Step oneMaking the Commitment to yourself

The very first thing we are going to do is have you separate thepast from the present.

Today begins a new era in your life. You are leaving thepast behind. You are going to vow to yourself that you willnot carry any of your past disappointments any longer.Hanging on to past judgments, failures, fears, preconceived notions, and self-doubt have no place inyour life any more. They are old useless thoughts that willonly hold you back from empowering yourself andbecoming the successful individual you want to be.

Make a written commitment to yourself now that you are no longer going to carry anyof these kinds of thoughts with you any longer. This step alone, when faithfully adheredto will elevate your happiness to remarkable levels. Take out a pen and paper rightnow. Don’t do this on a computer, unless you print it out. Make this decision tangibleby writing it down. In your own words, state how you will no longer use this king ofthinking.

Here’s an example:

I, ____________________________________[ your name here ]

vow never to let past disappointments discourage me any longer. I will not carry pastdiscouragements into my present thinking. I will not hang on to past judgments, failures, fears, preconceived notions, and self-doubt any longer. They have no place inmy life any more. This way of thinking will only hold me back from empowering myself and becoming thesuccessful individual I want to be. From here on in, I will expect to get the outcomes Iwant in life and when I meet with obstacles that stand in the way, I will figure a wayaround them and keep my attention focused on the outcome I want and reject thenotion an obstacle has the power to keep me from my goal. I will succeed.

Signed __________________________________________[Fill in your name]

This exercise is far more important than you realize.

Once you finish, move on to the next step.

Step Two:

Determine if you are you a “River Person” or a “Goal Person?”

There are two types of successful people, the “river” people and “goal” people.

A goal person is someone who knows exactly what career path that they want to followat a relatively young age. They generally set their sights on their goal early in life. Youoften see this with people in the arts, such as actors, musicians, inventors andinnovators. They have a long-term vision for exactly what they want to do and how theyenvision their life being once they get there. Bill Gates and Steven Jobs were examplesof goal people.

Are you a goal person? Do you know exactly what you want to do?Wealth is usually the byproduct of accomplishing something you arepassionate about.

River people seem to have their pathpick them.

They have the passion and determinationto be successful but are not clear how it isgoing to happen. It’s very important riverpeople live in the moment and don’t allowthe past to bog them down because riverpeople need to keep a keen eye out foropportunity when it knocks. That requiresan open mind and, very often, quite asense of adventure.

How self-doubt holds us back but not for long! You can skip this next part, yet you might find my story about being a river person to behelpful. Sometimes a simple story is the very thing we need to help us elevate ourselvesto higher levels of confidence and accomplishment.

This story addresses a critically important challenge we all face at one time or another in our lives. You see, at some point we all face that gap between where we are and where we want to be. Wequestion our ability to get where we want to go, usually because we don’t have the confidence totackle what’s lies ahead.

This story addresses that turning point in our life and that lack of confidence, and unveils the truecapabilities that lie inside all of us. Even if we don’t believe we have those capabilities, they arewaiting for us to uncover them.

How life experiences shape our confidence

I had a disruptive childhood. My father was constantly moving our family of nine aroundthe country. I had attended seven different schools before I graduated high school . . . andI considered myself extremely lucky to graduate.

You see, I felt inferior to other kids because my grades were always poor. I didn’t realizehow much my constant moving negatively impacted my education.

By the age of 31, I was living in a tree housein Florida. My only source of income wasplaying in a band and working odd jobs as ahandyman. I earned only enough to feedmyself and buy gas for my truck.

One night, when I was sleeping in the treehouse, a huge storm hit. The tree began tomove so much that the tent I had pitched on aflat platform almost knocked me out of thetree . . . and it was almost 30 feet to theground.

I realized the next day that my life had to change. It was a life rifewith discontent. I decided I wanted to go a new direction in life. Ijust didn’t know how to go about making it happen, or even whichdirection I wanted to go.

Desire attracts opportunity

The right circumstances alwaysseem to arise when we have amindset that prepares us to actwhen opportunity knocks.

