May Flowers
For those among us without the curse of springtime allergies, May is just about
the best month to be outside. The blooming cascade of plant life in the Mid-South
is truly a thing of beauty. And with Mothers Day fast approaching, it might be
pertinent to make a quick pit stop and grab an impromptu bouquet of ditch lilies.
And speaking of special women in our lives...
This month, Click celebrates six uniquely Southern women in business from
all walks of life with a very special issue dedicated to spotlighting the best and
brightest in the region. From CEOs and dealmakers to our gold medalist cover
model, Rochelle Stevens, each one is a star in their own right. To see the full list,
check out page 69.
In addition, this month marks the return of our home living section with a
charming Southern chateau located right off the banks of the Mississippi River
(page 83). Special thanks to Jeff Edison for inviting us into his lovely home I
definitely picked up a few design tips from that one.
If youre seeking a cool refreshment, look no further than the perfectly muddled
mixture on page 24, the Black-beery Whiskey Smash. And if that doesnt quite
sate your sweet tooth, take a look at Michelle Hopes entertaining column this
month shes mapped out a one-of-a-kind Sugar Shack Shindig perfect for the
young and young at heart (page 89). For the musically inclined, weve got a bit of
old school and a bit of new school this month with soulful Southaven native Kirby
Lauryen (page 22) and seasoned symphony director Mei Ann Chen (page 20).
So from all of us to all of you: Keep reading. And always remember, in the
immortal words of Lawrence Mr. T Tureaud: Treat your mother right.
Happy reading,
Casey Hilder

Click Magazine: Tell us a little bit about how you came to be
in your position. What was it like growing up and plotting a
career path? Is this what you always wanted to do?
Tina Birchett: Watching my Mom start a marketing agency,
magazine and womens expo showed me I could do anything
if I put my mind to it. I have always wanted to be in a position
to be creative while helping people, Sisterhood allows me to
do that and more.
In college, I once went to one of my professors office to
fret over the fact that I was unsure of exactly what I wanted
to do. I couldnt find a major that encompassed everything
I wanted to do. I wanted to learn more about international
business, I did well in the journalism courses I took, I enjoyed
my psychology classes; I wanted to do everything and I was
all over the place. My professor, Dr. Wilson, told me that in
order to be a good CEO, you have to know how to do a little
bit of everything so try it all and then try more things. He was
right and that is exactly what I did. I have never been afraid
to step out of my comfort zone and I am a constant learner.
CM: What have been the highlights and challenges since
taking the reins of the Sisterhood Showcase?
TB: With this platform I have the opportunity to impact so
many people, which is an honor and blessing. I am extremely
blessed to be able to work on something I am passionate
about professionally. Ive learned new skills along the way
and have had an opportunity to collaborate with a number of
incredibly talented people.
We just completed a brand overhaul. We spent months
researching, conducting focus groups and vetting
recommendations. Change is never easy, but necessary to
ensure longevity. I am very pleased with the outcome and so
far our audience is, too.
CM: How do you maintain a healthy balance between work
and life?
TB: Working out and eating healthy are very important to
me. I try to run at least 4 times a week. I dont watch much
television, but I do make time for Billions (Lara Axelrod is my
Shero). I also love spending time with my family and friends.
They keep me encouraged and grounded.
CM: What was the most important thing you learned from
your mother, Sisterhood Showcase Founder, Tina Birchett?
TB: Dont be afraid to fight for what you believe in.
CM: What do you want to accomplish personally and
professionally in the next year?

