UP FRONTARTS, CULTURE AND PERSONALITIES
No-Hit Wonder
Singer/Songwriter and native Mississippian Cory Branan
returns to his roots
Interview by CASEY HILDER
14 APRIL 2016 | Click magazine
CORY BRANANS GOT AN EVIL STREAK / AND A way with words thatll bring you to your knees / Oh he can play the wildest shows and he can sing so sweet. Ben Nichols ringing endorsement from Luceros 2003
single Tears Dont Matter Much says all you need to know about 41-year-old Southaven native Cory Bran-an. From his 2002 debut, The Hell You Say, to his joint efforts alongside big names like Jason Isbell and the Thrift Store Cowboys, this Southern storyteller fuses wailing chords of punk rock with soulful old-country structure. This month, Branan returns to his North Mississippi roots to perform at Oxfords Double Decker Arts Festival.
Click Magazine: What was life like growing up in Southaven?
Cory Branan: My old man was from Arkabutla, he worked
on the jets at FedEx. It was just like any old small town
when I was growing up. I remember how we used to fly
model airplanes where all the fast food and hospitals have
popped up now. Stateline Road was pretty much all there
was at the time.
CM: How did you get started playing music?
CB: I grew up alongside it in church my whole life and my
family played a lot. My father was a drummer, grandfather a
fiddle player there were lots of instruments around. I didnt
start on guitar till I was around 12 or 13 years old. At the time,
I just played for whoever needed a guitar player for fun. I
didnt really start writing music and playing in coffee shops
till I was in my twenties.
CM: Your songwriting skills earned shout-outs from
local legends like Lucero, Steve Selvidge and Jason
Isbell. What is your songwriting process like?
up front people
Click magazine | APRIL 2016 15
CB: Well, now that I have kids, any sort
of structure has gone out the window. I
tend to just go at it, you know? I dont
really like to write a lot when Im on
the road, so a lot of times Ill be pretty
amped to go when I get back. Ive never
been much of a pressure writer. Im not
quite like Ben [Nichols] from Lucero.
That guy will just lock himself in a room
for days before the record and write a
bunch. I dont write well under pressure
or maybe I do, but Ive never pushed
myself to.
CM: Is there anyone youd like to
collaborate with from the Mid-South but
havent had a chance to yet?
CB: Ive actually talked to Paul Taylor
about working on this newest record.
The guys a genius, and I dont know too
many geniuses. Ill be recording in April
at Tweed just outside of Oxford with
Andrew Ratcliffe.
CM: Have you ever attended Oxfords
Double Decker Arts fest? What can we
expect from your performance?
CB: I played it several years ago, the
same year as Wilco. Who knows what
to expect, I never make a plan, just wing
it. It will be solo. Ive been playing a lot
of electric lately and I havent decided if
well go electric, acoustic, or both.
CM: Your music has drawn comparisons
from old-school indie punk to Ryan
Adams ballads. How would you per-
sonally describe your style?
CB: I dont. I honestly dont describe it.
I like to give myself the freedom to do
whatever I want at any given moment.
Ive pulled from a lot of American roots
forms in the past and I love the blues,
country and a lot of traditional folk
writers like John Pine. Im also a huge
fan of Tom Waits, and what kind of
music does Tom Waits play? Whatever
he wants.
Cory Branan will appear at this years
Double Decker Arts Festival in Oxford on
April 22 and at the Lucero Block Party in
Memphis on April 23.