Shortly after that storm encounter, I madea spontaneous decision to travel toChicago to visit my family for Christmas.

I managed to scrape together enoughmoney for a plane ticket so I could visit myfamily and to see some great blues bandswhile I was in town.

But the day I arrived it was 60 degrees belowzero. It was simply too cold to walk arounddowntown Chicago.

That cold weather was truly a blessing in disguise.

My brother happened to be living in Chicago and was running a construction crew fora world-renown personal development publishing company. They had just bought anew building and were remodeling it. I could use the extra cash, so I asked mybrother to put me to work for a few days, which he did.

The first morning on the job, I asked if I could listen to one of the programs thiscompany sold while I worked. I always had a Walkman wherever I went. It was thatWalkman that turned out to be a “miracle machine” for me.

The program I listened to was about self-esteem and self-confidence. I had neverlearned anything like this before and the information “flipped a switch” in me. Up untilthen, I didn’t have a very high opinion of my abilities. But my desire to create positivechange motivated me in ways I hadn’t experienced before. That storm caused me tochange my mind, and that decision was about to change my life.

The great discovery

The manager who hired my brother noticed an energy in me that was admirable,so he offered me a job in the new manufacturing department, even though I had noexperience in that area.

To make a long story short, I went to work for that reputable 50-year-old companyand excelled at my new job. The programs they sold were teaching me how tothink, how to contribute, how to make the things happen for me that I wanted. Itwas like finding a magic genie.

Don’t get me wrong, tough challenges faced me constantly. But I never worriedabout the challenge; I kept my focus on the result I wanted on the other side of thatchallenge.

It wasn’t long before I set my sites on moving to another department.

I listened to one program after another . . . frommorning until bed time. In a way, it was like findingenergizing mind nourishment for the first time in mylife.

I volunteered to edit the programs from 6 modulesdown to 2 for the company’s new expansion intoretail. I expected to be paid, but was told “no.” So,I simply volunteered to do the job for no pay. Iwas determined to prove I could do the job . . .and I did. I was immediately transferred to theproduct development department.

I had discovered personal developmentinformation, and I made great use of it to help mycareer and to help grow the company.

Ultimately, I became the CEO of that great company . . . allbecause I listened, learned, applied what I learned andcontributed to the success of others along the way.

From aimless wanderer toconfident and accomplished

The bottom line is this: I started as an aimlesswanderer and by embracing and applying ideas Inever learned in school, I became successful, confident and accomplished. The very same ideasanyone can learn from Napoleon Hill's life-changinginformation.

Success isn’t limited to the intelligent andadvantaged. I have so much respect for thetremendous potential of the human mind . . . yourmind. I truly believe everyone has the capacity to bebrilliant.

All I did was learn ideas I knew made sense, ideasthat I could apply every day of my life. If I can do it, socan you.

So, are you a river person or a goal person? If you are a riverperson, give plenty of energy and thought toward the kind of lifeyou want to be living.

Paint a crystal clear vision of how your days will look. What kindof house will you be living in? What kind of car will you bedriving? How much love will you feel in your heart? Then wait foryour path to pick you.

Step 3:

Desire: The Starting Point of All Achievement

Now it’s time to get down to the meat ofthe matter.

Andrew Carnegie moved to the United States a pauperand went on to become the richest man in the world. Hespent the first part of his life making a fortune, then thesecond half giving it away. His vision for a systemanyone could use to become wealthy is considered to behis most significant contribution. Who better qualified thanthe richest man in the world to map out a legitimateapproach to building wealth?

Recruited by Carnegie to take on theexecution of this important task,Napoleon Hill devoted 20 years tomaking sure he had the right wealthbuilding information to offer, then thenext ten years getting the validationthat it worked.

Think and Grow Rich is the result.

The Power of Desire

Desire is the fuel that propels you forward to achieving your goals. It’s the magic elixirthat helps turn your thoughts into reality. Please study these life-changing principalsuncovered by Napoleon Hill in his many years of research.