SINCE THE LOSS OF HER MOTHER, Sisterhood Showcase Founder Tina
Birchett, in 2013, Christina Stevison has taken the reins of the annual event
and worked to venture out on her own, leading with a goal of creating event experi-ences that connect, engage, empower and entertain women. This month, she shares her experiences as a modern businesswomen and
offers a preview to this years upcoming show-
case festivities.
Click magazine | MAY 2016 15
TB: Professionally, I want to continue to
enhance my skillset. Personally, I want
to travel more. I find inspiration when
I travel.
CM: What do you think is the biggest
issue for women in the workplace in
2016?
TB: The gender pay gap, double
standards, lack of opportunities and the
list goes on.
CM: What advice can you offer women
who are seeking to start their own
business?
TB: Realize that success never occurs
exactly how or when you want it to.
Seek people that have accomplished
what you are trying to do. Study them,
learn from their mistakes if you can.
Dont be too hard on yourself. When
you are chasing your dreams, you are
bound to have a few setbacks here and
there. Dont be discouraged, its part of
the process.
CM: What can attendees expect from
this year's Sisterhood Showcase?
TB: To be empowered and entertained.
My team and I have put so much into
planning this years event, its going to
be one for the books.
CM: Planning the Sisterhood Showcase
is a year-round affair for you. What is
an average day like?
I can honestly say no two days are the
same. I could be planning a commercial
shoot one day and then answering
emails from sun up to sun down the
next. I have grown quite used to hearing
the words maam, we have never done
that before and equally used to saying
okay, lets figure it out!
If you had to choose a second career,
what would it be?
I would be a psychologist; I am
fascinated by people. I am intrigued by
what causes them to do things they do
and what makes them tick.

CELEBRATED AS ONE OF AMERICAS GREAT modern authors, Ron Rash is truly a contemporary master of both the Southern gothic tradition and the juxtaposition of poetry with prose. In his recent novel
Above the Waterfall, Mr. Rash seamlessly meshes elaborate
poetic verse with captivating prose, each lending themselves
perfectly to the feeling of his familiar Appalachian backdrop.
He is able to achieve an almost spiritual connection to the
land for his characters while also exploring the darkness and
violence that permeate the tale.
Though sunlight tinges the mountains, black leather-
winged bodies swing low. First fireflies blink languidly. Beyond
this meadow, cicadas rev and slow like sewing machines, he
writes. The combination of softness and beauty with darkness
and strangeness are enticing and echo sweetly the Southern
literature of decades long past. The sensory descriptions
offered by Mr. Rash allow his readers to be in the environment
with his characters. And for anyone who knows the sound
of cicadas, this detail brings the mountain world quickly to
life. Mr. Rash always manages to find a way to make even the
most familiar detail new and vibrant for his audience.
Above the Waterfall unfolds the broken tale of Becky and Les
who are somewhat unlikely lovers, each with their own dark
past to unveil. Becky is a park ranger and Les is a soon-to-
be retired sheriff, but the two find commonality in a number
of ways, not the least of which is the scenic beauty that
surrounds them. But, these two central characters are not
the only ones taking in the rustic outdoor scenery. This small
mountain town is home to a resort, and when trouble erupts
between resort guests and a certain local, things really start
to get interesting. The sheriff has some even deeper, darker
corners to explore before he can retire, too. Corruption in the
mountains and the test of his relationship with Becky take
Les to new levels of self-examination and hyper-awareness

of his mountain home. Themes of past
mistakes, tragedy, corruption, and
betrayal are all woven masterfully into
the tale.
After a beautiful opening that is
written with an artists grace, the first
chapter begins in the voice of Les.
Where does any story really begin? One
thing cant happen unless other things
happened earlier. I could say this story
began with an art class I took in ninth
grade, or broken promises, one by Becky
Shytle and one by me, or that it began
when a shirtsleeve got caught by a hay
balers tines, Rash writes. This is an
important thought to begin on because
the book is an exploration of both past
and present. The chapters alternate
between point of view, allowing readers
to see the world through Less eyes as
well as Beckys. There are moments
of joy and moments of sadness both
fueling the fire of the novels plot while
also providing reflection on the past.
For readers who have spent any
amount of time in the grandeur of the
Appalachians, Rashs lush descriptions
will bring memories flooding back.
While the poetic style of many of the
descriptions gives the setting depth
and dimension, Mr. Rash also employs
enough restraint to strike an ideal
balance. It is nearly impossible to read
Above the Waterfall without comparing
it mentally to the timeless works of
William Faulkner. The flowing abstract
style coupled with the authentic quality
of the plot and characters make the
comparison easy to see for readers of
Southern literature.
Mr. Rash has also been compared to
Carson McCullers in his writing style
and thematic choices. His work is
honest, beautiful, at times tragic, but
always genuine and purposeful. He is
also the author of Serena, which was
made into a movie, as well as four other
prize-winning novels including One Foot
in Eden and Saints at the River. Mr. Rash is
also widely respected for his masterful
poetry and short stories.

