India has different climates. In the South, the climate ismainly tropical, which means it can get very hot insummer and cool in winter. The northern part, though, hasa cooler climate, called sub-tropical, and even alpine inmountainous regions. The Himalayas, in the alpine climateregion, can get extremely cold. There is veryheavy rainfall along the west coast and in the EasternHimalayan foothills. The west, though, is drier. Because ofsome of the deserts of India, all of India gets rain for fourmonths of the year. That time is called the monsoon. Thatis so because the deserts attract water-filled winds from

the Indian Ocean, which give rain when they come intoIndia. When the monsoon rains come late or not soheavily, droughts (when the land wears out because thereis less rain) are possible.

The region receives rain and snow precipitationthrough two primary weather patterns: theIndian Monsoon and the Western Disturbances. TheMonsoon carries moisture northwards from the Indian

Ocean, occurs in late summer and is important tothe Kharif or autumn harvest. Western Disturbances,on the other hand, are an extratropical weatherphenomenon that carry moisture eastwards fromthe Mediterranean Sea, the Caspian Sea andthe Atlantic Ocean. They primarily occur during the

winter season and are critically important for the Rabior spring harvest, which includes the main staple overmuch of North India, wheat. The states of Jammuand Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhandreceive sustained snowfall in winter months