Below are excerpts taken from Think and Grow Rich,by Napoleon Hill

One must realize that all who have accumulated great fortunes first did a certainamount of dreaming, hoping, wishing, DESIRING, and PLANNING before theyacquired money.

You may as well know, right here, that you can never have riches in great quantities,UNLESS you can work yourself into a white heat of DESIRE for money, and actuallyBELIEVE you will possess it.

You may as well know, also that every great leader, from the dawn of civilizationdown to the present, was a dreamer.

Verily, a BURNING DESIRE has devious ways of transmuting itself into its physicalequivalent. Strange and imponderable is the power of the human mind! We do notunderstand the method by which it uses every circumstance, every individual, everyphysical thing within its reach, as a means of transmuting DESIRE into its physicalcounterpart.

Early in her career, Madam Schuman-Heink visited the director of the Vienna CourtOpera, to have him test her voice. But, he did not test it. After taking one look at theawkward and poorly dressed girl, he exclaimed, none too gently, "With such a face, and with no personality at all, how can you ever expect to succeed in opera? Mygood child, give up the idea. Buy a sewing machine, and go to work. YOU CANNEVER BE A SINGER."

Never is a long time! The director of the Vienna Court Opera knew much about thetechnique of singing. He knew little about the power of desire, when it assumes theproportion of an obsession. If he had known more of that power, he would not havemade the mistake of condemning genius without giving it an opportunity.

The Power of Desire Continued

Excerpts taken from Think and Grow Rich,by Napoleon Hill

Several years ago, one of my business associates became ill. He became worse astime went on, and finally was taken to the hospital for an operation. Just before he waswheeled into the operating room, I took a look at him, and wondered how anyone asthin and emaciated as he, could possibly go through a major operation successfully. The doctor warned me that there was little, if any, chance of my ever seeing him aliveagain.

But that was the DOCTOR'S OPINION.

It was not the opinion of the patient. Just before he was wheeled away, he whisperedfeebly, "Do not be disturbed, Chief, I will be out of here in a few days." The attendingnurse looked at me with pity. But the patient did come through safely. After it was allover, his physician said, "Nothing but his own desire to live saved him. He never wouldhave pulled through if he had not refused to accept the possibility of death."

I believe in the power of DESIRE backed by FAITH, because I have seen this power liftmen from lowly beginnings to places of power and wealth; I have seen it rob the graveof its victims; I have seen it serve as the medium by which men staged a comebackafter having been defeated in a hundred different ways; I have seen it provide my ownson with a normal, happy, successful life, despite Nature's having sent him into theworld without ears.

How can one harness and use the power of DESIRE?

All achievement, no matter what may be its nature, or its purpose, must begin with anintense, BURNING DESIRE for something definite.Through some strange and powerful principle of "mental chemistry" which she hasnever divulged, Nature wraps up in the impulse of STRONG DESIRE "that something"which recognizes no such word as impossible, and accepts no such reality as failure.

Step four:Faith Visualization of, and Belief in Attainment of Desire

The next step toward riches, FAITH, is thehead chemist of the mind. When FAITH isblended with the vibration of thought, thesubconscious mind instantly picks up thevibration, translates it into its spiritualequivalent, and transmits it to InfiniteIntelligence, as in the case of prayer.

As an illustration, consider the purpose for which you are, presumably, reading this book. The object is, naturally, to acquire the ability to transmute the intangible thought impulse ofDESIRE into its physical counterpart, money. By following the instructions laid down onauto-suggestion, and the subconscious mind, you may CONVINCE the subconscious mindthat you believe you will receive that for which you ask, and it will act upon that belief, which your subconscious mind passes back to you in the form of "FAITH," followed bydefinite plans for procuring that which you desire.

The method by which one develops FAITH, where it does not already exist, is extremelydifficult to describe, almost as difficult, in fact, as it would be to describe the color of red toa blind man who has never seen color, and has nothing with which to compare what youdescribe to him.