Symphony and SoulMemphis Symphony Orchestras Mei Ann Chen delivers her final bow as Music Director
Story by SAMUEL PRAGER
CONDUCTOR MEI-ANN CHEN has traveled the world conduct-ing orchestras, but for the past six years, the Taiwan native has served
as the Music Director for the Memphis
Symphony Orchestra. Now that her
tenure is over, the award-winning con-
ductor leaves the Bluff City to travel the
world guest conducting at some of the
most prestigious concert halls in Europe
and Asia.
The past six years have been very
dynamic for the symphony. The group
has experienced unique partnerships,
collaborations, financial difficulties, and
closed the curtain on the final Sunset
Symphony performance in 2015.
However, Chen reminisces on the
unique partnerships the Symphony has
made, such as Ballet Memphis, and the
unusual collaborations with local musi-
cians, like rapper Al Kapone. Chen notes
that the diversity of Memphis musical
culture and the bond it forms between
musicians here is unique from many
other cities and regions.
What other orchestra collaborates
with local music from across such a
wide array of genres? Were in Memphis;
were a symphony orchestra, what is
stopping us from collaborating with
rappers and other true Memphis original
musicians, says Chen. The diversity
and community within the city is the
soul of the music. Music is part of us
and were part of Memphis. Im proud
that I could bring some of that into the
symphony.
The music of Memphis isnt the only
thing the 42-year-old conductor noticed
when moving here in 2010., Chen says
the people here have left a lasting
impression on her.
The city has some of the most genuine
and generous people. This city is beau-
tiful, it has soul, which is something I
cant emphasize enough. We need to be
the advocate for our city and celebrate
these friendships its builtd upon, says
Chen. I dont think I will ever find or
meet the same kind of friends that I
met here.
After leaving Memphis, Chen will be-
come the Artistic Director of the National
Taiwan Symphony Orchestra for their
summer festival.
The community and culture of Memphis
and the South is something Chen plans
on taking with her as she enters the
next chapter of her life. The Memphis
Symphony Orchestra honored Chen
with the title of Conductor Laureate, an
honorary title for outstanding creative
achievement, which Chen hints is not the
end of her relationship with Memphis and
the Symphony.
I came here as an outsider, and Im
leaving as a Memphian. Im forever
grateful to this city for letting me be a
part of the journey and giving me my
first professional music director posi-
tion. I will also forever be a Memphian
with a mission to carry the gospel that
is Memphis. Ive taken many incredible
memories from Memphis. Meeting
these incredible people who try to
make a difference in their city. I have
never seen anything like it, says Chen.
This is really a place that I dont want
to leave, but hopefully Ill return to the
symphony one day and continue con-
necting music with the community. Its
not a goodbye, more of a See ya later.
For her final performances as music
director of MSO, Chen will be conducting
Mahlers First at the Cannon Center on
May 14 and at Germantown Performing
Arts Center on May 15.
The diversity and community within the city is the soul of the
music.