The storied Southern humorist brings his dry wit to the Hernando Public Library on April 21 to meet with the locals and speak on a variety of topics.
Q: Your work is often focused on the importance of words and diction. Do you have a favorite word?
A: I would say click, except its so trendy. So, no, I dont have a favor-ite word. Ill tell you my least favorite
word: the word favorite. Anyone who
claims to have a favorite food, or animal,
or song, or thing to write about, is just
taking an excuse to babble.
Q: In 2002, you narrated a PBS docu-mentary about the Mississippi River. Can you share a little about the pro-
cess? Did you learn anything surprising?
A: I tried to learn something while dealing with the fact that I was being dragged hither and yon by a film
crew. I did learn, by asking all sorts of
people what being mainstream meant
to them, that most of them never had
thought about it before and werent go-
ing to think about it.
Q: Some of the events you docu-mented, such as the King Biscuit Blues Festival, barbecue contests and
barehanded catfishing, are old hat to peo-
ple in the region but may seem strange
to outsiders. How do you approach these
uniquely Southern topics?
A: I approach all topics from my own level of curiosity. To me every-thing, especially a commonplace thing, is
strange and yet, I trust, comprehensible.
Q: What is your writing process like?A: I mopearound, comeupstairs to stand at my big-screen-monitor computer, curse, wander around, sigh,
talk to the cat, write, rewrite, and its
never quite right, but it gets done.
Q: Any advice for aspiring writers?A: Read a lot and write a lot, care deep down about choosing the right words, andgive people a chance to
talk to you about what they do.

THERES A JUXTAPOSITION of half-hallelujah vocals and meet-me-at- the-crossroad guitar licks when International Blues
Challenge semifinalists Southern
Avenue takes the stage. But that mixture
sounds just right for blues aficionados.
It took me a long time, 10,000 miles
and tough times to find these amazing
people, says Ori Naftaly, 28-year-old,
Israeli-born guitar player who founded
Southern Avenue and plays lead guitar
for the band. Southern Avenue is a
manifest of my biggest dream, to be
in a band that is like a family where
everyone takes care of each other.
Naftalys journey performing the blues
started in 2011, when he put together
The Ori Naftaly Band, a group that
quickly became known as one of the
best blues acts in Israel. But his love of
guitar began earlier, at the age of five. I
had plenty of guitar teachers, he says,
but I was so hyper active, keeping me
focused was a big problem. So I spent
most of my time jamming to records.
Everything from Son House to Led
Zeppelin, and from John McLaughlin to
Stevie Wonder and Prince.
Combining eclectic influence with his
fathers tastes in big jazz, fusion, blues
and 60s music, staples of Naftalys
soundtrack from his youth were Al
Green, Ray Charles, Muddy Waters
and James Brown. Recognizing their
sons abilities on the guitar, his family
ensured his instruction in a wide
range of genres including Spanish,
classical, jazz and funk leading to
his acceptance at Rimon School of
Jazz & Contemporary Music to study
Arrangement and Composition.
Despite studying classical guitar with
famed Israeli musician Shlomo Yidov,
it would be a different teacher Tony
Pirson who most inspired Naftalys
future path as a musician. From the age
of 11 to 21, I had the privilege to have a
brilliant guitar teacher who toured with
Tina Turner and James Brown for three
years. Tony Pirson was a huge influence
on my style and the fact he relocated to
Israel was my big lucky break in life.
It was this kind of early exposure and
lucky breaks that would prepare him to
later share the stage with such acts as
Tab Benoit, Ana Popovic, Bernard Allison,
Shemekia Copeland, Royal Southern
Brotherhood, Ron Holloway (The
Allman Brothers), Marcia Ball, Danielle
Nicole and others. His namesake band
was named the Best Blues Band in his
home country, and in 2013, they flew to
historic Beale Street to compete in the
International Blues Challenge. They not
only reached the semifinals that year
they also sold the largest number of
CDs ever sold during an IBC event.
Blues is the foundation, says Naftaly.
Blues was the biggest genre in the
world in the early 60s in my opinion,
and you can't just ignore it when all
these great bands and musicians talk
about their roots... and not go after it.
Thats why I moved to Memphis, to
pursue a dream. I left my family and
my friends. I sold my car. I moved to the
other side of the world. I arrived in the
United States with $700 and a few dates
lined up.
Following that move, Southern Avenue
was born, with the addition of local
vocalist Tierinii Jackson and Tikyra
Jackson on drums, sisters and preachers
daughters raised performing in church
in Memphis, Tennessee. The band to
me is a safe haven, says Tierinii, the