Faith is a state of mind, which you may develop, at will, after you have mastered all theother principles, because it is a state of mind which develops voluntarily, throughapplication and use of these principles. Repetition of affirmation of orders to yoursubconscious mind is the only known method of voluntary development of the emotion offaith.

How To Develop Faith

There comes, now, a statement which will give a better understanding of the importancethe principle of auto-suggestion assumes in the transmutation of desire into its physical, ormonetary equivalent; namely: FAITH is a state of mind, which may be induced, or created,by affirmation or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind, through the principle of

auto-suggestion.

Faith and Visualization

Perhaps the meaning may be made clearer through the following explanation as tothe way men sometimes become criminals.

Stated in the words of a famous criminologist, "When men first come into contact withcrime, they abhor it. If they remain in contact with crime for a time, they becomeaccustomed to it, and endure it. If they remain in contact with it long enough, they finallyembrace it, and become influenced by it."

This is the equivalent of saying that any impulse of thought which is repeatedly passed onto the subconscious mind is, finally, accepted and acted upon by the subconscious mind, which proceeds to translate that impulse into its physical equivalent, by the most practicalprocedure available.

In connection with this, consider again the statement, ALL THOUGHTS WHICH HAVEBEEN EMOTIONALIZED, (given feeling) AND MIXED WITH FAITH, begin immediately totranslate themselves into their physical equivalent or counter part.

The emotions, or the "feeling" portion of thoughts, are the factors that give thoughtsvitality, life, and action.

The emotions of Faith, Love, and Sex, when mixed with any thought impulse, give itgreater action than any of these emotions can do singly. Not only thought impulseswhich have been mixed with FAITH, but also those which have been mixed with any ofthe positive emotions, or any of the negative emotions, may reach, and influence thesubconscious mind.

From this statement, you will understand that the subconscious mind will translate into itsphysical equivalent, a thought impulse of a negative or destructive nature, just as readilyas it will act upon thought impulses of a positive or constructive nature. This accounts forthe strange phenomenon, which so many millions of people experience, referred to as"misfortune," or "bad luck."

There are millions of people who BELIEVE themselves "doomed" to poverty and failure, because of some strange force over which they BELIEVE they have no control. They arethe creators of their own "misfortunes," because of this negative BELIEF, which is pickedup by the subconscious mind, and translated into its physical equivalent.

Page 14: Click this link for Your Right to be Rich …files.meetup.com/217255/Think-and-Grow-Rich-Discovery... · 2015-09-20 · Click this link for Your Right to be Rich Greetings! Welcome

Faith and VisualizationThis is an appropriate place at which to suggest again that you may benefit, by passing onto your subconscious mind, any DESIRE, which you wish translated into its physical, ormonetary equivalent, in a state of expectancy or BELIEF that the transmutation will actuallytake place. Your BELIEF, or FAITH, is the element, which determines the action of yoursubconscious mind. There is nothing to hinder you from "deceiving" your subconsciousmind when giving it instructions through autosuggestion, as I deceived my son'ssubconscious mind.

To make this "deceit" more realistic, conduct yourself just as you would, if you wereALREADY IN POSSESSION OF THE MATERIAL THING WHICH YOU ARE DEMANDING,when you call upon your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind will transmute into itsphysical equivalent, by the most direct and practical media available, any order which isgiven to it in a state of BELIEF, or FAITH that the order will be carried out.

Surely, enough has been stated to give a starting point from which one may, throughexperiment and practice, acquire the ability to mix FAITH with any order given to thesubconscious mind.

Perfection will come through practice. It cannot come by merely reading instructions. If itwere true that one may become a criminal by association with crime, (and this is a knownfact), it is equally true that one may develop faith by voluntarily suggesting to thesubconscious mind that one has faith.

The mind comes, finally, to take on the nature of the influences that dominate it. Understandthis truth, and you will know why it is essential for you to encourage the positive emotionsas dominating forces of your mind, and discourage and eliminate negative emotions.