WHILE KIRBY LAURYEN began her cross-country journey as a singer/songwriter in Southaven, her North
Mississippi roots and smooth voice
have catapulted her straight to the top
through acts like co-writing alongside
artists like Rihanna and Kanye West to
guest starring in the smoky jazz bars of
ABC/Marvels 1940s period piece, Agent
Carter.
Back in 2012, Lauryen, an alumna
of Berklee College of Music, took to
YouTube to write, record, and upload
a new song every day accompanied
by her playing the piano. By the 302nd
day, representatives from Jay Zs
entertainment company RocNation
took notice and signed the soulful
singer to a publishing deal. She has
since written songs for several top-100
singers like Beyonce, Rihanna, Kanye
West, Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande.
Now based in Los Angeles, the
Memphis-born, Southaven-bred singer
has released the single "Loved by
You", which has already garnered over
100,000 listens on the music streaming
website Soundcloud since its February
release.
Lauryen cites her upbringing in her
home state, from attending church to
listening to country music with friends
from high school, as inspiration for her
music. Theres something about the
simplicity of Mississippi that translates
into my music, she says.
Besides signing a deal towards the end
of her 300-plus song series, Lauryen
says she learned about consistency and
having the courage to try to achieve the
things that she actually wanted versus
the things she just thought that she
could achieve. Her favorite songs to sing
during the Song a Day series came
from a series of songs where fans would
send in their stories. Lauryen would
then pick the ones that she connected
with and write songs based on those
stories.
Lauryen began the Song a Day series
because of a hunger to manifest her
potential and a hunger to do what she
had always imagined herself doing, as
well as loss. I also experienced the loss
of someone who was really close to me
the year before, and that showed me
that time is not promised, she says.
Lauryen left the MidSouth for Boston
to study songwriting and the music
industry at Berklee College of Music
on an achievement-based scholarship.
She left Berklee as a self-declared
graduate in 2009, to move to Atlanta.
For a year, she pursued bright lights
and a record deal, only to find light
bills, and not-so-friendly notes from
college buddy Sallie Mae.
With no record deal but lots of lessons
learned, Lauryen returned to Memphis.
Upon her return, she won Budweisers

Battle for the Crown contest; received
designation from the historic WDIA
radio station as Memphis Next Great
Soul Singer; and served as opening
act for Anthony Hamilton, Raheem
Devaughn, and KEM.
Lauryen moved to Los Angeles to be
closer to her publisher and the music
scene. She admits that she always
thought New York would be home, so
L.A. was unexpected. LA is a city where
everyone has a talent, so you really
have to be secure in your gift and your
ability, she adds. If not, the amount
of talent in the city alone can eat away
your confidence.
Along with adjusting to new cities,
there is also a shift in writing for
oneself versus writing with and
alongside others. The song that
Lauryen has co-written that is she is
most proud of is Kanye Wests Only
One, which features former Beatles
member Paul McCartney. The song
references Wests wife and daughter.
The moment had special significance
to her, both as a writer and a longtime
West fan. Lauryen compares writing a
song someone else will sing to a form
of servitude, one where she acts as
vessel to say things the singer could
not but wanted to. Writing for herself,
she reasons, is more self-involved, akin
to being her own therapist.
Besides musical accessibility, the
move to the West Coast has other perks.
In January of this year, she starred in
an episode of ABCs Agent Carter which
featured Lauryen in the role she was
born to play a singer.
The role took her back to her days to
participating in Desoto Family Theatre
in middle and high school. She says
that she would love to go on Broadway
and do more acting in the future.
Now that Loved by You has been
released, Lauryen plans on releasing
more songs and hopes to tour this
year. I really believe music is a service,
and its my job to serve the people,
to give them songs to exercise to, do
their makeup to, fall in love to, drive to
work to, live to, Lauryen says. My job
is to create music that makes your life
easier, and love more tangible.

Navigating Change, the theme for this years Sisterhood Showcase, is exactly what the Sisterhood
Showcase must do as we embark upon our third decade. Launching the Sisterhood Showcase and building a strong, loyal constituency 20 years ago was not easy. It was fraught with skepticism and
suspicion, challenge and controversy. But our work over the past two decades has driven us to transform
a local entertaining and educational summit into a national platform to address issues important to
women of color. The goal of the Sisterhood Showcase is to enlighten and empower women of color by providing them with tools and access to a wide range of resources to address obstacles that
confront us on a daily basis. Weve seen the good and the bad; the ups and the downs. But after 20 years,
we are still standing strong and ready to embrace the