powerhouse Southern Avenue vocalist
who has starred in several musical
theatre productions including Dream
Girls, Spring Awakening, and Disneys
High School Musical 2. Were a team
who look out for each other. We're
a family. We are all different but
passionate. And that spills over into our
music and creates a warm balance. I
love it.
Tikyra "TK" Jackson is Tieriniis sister
and cites gospel music as her primary
musical influence. At 21 years old,
shes been playing drums since she
was 9, and grew up playing with the
church band. A music business major
at the University of Memphis, Jackson
continues to hone her craft on the
drums with the university's marching
band, The Mighty Sound of the South,
and in the Memphis Tigers basketball
pep band.
Add to that mix Jeremy Powell on keys
and local bassist, Daniel Mckee. [Mckee]
is one of the best and hard-working
bass players in Memphis today, says
Naftaly. He and I toured over 40 states
with my former band and having him
with us makes us all play better. The
diversity and different influences we all
have and also share, makes us a unique,
fun group of people.
With a self-titled EP and their first
full-length LP set to be released in the
summer of 2016, Southern Avenue
plays multiple shows around Memphis.
Their full-length LP will be recorded
and produced by Kevin Houston with
Luther Dickinson at the Zebra Ranch in
Independence, Mississippi.
In the meantime, 28-year-old Naftaly
is glad he made the leap of faith.
Living in Memphis is awesome, he
says. So many bars have live music
on a regular basis, growing a midtown
community great food, warm people.
What's not to like? Life is short and
Id rather say my goodbyes happy and
with no regrets. We only live once
and I want to live fullyto create and
perform music.

TIRED OF LOOKING TIRED? As we age, there are many things going on that make us look droopy and tired. Our collagen production starts slowing down around the age of 16, we lose volume, we have volume shifting south with gravity, we lose bone mass and our skin loses elasticity and starts to sag and wrinkle. There is no single way to address all of these issues. Turning back time and still looking natural takes several modalities.
1: tighten and resurface the skin 2: replace lost volume and lift to restore balance 3: reduce extreme muscle bulk to smooth 4: great professional skin careValerie Monismith, RN [email protected]

