    CLEANUP LEVELS FOR LEAD IN ON-SITE SOILS

    Because me most likely receptors that may come in contact with on-site soil areolder child trespassers and adult workers, cleanup levels for on-site soil werederived using a model developed by the Society for EnvironmentalGeochemistry and Health (SEGH). The SEGH model is described fully in theBaseline Risk Assessment (Clement International Corporation 1992), where itwas used to estimate exposures to these receptors. This model was, in fact,originally developed as a means of calculating guideline concentrations in soils(SEGH 1990). The form of SEGH model used for this calculation is asfollows:

    where:

    Cs - soil cleanup guideline concentration (mg/kg);

    T - blood lead guideline or target concentration (ug Pb/dL);

    G - geometric standard deviation of the blood lead distribution;

    n - number of standard deviations corresponding to "lie degree ofprotection required for the population at risk;

    B - background baseline blood lead concentrations in the populationat risk (ug/dL); and

    S - slope or response of the blood lead-soil lead relationship (ugPb/dL blood per 1,000 ppm of soil lead).

    The values used for the background blood lead level (4 ug/dL), the blood leadguideline (25 ug/dL), and the slope of the blood lead-soil lead relationship (2ug/dL per 1,000 mg/kg) are the same as those used in the e.aluation of on-sitelead exposure for older children and adults presented in Section 4 of theBaseline Risk Assessment (Clement International Corporation 1992). As in thatsection, results were calculated using both geometric standard deviations of

  • 1.42 and 1.7. The number of standard deviations, n, was set equal to 1.64which is the value corresponding to protection of 95 percent of the population.

    Using the above parameter values, on-site cleanup levels for lead of 5,000ing/kg and 3,200 mg/kg were calculated for GSD's of 1.42 and 1.7,respectively.
