CLAYMONT MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

“Success is the result of hard work, learning from failure, and persistence.” - Collin Powell

Flu and cold season….

Now that cold and flu season is upon us, please remember the following things if you need to miss school:

- if you are feeling sick at school, let the office and/or the nurse know - do not call or text someone from your cell phone to let them know you are not feeling well.

- Any student leaving school must be signed out by an adult on their emergency medi-cal form.

- Students signing back into school do not need an adult with

them; they do need a note from home or from the doctor.

- If you miss school it is your responsibility to get work from the

day(s) you were absent.

Happy Holidays everyone! I am excited to announce CMS will host its

first monthly Choose Kind activity in December. Around 100 students

signed up to be a secret friend to another student. During the month

of December, secret friends will put positive notes/messages in and

on the locker of their secret friend all the while trying not to "get

caught." Secret friends will reveal themselves the week before Christ-

mas break. All students in the building received a free "Choose Kind"

shirt thanks to the generosity of a private donor, the principal's fund,

and Jane Rickey from Keeping You in Stitches. Future monthly Choose

Kind activities are in the works. Thank you for allowing me the privi-

lege of working with your kids. As always, my door is open.

- Monticell

From the desk of Mrs. Monticelli:

Happy Holidays! Please continue to establish a routine for studying and homework with your child. Encourage them to try their best and check in with them to ensure they under-stand what they are supposed to do. If they seem to struggle regularly with their homework, please contact their teacher to try to find out why. Understanding the lessons and being able to participate in a meaningful way also helps to ensure they are on their best behavior in the classroom. We always appreciate the continued support you are able to provide to your children. It helps us maximize our collective efforts to ensure their continued progress and growth.

Attendance Reminder: Please be sure to call the building on the day your child is absent from school, or send a note/doctor's excuse the following day. If a student accumulates four unexcused absences they will serve a lunch detention. If your child accumulates 8 unexcused absences, they will be issued a day of ISS or Friday school. If your student accumu-lates 72 hours of unexcused absences, they will be considered habitually truant, and we will need to meet to develop an attendance intervention plan.

From the Desk of Mrs. Henry:

HAVE A “DATE NIGHT” WITH YOUR KIDS:

The power of parents always being there for their kids is so meaningful that

we often miss it. When kids understand that their parents are there for

them, they will thrive through their adolescent years. These interactions can

influence our children for years to come. A scheduled “date night” with your

child(ren) is a great place to begin to invest in the growth and health of your

child(ren). Here are some suggestions:

1. Dinner (at their choice) 4. Bowling

2. Dinner and a movie 5. Shopping trip

3. OR just a movie 6. Let them decide what is on the agenda

All of our building-wide celebrations, assemblies, dodgeball tourna-

ments, etc. are linked with positive behavior. Detentions, suspen-

sions, and Friday schools due to poor behavior, automatically exclude

students from these activities.

Thank you to the National Jr. Honor Society along with Mr. Cozart

and Mrs. Peters for our Veteran’s Day Program. Also, THANK YOU

to all veterans that came out—we had a great turn out!