FAMILY, THE OLD MAN SAID TO NO ONE. The word hung in a puff of frozen breath before dissipating into the early-morning fog. Riley Burroughs used that word the same way a master carpenter
used a hammer. So begins the opening chapter of Bull
Mountain, the debut novel of Brian Panowich which is getting
the attention of readers and writers alike. With rave reviews
from respected Southern literature authors including Wiley
Cash and Tom Franklin, Bull Mountain is gritty, intense, and
nearly impossible to put down.
At the onset of the novel, readers first encounter the
Burroughs clan and a wild ride of darkness and violence
unfolds from there. The story is told from multiple points of
view, as the tale of a family steeped in generations of crime
and vengeance in the Georgia backwoods is masterfully woven
by Panowich. While the familys legacy is permeated with the
illegal substance trade (from moonshine to marijuana and
more), the sheriff of the town, Clayton Burroughs, is one of
their own, making his position ever-complicated and calling
his loyalty constantly into question. Though Claytons life is
ruled by lawfulness and duty in terms of his job, his convoluted
past and family ties give him little peace. The question of his
allegiance is never far from his thoughts.
To make matters more complicated, an ATF agent by the
name of Agent Holly arrives on the scene early in the novel.
While Clayton has been approached by other agents in the
past where his crime-riddled family is concerned, this agent
seems different and his proposition leaves plenty of wiggle
room for Claytons family. This is a relief to the sheriff, who
has refused to be a part of any operation that would land his
brothers in prison. Holly promises that Claytons family will
remain free and untouched as long as they cooperate with
this plan to bring down an even higher-up ring of criminals
who they have been involved with for years. This plan will
force Clayton to examine his bonds to his family, his loyalty
to his job in law enforcement, and the history he shares with
his brothers.
In addition to the multiple perspectives, the novel moves
forward and backwards in time so that readers can understand
where the Burroughs family started and how this complicated
set of circumstances has come to be. Panowichs characters are
indescribably real and each is full of the sort of depth that can
only be created by the most gifted of authors. While the crime
and violence at the root of the story may seem hard to grasp
for many readers at first, the complexities and nuanced detail
given to the men in the story helps make them, on some level,
relatable and understandable by the end of the tale.
For readers and lovers of Southern literature, Panowich will
be one of the most exciting new discoveries in a long time.
His voice is powerful and courageous. His novel creates a
picture as realistic and brilliant as it is chilling. And while
on the surface, this book focuses on a disturbing aspect of
these characters, it manages to uncover so much about the
multifaceted nature of family juxtaposed against the lush
backdrop of Appalachia.
The novel calls into memory the timeless work of Cormac
McCarthy, as well as that of Larry Brown and William Gay.
Stylistically, the book packs an undeniable punch and will be
loved by fans of Tom Franklins Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter. The
focus on the theme of family allows just about any reader to
connect with this novel, but it is the authors careful attention
to even the tiniest detail that makes it so captivating and
impossible to walk away from unchanged. It has been said that
writing is the painting of the voice, and this novel is a shining
example of how such a talent truly does exist. This book will
undoubtedly reinvigorate the world of Southern literature with
its electrifying and unforgettable story.

ADOG IN AN ANIMAL SHELTER DOESNT HAVE anything. It might have a concrete floor, a fence to look through, a roof overhead; and a bunch of other animals to have to mess with for sleeping space. Thats in a
good situation. In an outdoor shelter, no roof comes with the
furnishings.
Four years ago, Angela Pieroni wanted to do something for
these dogs. Cold, alone, and outside, they had absolutely
nothing. She thought that maybe, with a little effort and
determination, she could provide them something: a
blanket, a bed, a toy to chew on. With that idea, she started
Blankets for Barks.
That first year I had just made some flyers on my computer
and distributed them around the neighborhood, Pieroni
says. It wasnt much but I got a decent response and was
able to donate several items to Germantown Animal Shelter.
Over the next few years, Pieroni has continued to run
the program, from late fall to mid-spring. Each year, she
collectsblankets, bedding, and home-related dog items and
chooses a new shelter or group to donate the items to.
In previous years, she partnered with Meows & Bowwows
and the Tunica Humane Society. But this year, she chose Alive
Rescue Memphis, after a dog in her hometown touched her
heart and the hearts of the online rescue community.
Pieroni met that dog, Delta, on Fioranelli Drive, a road named
after her family, in her hometown of Greenville, MS. A stray
beagle just bouncing down the road might not seem odd in
the country, but Delta caught Pieronis eye.
Probably everybody just figured he was
ok, she says. Thats just what country
people do, you know. But you never know
whats underlying with these dogs.
With Delta, there was a lot underlying.
He had fairly advanced heartworms and
a series of other major health issues. But
Pieroni had made a connection, and was
determined to save him.
When I found [Delta] I was nervous, but
there was no turning back. There was no
turning back on this dog.
Perioni took Delta to the best vets she could
find, and got him the right care, all while
sharing their health journey on social media.
The process got a lot of attention from local
animal lovers and the rescue community,
including Alive Rescue Memphis President,
Ranice Coppens.

