after completing her doctoral degree at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Roaten is a psychologist with the Consult-Liaison Psychiatry team and provides evaluation

and psychotherapy services at Parkland Memorial Hospital and UT Southwestern University Hospitals. Her primary research interest is the evaluation and management of patients at risk for self-directed violence and she is a co-investigator on several projects involving collaboration with researchers nationwide in an effort to study the clinical characteristics associated with self-inflicted injuries. Dr. Roaten is currently leading the work group tasked with development and implementation of the system-wide suicide screening and risk assessment plan for Parkland Health and Hospital System.

W. Larry Thornton, M.D.Dr. Thornton is a Professor of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center and on the Faculty at the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center. He is Director of the Department of Psychiatry’s Faculty Practice and a recipient of numerous teaching awards from psychiatry residents. He completed his medical degree and residency at UT Southwestern. His clinical work focuses primarily on individuals with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, character disorders, and histories of trauma. He is particularly interested in the ways in which psychoanalysis, philosophy, history and literature may inform one another. His recent scholarly work has focused on integrating psychoanalytic, existential, and Buddhist influences in the care of patients.

Madhukar Trivedi, M.D.Dr. Trivedi is currently Professor and Chief of the Division of Mood Disorders at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and holds the Betty Jo Hay Distinguished Chair in Mental Health. Dr. Trivedi is an established efficacy and effectiveness researcher in the treatment of depression. Dr. Trivedi has received numerous awards including the Gerald L. Klerman award from the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association Scientific Advisory Board (NDMDA) and the Psychiatric Excellence Award from the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians (TSPP).

Sidney Zisook, M.D.Dr. Zisook is a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Research Scientist at the San Diego VA Healthcare System and director of the UCSD Residency Training Program. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Berkeley and his medical degree from Stritch-Loyola, Chicago. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and was a clinical fellow of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Zisook’s research centers around mood as both a primary and secondary manifestation/disorder. Current research projects include: 1) psychotherapeutic and pharmacological interventions for complicated grief (aka persistent complex bereavement disorder); 2) treating complicated grief in suicide survivors; 3)interventions for treatment resistant depression; and 4) preventing physician suicide.

Who Should AttendThis course is designed for physicians, psychologists, LPCs, social workers, residents, fellows, students, and other mental health professionals interested in learning about suicide prevention and suicide bereavement.Purpose and ContentThis course will provide clinicians with education and resources about suicide prevention and suicide bereavement that they can use with their clients. It will also help equip clinicians to deal personally with suicide loss.

Educational ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, participants should:Recognize the components of the revised National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and the priorities of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention relative to the clinician community.

• Identify the differences between suicide bereavement and bereavement from other causes of death. Know what community resources are available to recommend to patients/clients in addition to counseling.

• Be better equipped to recognize suicide loss survivors who are experiencing complicated grief and be able to treat them with evidenced based practices based on new research studies.

• Apply measurement based protocols for treating patients/clients with suicidal ideation.

• Formulate new insights about how to deal with the personal impact of working with patients/clients who are suicidal or struggling with suicide loss. Know what resources are available.