A mind dominated by positive emotions, becomes a favorable abode for the state of mindknown as faith. A mind so dominated may, at will, give the subconscious mind instructions, which it will accept and act upon immediately

FAITH IS A STATE OF MIND WHICH MAY BE INDUCED BY AUTO-SUGGESTION

All down the ages, the religionists have admonished struggling humanity to "have faith" inthis, that, and the other dogma or creed, but they have failed to tell people HOW to havefaith. They have not stated that "faith is a state of mind, and that it may be induced by self-suggestion."

Faith and Visualization

In language which any normal human being can understand, we will describe all that isknown about the principle through which FAITH maybe developed, where it does notalready exist. Have Faith in yourself; Faith in the Infinite.

Before we begin, you should be reminded again that: FAITH is the "eternal elixir"which gives life, power, and action to the impulse of thought!

EVERY ONE OF THE FOREGOING STATEMENTS IS CAPABLE OF PROOF!

The proof is simple and easily demonstrated. It is wrapped up in the principle of auto-suggestion. Let us center our attention, therefore, upon the subject of self-suggestion,and find out what it is, and what it is capable of achieving.

It is a well-known fact that one comes, finally, to BELIEVE whatever one repeats to one'sself, whether the statement be true or false. If a man repeats a lie over and over, he willeventually accept the lie as truth. Moreover, he will BELIEVE it to be the truth. Everyman is what he is, because of the DOMINATING THOUGHTS, which he permits tooccupy his mind.

The foregoing sentence is worth reading a secondtime, and a third, and a fourth. It is worth readingaloud!

FAITH is the starting point of all accumulationof riches! FAITH is the basis of all "miracles,"and all mysteries that cannot be analyzed bythe rules of science!

FAITH is the only known antidote for FAILURE!FAITH is the element, the "chemical" which, whenmixed with prayer, gives one direct communicationwith Infinite Intelligence. FAITH is the elementwhich transforms the ordinary vibration of thought, created by the finite mind of man, into the spiritualequivalent. FAITH is the only agency throughwhich the cosmic force of Infinite Intelligence canbe harnessed and used by man.

Faith and Visualization

Comes, now, a very significant statement of truth:

THOUGHTS WHICH ARE MIXED WITH ANY OF THE FEELINGS OF EMOTIONS,CONSTITUTE A "MAGNETIC" FORCE WHICH ATTRACTS, FROM THEVIBRATIONS OF THE ETHER, OTHER SIMILAR, OR RELATED THOUGHTS.

A thought thus "magnetized" with emotion may becompared to a seed which, when planted in fertile soil, germinates, grows, and multiplies itself over and overagain, until that which was originally one small seed, becomes countless millions of seeds of the SAMEBRAND! The ether is a great cosmic mass of eternalforces of vibration. It is made up of both destructivevibrations and constructive vibrations. It carries, at alltimes, vibrations of fear, poverty, disease, failure, misery; and vibrations of prosperity, health, success, and happiness, just as surely as it carries the sound ofhundreds of orchestrations of music, and hundreds ofhuman voices, all of which maintain their ownindividuality, and means of identification, through themedium of radio.

From the great storehouse of the ether, the human mind isconstantly attracting vibrations that harmonize with that whichDOMINATES the human mind. Any thought, idea, plan, orpurpose which one holds in one's mind attracts, from thevibrations of the ether, a host of its relatives, adds these"relatives" to its own force, and grows until it becomes thedominating, MOTIVATING MASTER of the individual in whosemind it has been housed.

The Starting Point

Now, let us go back to the starting point, and become informed as to how the originalseed of an idea, plan, or purpose may be planted in the mind. The information iseasily conveyed: any idea, plan, or purpose may be placed in the mind throughrepetition of thought. This is why you are asked to write out a statement of yourmajor purpose, or Definite Chief Aim, commit it to memory, and repeat it, in audiblewords, day after day, until these vibrations of sound have reached yoursubconscious mind.

We are what we are, because of thevibrations of thought that we pick up andregister, through the stimuli of our dailyenvironment.

Resolve to throw off the influences of anyunfortunate environment, and to buildyour own life to ORDER.