We met through everything that was
going on with Delta, Coppens says,
and then it was clear that our missions
are pretty much the same, so we started
working together.
Sadly, the new partnership outlived its
inspiration. Delta succumbed to health
issues after 47 days.
Were still dealing with that, losing
Delta, Pieroni says. But weve been able
to accomplish so much in his memory.
That includes the fourth annual haul
for Blankets for Barks, which is the
largest ever. Most of the blankets this
year will be donated to Alive Rescue
Memphis, to be used in foster care for
dogs, and some will also be donated to
the West Memphis Animal Shelter.
Coppens and Pieroni have also started
a Delta Fund, which raises money to
help strays and shelter animals who
are older and show significant medical
needs, and have already used that fund
to save a dog from West Memphis,
whom Pieroni has named Percy after
prominent Greenville historical figure,
Leroy Percy.
Pieroni, a lifelong animal helper who
started a cat rescue when she was
six years old, has bigger plans for the
program moving forward. This year,
she intends to make Blankets for
Barks themed dog blankets for sale in
pet stores, whose profits will benefit
the charity. But even with this new
tool, she still has no problem tracking
down item donations.
I dont turn anything down. I will
drive to the end of the earth to pick up
a sheet.

Taste of DeSoto
John Woods foodie festivities return to the Landers Center on April 24
Story by CASEY HILDER
up front
Now in its 12th year, the Taste of DeSoto brings together dozens of local restaurants in the DeSoto County area, all while rais-ing money for a good cause. Tickets for this celebration of uniquely Southern foods are $50, and entry for kids under 12 is free. John Woods, Taste of DeSoto founder and own-er of First Choice Catering, says this years annual event should provide a little some-thing for everyone from pizza purveyors to catfish connoisseurs.
Q: Tell us a little about your own culinary background.A: I dont have any formal culinary training in the traditional sense, but I grew up around good cooks and liked to cook. I owned a deli, which
later became a catfish restaurant, before opening a
catering company and Ive learned as Ive gone along.
Q: Where did the idea for this event come from?A: A few years back, I was doing come work in Washington, DC, for the Smithsonian and I learned a lot of things. One of the most interest-
ing things I learned was the unifying interests of
food. As I worked with countries from all over the
world, I saw how food was the one thing that drew
people together. There was an event going on at the
time called The Taste of DC and I met some of the
founders and organizers behind that. Afterwards, I
thought to myself: Wouldnt it be nice if we could
do that in DeSoto County? So I came up with the
idea alongside Tom and Cyndi Pittman and we ran
with it.
Q: Why DeSoto County?A: I was one of the first restaurant owners in DeSoto County with Catfish Corner. It was very successful, but Id always had the thought that the restaurant business in DeSoto County would be thriv-
ing one day. So its really a desire to help out local businesses and local
restaurant owners. Another thing was the amount of upstart charities in
our county without the infrastructure to host these big fundraisers. We
select two charities every year and donate money that they might not
have been able to raise any other way. This years charities are The Arc
Northwest Mississippi and The Hope Center.

National Pet ID WeekApril 17-23, 2016Make sure you properly identify your pets!We encourage pet owners to use one or more of the
following pet identification methods to ensure the
safe return of their pets should they become lost:
Collars and identification (ID) tags
Microchipping
Make sure it has all current info on the tag and includes:
Pet's name, Owner's name and address, Telephone numbers, Any
medical problem requiring medication (may require separate tag)
Veterinarian's name and number, if possible.
Microchipping involves implanting a tiny capsule under the
pet's skin between the shoulder blades. Microchips can be
used on dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, and other companion pets.
The tiny chip is about the size of a grain of rice. The owner
then sends the contact information to a registering agency
in the event the pet becomes lost. When a pet is found,
any agency with an appropriate scanner, can quickly identify
a code that links the animal to its owner. We can microchip!

DeSoto Family Theatre premiered its winter show, Rogers & Hammersteins The King and I at the Landers Center. Set in 1862, the show follows an English widow, Anna, and her
son to Bangkok, where the King has summoned
them. Meant to serve as a tutor to the Kings
many children and wives, Anna soon becomes
much more. The timeworn tale underscores the
importance of personal morality and mutual respect.
