UP UP CRONULLA SHARKS UNITE THE COMMUNITY! Sharks fever gripped the Shire when the Sharks made the Grand Final and then went on to win their historic first ever NRL Premiership. It was a shame the St George Illawarra Dragons did not enjoy the best of success in 2016 however I am sure they will return stronger in 2017. “The happiness and joy felt in the community was embraced by all, even the staunchest Sharks critics jumped on the band wagon!” It was great to see local business get on board and take part in the “Sharkify your Business” competition. No doubt the best dressed house went to the Water’s family in Caringbah. All the businesses who took part decorating their shopfronts were worthy of the Grand Final tickets up for grabs, and it was difficult to choose a winner. In the end, Groundbake Cronulla enjoyed the spoils and followed the rest of the 50,000 Shire residents who embarked on Homebush to watch the boys make history. I look forward as I am sure you do to the 2017 season with anticipation and wish every success for both our Sharks and St George Illawarra Dragons. honourinG cookS’ VoLuNteeRSthe annual cook community awards held in December honoured the selfless work of those people in our local community who volunteer their time and energy helping others.Thank you to all those who contribute to making our community a better place to live. By volunteering for organisations who assist those less fortunate or in need, running our local sporting groups, surf clubs and P&C’s.

2016, ANOTHER CLASSIC YEAR!

COOK COMMUNITY AWARDS 2016

now in it’s ninth year, the imB Bank cook community classic continues to grow and reach more of the cook community. Fundraising efforts from 56 community organisations this year brings the events’ total fundraising achievements since its inception in 2008 to $839,000.

As event Patron, I thank our four Bate Bay Surf Clubs Cronulla, North Cronulla, Elouera and Wanda, the back bone of this event. Thanks also to Sutherland Shire Council for its continued support in lending the park, beach and amenities and helping to promote the event to the entire community.

I know we claim it every year but this year was truly the biggest and best yet. Hosted again by major sponsor IMB Bank, the community enjoyed the Kirrawee High Senior High School band, performances from Ettinghausen’s dance troops, Ronald McDonald Magic Show and free heart checks from the Victor Chang team.

This event is only possible thanks to the generous support of our sponsors. Returning again in 2016 were Qantas, IMB Bank, Woolooware Bay (Capital Bluestone), AHA, Sylvania BMW, Sharks, PAYCE, Kareena Private Hospital, Westfield Miranda, Sydney Airport (SACL) and ANSTO.

i am pleased to announce that this year our community organisations sold over 47,000 raffle tickets, the main fundraising arm of the event. a total of over $104,000 was raised from the raffle and carnival day.The raffle takes all the hard work out of fundraising for our great community organisations and I am grateful to all who took the opportunity in their stride selling raffle tickets at Caringbah Shopping Centre, Cronulla and Gymea Spring Fairs and the promotional site at Westfield Miranda.

I look forward to seeing you all in 2017 when we celebrate our 10th anniversary with the inclusion of the Sylvania BMW Gala Ball being held in October at Doltone House Sylvania Waters.

AUSTRALIANGOVERNMENT our FirSt 100 DayS the first 100 days of the coalition government saw the delivery of significant progress of our national economic plan for jobs and growth, including further steps towards budget sustainability. So what have we done?

Passage of the Omnibus Savings Bill and tobacco excise measures = $11 billion in budget savings measures.

Personal income tax cuts to 500,000 middle income Australians. Reformed budget measures on superannuation = fairer, more

flexible and more sustainable futures. Fairer tax on earnings for working holiday makers = Backpackers

are an important part of our $43.4 billion tourism industry and a key source of labour for our farmers and hospitality sectors.

Addressing issues on the challenge of housing affordability, examining the current state of the Australian housing market and pressures to get into the market, particularly for first home buyers.

Unemployment rate of 5.6% is at the equal lowest rates since the Government came to office. 475,000 jobs created, 1/3 created in the past 12 months.

Stricter Foreign Investment Review Board guidelines established by the Coalition government has resulted in 16 Australian residential properties held by foreign nationals in breach of the foreign investment framework, taking the total purchase price of Australian residential real estate divested to over $92 million.

Restoration of the Australian Building and Construction Commission will restore law and order on building sites and drive productivity our economy needs.

Passed bill to protect the Country Fire Authority from a hostile union takeover.

Celebrated 800 days without an illegal boat arrival = no deaths at sea.

Replaced Labor’s failed VET FEE-HELP scheme which blew out from $325m (2012) to $2.9bil (2015). The new VET Student Loans program from 1 Jan 2017 = protection for students and taxpayers, tougher barriers to entry for providers, properly considered loan caps on courses, stronger course eligibility criteria aligned to industry needs, mandatory student engagement measures, and a stronger focus on students successfully completing courses.

Increased digital literacy and improved school resourcing. Protected Medicare, improved primary health care and made

over 2,000 medicines cheaper. Announced Stage 1 of Youth Jobs PaTH (Prepare- Trial-Hire),

addressing long-term welfare dependence.