Taking inventory of mental assets andliabilities, you will discover that yourgreatest weakness is lack of self-confidence. This handicap can besurmounted, and timidity translated intocourage, through the aid of the principleof autosuggestion. The application of thisprinciple may be made through a simplearrangement of positive thought impulsesstated in writing, memorized, andrepeated, until they become a part of theworking equipment of the subconsciousfaculty of your mind.

"FIFTY-SEVEN" FAMOUS ALIBIS

People who do not succeed have one distinguishing trait in common. They know allthe reasons for failure, and have what they believe to be airtight alibis to explainaway their own lack of achievement. Some of these alibis are clever, and a few ofthem are justifiable by the facts. But alibis cannot be used for money. The worldwants to know only one thing HAVE YOU ACHIEVED SUCCESS?

A character analyst compiled a list of the mostcommonly used alibis. As you read the list, examineyourself carefully, and determine how many of thesealibis, if any, are your own property. Remember, too,the philosophy presented in this book makes everyone of these alibis obsolete.

IF I didn't have a wife and family . . . IF I had enough "pull" . . . IF I had money . . . IFI had a good education . . . IF I could get a job . . . IF I had good health . . . IF I onlyhad time . . . IF times were better . . . IF other people understood me . . . IFconditions around me were only different IF I could live my life over again . . . IF I didnot fear what "THEY" would say . . . IF I had been given a chance . . . IF I now had achance . . . IF other people didn't "have it in for me" . . . IF nothing happens to stopme . . . IF I were only younger . . . IF I could only do what I want . . . IF I had beenborn rich . . . IF I could meet "the right people" . . . IF I had the talent that somepeople have . . . IF I dared assert myself . . . IF I only had embraced pastopportunities . . IF people didn't get on my nerves . . . IF I didn't have to keep houseand look after the children IF I could save some money . . . "FIFTY-SEVEN" FAMOUS ALIBISAnd this is the greatest of them all . . . If had the courage to see myselfas I really am, I would find out what is wrong with me, and correct it, thenI might have a chance to profit by my mistakes and learn something fromthe experience of others, for I know that there is something WRONG withme, or I would now be where I WOULD HAVE BEEN IF I had spent moretime analyzing my weaknesses, and less time building alibis to coverthem.

Building alibis with which to explain away failure is a national pastime. The habit is as oldas the human race, and is fatal to success! Why do people cling to their pet alibis? Theanswer is obvious. They defend their alibis because THEY CREATE them! A man's alibi isthe child of his own imagination. It is human nature to defend one's own brainchild.

Building alibis is a deeply rooted habit. Habits are difficult to break, especially when theyprovide justification for something we do.Plato had this truth in mind when he said, "The first and best victory is to conquer self. Tobe conquered by self is, of all things, the most shameful and vile." Another philosopherhad the same thought in mind when he said, "It was a great surprise to me when Idiscovered that most of the ugliness I saw in others, was but a reflection of my own nature"It has always been a mystery to me," said Elbert Hubbard," why people spend so much

time deliberately fooling themselves by creating alibis to cover their weaknesses. If useddifferently, this same time would be sufficient to cure the weak ness, then no alibis wouldbe needed."In parting, I would remind you that "Life is a checkerboard, and the player opposite you is

TIME. If you hesitate before moving, or neglect to move promptly, your men will be wipedoff the board by TIME. You are playing against a partner who will not tolerateINDECISION!"

Previously you may have had a logical excuse for not having forced Life to come throughwith whatever you asked, but that alibi is now obsolete, because you are in possession ofthe Master Key that unlocks the door to Life's bountiful riches. The Master Key is intangible, but it is powerful! It is the privilege of creating, in your ownmind, a BURNING DESIRE for a definite form of riches. There is no penalty for the use ofthe Key, but there is a price you must pay if you do not use it.The price is FAILURE.

There is a reward of stupendous proportions if you put the Key to use. It is the satisfactionthat comes to all who conquer self and force Life to pay whatever is asked. The reward

is worthy of your effort. Will you make the start and be convinced?
